Canvas Politics: Norman Lewis And The Art Of Abstract Resistance, Mindy H.M Tan

Norman Lewis (1909-1979) is best remembered, perhaps erroneously, as the first African American Abstract Expressionist. In this dissertation, I argue that he is better suited as a Social Abstractionist and an Abstract Allusionist based on the life he lived, the work he produced, and his involvement in both black art and the Abstract Expressionist movement. ^ I begin by presenting a comprehensive overview of Lewis' biography and oeuvre. Since Aristotle, theory and literature concerning the city has centered around the participant--those citizens who operate within the city system in more or less recognizable ways (i.e. politicians, police, rioters, workers, etc.). This thesis adds to that body of work by investigating the emergence and significance not of the participant, but rather of the nonparticipant who exists within the city system but is denied interaction within that system. I term this figure the hermit.

According to both Dionysios of Halicarnassus and Livy’s Ab Urbe Condita, in 460 BCE a rag-tag group of political exiles and rebellious slaves under the leadership of one Appius Herdonius occupied the Roman Capitol; after having slaughtered those who refused to join their cause, they sent out a list of demands: political exiles should be allowed to return; slaves must be freed; debts were to be abolished; and some redistribution of wealth would occur. If their demands were not met, they would join forces with foreign groups to overthrow the Roman state. Panic ensues in the city.

Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project, 1996-2011
This paper furnishes a preliminary assessment of the field and laboratory procedures used to obtain ceramic field data by the participants of Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project in western Rough Cilicia (Gazipasha District, Antalya Province, south coastal Turkey). Between 1996 and 2004 the pedestrian team of the Rough Cilicia Survey conducted pottery collections and otherwise processed field pottery as its principal operation. Through nine consecutive field seasons the pedestrian team identified and processed an aggregate of 7313 sherds.
