The Emperor Julian (A.D. 331-363): His Life And His Neoplatonic Philosophy, Anthony W. Nattania

The Neoplatonism of the Emperor Julian (A.D. 331-363) is critically compared to the Neoplatonism of Plotinus (A.D. 205-270). This is done by analyzing their concepts of First Principles, Fate and Destiny, Existence of the Divine Being, the Human Soul, Matter, Time and Eternity, the Contemplation of "The One," and "The One" itself. Julian's psychology is analyzed in light of his Neoplatonism, Mithrasism, and tragic life history. The historical aspects of the attempted pagan reformation during the reign of Julian (A.D. 360-363) is assessed for its historical effects on the Later Roman Empire and its successive generations, while the history of …

Ships, sea battles, and naval policy are key features in Thucydides' account of the Peloponnesian War. Thucydides—who served as a general and commanded a squadron of triremes himself (4.104.4-5; 4.106.3)—clearly viewed naval power as the key to supremacy in the Aegean (1.15); Athens' rise to empire and fall from glory was inextricably bound with her fortunes at sea. Many different types of evidence provide clues to the nature of commercial exchange among the regions of the Late Bronze Age eastern Mediterranean. I approach this topic through the study of marks which were incised or painted on pottery traded between the Near East and the Aegean. Thanks to the kindness of many excavators and museum officials in Cyprus and Greece, I have been able to examine firsthand much of the marked pottery found in those regions.

Why did the ancient Greek polis originally need coins? This question, so simple to pose and so difficult to answer, leads to more specific queries such as what practical purposes coins served in the polis and what messages they communicated either explicitly through their types and legends or implicitly by their very creation as products of the political community of the polis.

This volume brings together the papers given at a conference on the Dead Sea Scrolls held under the sponsorship of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago and the New York Academy of Sciences in New York December 14–17, 1992. The conference was unusual for an American Dead Sea Scrolls conference, inasmuch as it brought together scholars from the United States and a dozen other countries. This and the fact that the papers cover an extremely broad range of Qumran topics make the volume a valuable addition for college and university libraries and for scholarly reference shelves.

When in 1786 and 1787 at Lausanne, Switzerland, Edward Gibbon was composing the sixth and final volume of 1he History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, he had at his disposal for the famous chapter on the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453 a mere handful of sources. For the core of his narrative he drew upon three Greek works: Doukas' Turko-Byzantine History; Laonikos Chalkondylas' Turkish History; the larger of the two chronicles ascribed to the man now usually referred to as George Sphrantzes (Gibbon's Phranza); and upon the letter composed in Latin and addressed to Pope …

In P. Oxy, published in 1924, Grenfell and Hunt included a series of documents that seemed to derive from a small archive preserved by the descendants of a palatine official (παλατἷνος) named Flavius Eulogius: P. Oxy. XVI 1876, 1891, 1958-62, and 1994. Grenfell and Hunt reported that all these texts (except 1961) were found together; the circumstances of the find were unfortunately not reported.
