The book builds upon seventy references, certain (SR) or conjectural (12), to the domus divina in Egypt. There are three major parts, labeled A, B, and C. Part A (pp. 4-52) discusses the testimonia according to defined topics. Part 1\ (pp. 53-121) catalogues them in chronological order into what the author calls a '"dossier."' (Numbers and references to assured testimonia are in roman, those to conjectural ones are in italic type.) Part C. (pp. 122·133) provides concordances and indices to the dossier. Little did Hadrian know in 130 A.D. that when he deified his beloved departed Antinous, in order to provide a unifying symbol of worship for his diverse empire, that he was instead creating a lasting symbol of the antique world. This thesis examines the power of nostalgia and its successful use by two formidable men from different eras in Rome: The Emperor Hadrian and the extravagantly wealthy Renaissance merchant Agostino Chigi. The illicit antiquities trade is a vast and complex network comprising a large number of participants across the globe. This paper focuses specifically on looters and illegal excavators, those who first retrieve ancient objects from the ground to be traded on the black market. My research examines the reasoning and motivation behind looting; specifically, I evaluate how nationalistic ideologies in Turkey and Iraq affect the choices and actions of illegal excavators living there. I also discuss the benefits of community archaeology, an approach that includes local people in the practice and presentation of excavation, as a strategy to minimize the …

The broad and profound influence of classical rhetoric in early America can be observed in both the academic study of that ancient discipline, and in the practical approaches to persuasion adopted by orators and writers in the colonial period, and during the early republic. Classical theoretical treatises on rhetoric enjoyed wide authority both in college curricula and in popular treatments of the art. Classical orators were imitated as models of republican virtue and oratorical style. Indeed, virtually every dimension of the political life of early Ameria bears the imprint of a classical conception of public discourse. This essay marks the …

There have been numerous councils throughout the Catholic Church?s history. From the First Council of Nicaea in 325 CE to Vatican II in 1962, only a few centuries have passed without any major church doctrinal change. It has become customary for reviews of handbooks to express misgivings toward the genre and its ever-increasing presence. But whatever one might think of companion volumes, this is a useful book. It boasts a wide range of generally high-quality essays by a parade of eminent scholars. Perhaps its most praiseworthy feature is the clarity and accessibility of many of its contributions, which makes them ideal starting points for the non-specialist. We will no doubt be assigning several of these chapters in our classes.

This is the first of two projected volumes whose purpose is to gather together, reassemble, select, and present Greek documents from the GreekCoptic archive of the notarios Senouthios, anystes of the northern skelos of the Hermopolite nome just after the Arab conquest. Most of the 32 documents in this volume are assigned by prosopographical associations, subject matter, and so on (“diversi elementi”) to ca. 643/4, based on a pivotal second indiction (see Introduzione, pp. 22-27), in other words, on the very cusp of the new Arab administration. The papyri are all Viennese. They are also all Hermopolite in provenance, but …

Landscape And Memory: Al-Nabulsi's Ta'rikh Al-Fayyum, James G. Keenan

Uthman b. Ibrahim al-Nabulsi composed his description of Egypt's Fayyum province in the 1240s A.D. His Ta'rikh al-Fayyum starts with nine summary chapters followed by a massive tenth chapter, a geographical gazetteer arranged alphabetically by villages. The text is predominately concerned with the author's present day, leaving no doubt the region's landscape had changed significantly since late antiquity. Almost all the village names were Arabic. The people had been Arabized—and Islamicized: only small Christian pockets remained. The sacred landscape had been correspondingly reconfigured. This article, originally delivered as a paper at the 117th Annual Meeting of the American Historical Association, is a development of twin papers given by Roger Bagnall and me at the xxe Congres International des Etudes Byzantines in Paris, 19-25 August 2001, as part of a "Table ronde" on villages in the Byzantine world. On that occasion, we were responsible for Egyptian villages, he for villages as evidenced (mainly) in the Greek papyri, I for the medieval period based on al-Nabulsi's description of Egypt's Fayyum Province, Ta 'rikh al-Fayyiim (c. 1245 A.D.). Aphrati And Kato Syme: Pottery, Continuity, And Cult In Late Archaic And Classical Crete, Brice L. Erickson

The analysis of ceramics from Aphrati sheds valuable new light on the history of this Cretan settlement and on its relationship with a nearby rural sanctuary at Kato Syme in the Late Archaic and Classical periods. It has long been held that Aphrati was deserted from ca. 600 to 400 B.C. A pottery deposit from the domestic quarter, however, now supports occupation of the city during this period. A ceramic classification system is presented and the morphological development and absolute chronology of several key shapes at Aphrati and Kato Syme are plotted. This essay aims to provide an overview of electronic resources for the study and teaching of classics—including Greek and Latin languages and literature, philosophy, religion, art and archaeology, and ancient history—with particular emphasis on the tools most useful for a library collection serving an undergraduate clientele. Most of this discussion is devoted to CD-ROMs and other soft ware that are available for purchase, lease, or subscription. A short section at the end of the essay summarizes resources available on the Internet. In the words of the famous Molly Malone, what any teacher wants is for the classics to be "alive alive-o." The question is: how? I hope Plato and Aeschylus, Catullus and Tacitus, will not be insulted by my posing the question. They are undoubtedly alive to us, who have devoted ourselves to reading the classics in the original. But for students new to the classics, able to approach them only in translation or wrestling with basic problems of language, the question does exist: how to make their experience of the classical texts a living one.

This article relates the history of John Dryden's translation of Vergil's Aeneid, a first folio edition of which is located at Syracuse University Special Collections. Dryden's translation, written in seventeenth century England, reflected the tense polticial environment of the times, and competed with several translations from other writers.

The two papyri edited below are housed in the Rare Books Department of the Bancroft Library on the University of California's Berkeley campus. Of Roman date, they were summarily described on page 303 of The Tebtunis Papyri Vol. II and have listings in Roger A. Pack's Greek and Latin Literary Texts from Greco-Roman Egypt. The collations which follow are based upon P. von der Muihll's edition (Basel 1946). For fragment no. 1, pertinent excerpts from the apparatus criticus of that edition are reproduced.
