Intentionality And Isomorphism In Aristotle, Christopher Shields

In this paper I investigate one central source of Aristotle's dissatisfaction with a comprehensive analogy between aisthêsis and noêsis. I will argue that his conception of nous as organless is neither empirically motivated nor obviously misguided. On the contrary, Aristotle's insistence that nous is separate and unmixed with the body is grounded in an approach to intentionality nascent in his treatment of noêsis. This approach to intentionality helps motivate the special status he awards nous.

This paper is a discussion of one of the more neglected passages in the central books of Aristotle's Metaphysics, Θ 9 105la4~19. In this passage Aristotle makes some assertions concerning relations that hold among potentialities and actualities, both good and bad. These assertions seem to be made as an afterthought, and their relation to the analysis of potentiality and actuality that precedes is unclear. I shall argue that in this passage Aristotle is in effect providing a metaphysical foundation for the normative component of a teleological analysis of composite substance. Change And Contrariety: Problems Plato Set For Aristotle, Charles Young, James Bogen

Plato's views on change and contrariety arise from concerns about definition and explanation in the aporetic Socratic dialogues that find more systematic analysis and resolution in the more constructive dialogues that follow. After developing these concerns, analyses, and solutions, we sketch Aristotle's quite different treatment of the same and other related issues.

This is the second major translation of Lucan to appear in the English-speaking world, following the publication in 1988 of P. F. Widdows' verse rendition by Indiana University Press. At the time this reviewer, like others, acclaimed Widdows' Lucan as excellent, but now here is Braund's version, also in verse and also of high quality. Comparison of Widdows and Braund is inevitable and indeed imperative, especially for the purchaser with an eye to economy who will have to decide whether to spend $47.50 for Widdows or the astonishing sum of almost twice that much for Braund.

Hebrew Censorship In Hanau: A Mirror Of Jewish-Christian Coexistence In Seventeenth-Century Germany, Stephen G. Burnett

Hebrew printing was an important channel of cultural and religious expression for the Jews of early modern Europe. Printed service books aided public worship, and works of popular piety, often written in Yiddish or Ladino, enabled “women and ignorant men” to learn the rudiments of halakhic practice. The printing press also made it possible for rabbis to own their own copies of talmudic tractates, responsa collections and books of sermons. Printing helped Sephardic refugees from Spain to maintain their distinctive intellectual and religious identity and some of their traditions in their lands of exile. The collection consists of two boxes containing 12 three-ring notebooks, a third box containing file folders of postmarks and envelopes from states other than West Virginia, also two scrapbooks containing other postmarked envelopes. The bulk of the collection consists of 12 three-ring notebooks containing postmarks and postcards of West Virginia towns and post offices. These notebooks are organized by West Virginia county. Many of the postmarks are on the complete, original envelope, but many have been cut off the envelopes. The postcards fall into three classes: plain blank postcards with just a postmark, holiday or greeting postcards, and the scenic …
