‘A Mirror For Fellow-Citizens’: Cicero’S Proto-Transformational Leadership Ideal Of The Rector Rei Publicae, Evan Rw Dutmer

New England Classical Journal

In this article, I situate Cicero’s discussion of the rector rei publicae and orator perfectus in the De republica and De oratore in the context of James MacGregor Burns’s theory of the transformational leadership in his influential 1978 Leadership. I then consider how Cicero’s rector rei publicae would exhibit leadership behaviors of the Full Range Leadership Model, a popular operationalization of transformational leadership theory. Throughout, I also consider the limitations of applying transformational leadership as an interpretive frame for an ancient Roman leader such as Cicero. Minor Characters, Major Shifts: The Cases Of Pholoe, The Cretan Slave (Aen. 5.281-5), And Cretheus, The Bard (Aen. 9.774-7), Lien Van Geel

Although Pholoe, the Cretan slave (Aen. 5.281-5), and Cretheus, the bard (Aen. 9.774-7), have both received some scholarly attention, I demonstrate that there is additional significance in their fleeting appearances. Virgil’s seemingly rushed treatment of these two characters has larger implications than initially may seem the case, especially when placing them next to Virgil’s use of Homeric epic in the particularly intertext-heavy Books 5 and 9. I demonstrate how these minor characters function as Virgil’s illustrations of Aeneas’ movement away from the Homeric world, as the text progresses towards the proto-Roman project that features prominently in the Aeneid’s narrative.

Video games have grown in popularity and relevance in global significance since the mid 1980’s, proliferating into a cosmopolitan art medium occupied by European, American, and Japanese companies exchanging and navigating their cultural differences. Within this globalized art form, elements of Greco-Roman society have become prevalent. Many facets of Classics can be found in games, including historic figures, ancient texts, and allusions to Roman society. The Latin language in particular is commonly found in video game music in a variety of game genres. This is a translation of Book III of the Mathematical Collection by Pappus of Alexandria (ca. 290 - 350 CE) from the original Greek to English, following the edition of Friedrich Hultsch. While other books of the Mathematical Collection have been translated into English and short quotations from Book III have appeared in a number of places (see the Introduction), to my knowledge, no complete English translation of Book III has been published. “Neither Orthodox Nor Enlightened:” Dorothy Sayers And Classical Education In America, Jessica Richardi

In 1947, accomplished author and intellectual Dorothy Leigh Sayers shared her unorthodox views on education with an audience at Oxford University. The concerns she expressed about the failings of modern schooling and her proposed remedy would catalyze the “classical education” movement in the United States decades later, a movement characterized by adherence to the medieval trivium as both a tool of learning and a model for child development. The transmission of Sayers’s ideas to America, variations in the classical learning movement, and Sayers’ continued influence are discussed.

Malthi In Media: Peopling An Ancient Village In Virtual Space, Rebecca Worsham

New England Classical Journal

Digital applications have increased the possibilities for the visualization of archaeological material. This paper presents two reconstructions of the Bronze Age settlement Malthi, created using Minecraft and Twine, both readily accessible programs. These recreations draw on data from archaeological work at the site and are intended to depict alternative interpretations of the settlement, allowing for the uncertainty inherent in archaeology. They are likewise intended to invite interaction with the site beyond physically visiting, with the goal of increasing participation in the formation of knowledge about Malthi. The approach advocated here is applicable to other projects struggling with ambiguous data.

Horace C. 3.27 And Virgil, Aeneid 9, Michael C. J. Putnam

This essay examines the imaginative connection between c. 3.27 of Horace, one of the poet’s longest and most intense odes, and a salient episode in book 9 of Virgil’s Aeneid. In particular it searches out the multivalent appearances of the concept of pietas in the descriptions of Europe’s behavior toward her father and of Nisus and Euryalus. In their case we attend both to the association between the two innamorati themselves and to that between Euryalus and his mother. I take it for granted that the two Latin masters knew and valued the work of each other.

This is a Greek-to-English translation of one section or chapter of a larger ancient Greek work called the Mathematical Collectionby Pappus of Alexandria (ca. 290 - 350 CE). Specifically, this is “Book VIII”' of that work. To date and to the translator’s knowledge, no complete English translation of Book VIII has been published.

Pappus was very influential as a bridge between the knowledge that had been preserved from ancient mathematics and European mathematicians in the Renaissance. This specific part of Pappus' work deals with applications of geometry to questions in mechanics.
