My Dinner With Socrates: Literary Shaping Of Philosophy In Plato And Dostoevsky, Bob Simmons

This study examines the philosophical impact of literary techniques on Plato's dialogues. Incorporating phenomenological literary theory and illustrating Plato's dramatic form and imperfect philosophical argumentation in terms of similar usages in Dostoevsky's novels, it notes an intonation of reader interaction playing a significant role in the shaping of any philosophical message that is to be taken from the dialogues. It concludes that the dialogues, like Dostoevsky's novels, play with reader's expectations of the genres of "philosophy" and "literature" and the outcomes suitable to each to frustrate their readers' search for answers in the text and thus to engage them in …

Michael Fox's excellent monograph is an exemplary redaction critical study of several witnesses to the book of Esther. The goal of the study, according to the author, is "to advance our understanding of the redactional process in general by studying the development of two particular representatives of the Esther tradition, the AT (Alpha text) and the MT (p. 6). The nature of Calvin’s tractate Reponse to questions and objections of a certain Jew (Ad quaestiones et obiecta Judaei cuiusdam responsio) has long been a matter of some dispute among Calvin scholars. The nineteenth-century editors of Calvin’s works considered the book to be “meager and weak,” no doubt assuming that Calvin was responsible for composing both the questions and answers. In the twentieth century, scholars have been more inclined to see some evidence of an actual dispute between a Jew and a Christian in the book. Does the predication of a relation between two things imply that each of the relata have attributes predicable as well? In Volume I, Ch. 52 of The Guide of the Perplexed, Maimonides discusses this, and he seems to imply that it does. I will argue, using Aristotle’s discussion of relativity as a predicate in Bk. 5, Ch. 15 of Metaphysics, that it does not, and I shall use this to discuss the consequent improved utility of an analogy Maimonides constructs between God and creatures in I.53. Favissa: Past Archaeological Excavation Reports
In December 1993, a salvage excavation was conducted in Haifa, at the site of Horvat Rosh Mayim (Romema neighborhood, map. ref. 2005/7440), under the direction of Y. Solomon, in advance of planned residential construction at the site. Two excavation areas (A, B) were opened. Area A, located at the northwestern edge of the tell and along its descending slope, revealed four stratigraphic layers.

The purpose of this article is to present three hitherto unpublished manuscripts (part of the twenty-one Deuteronomy manuscripts from Cave 4, Qumran): 4QDta, 4QDtd, and 4QDtg. These three manuscripts are placed together in this article because each has a particular feature of interest: 4QDta is the oldest of the Cave 4 Deuteronomy manuscripts; 4QDtd contains a very defective orthography; and 4QDtg presents a text identical to that of the Masoretic text. We propose to examine here two renowned champions of mysticism, Plotinus and St. John of the Cross. The former, the third-century Greek philosopher from Alexandria in northern Egypt, is the father of Neoplatonism. The latter, the sixteenth-century Castilian Carmelite, is known as reformer of his order, as theologian, as mystic, and as sublime poet of divine love. Both figures can be described, above all and specifically, as mystics: that is, as practitioners of mysticism and, at the same time, as theoreticians of mysticism. There is shared by both one dominating concern and objective: personal, experiential union with the transcendent Other, …

Incised Marks (Post-Firing) On Aegean Wares, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld

The practice of incising potmarks into LH and LM III vessels after firing is not only distinctive but also a peculiar and limited Cypriot phenomenon. A close examination of the types of vessels marked in this way and their distribution should provide some clues to patterns of trade between the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean. The work I present here is still very much in progress, and I welcome suggestions and criticisms.

Egypt of late antiquity, often referred to as Byzantine Egypt, was for years the outcast of papyrological studies. It is only recently, partly in the wake of studies on the reign of Diocletian and his fourth-century successors, that the keen interest of papyrologists and historians in Egypt of the Ptolemaic and Roman periods has carried over into the later period. Perhaps responsible for the old indifference was, as Remondon suggested a generation ago, the scholar's prejudice against those periods that are judged decadent; or, to put the matter as Johan Huizinga did in the preface to his 1919 classic, The …
