Through the reading of histories characters are introduced that beg further study. Biographies on these individuals can provide the information often lacking in histories. Among the earliest biographies which can be studied alongside historical materials were those composed by the ancient Greeks. Despite many similarities between history and biography, early authors always considered them as distinct from one another. The differing manner in which these authors approached their subjects allows for those who read both to gain varying insights. Most recent Alexander historians - especially those writing after Stonewall - assume that the friendship of Alexander the Great and Hephaistion Amyntoros was not purely platonic.² Despite this, the names of Alexander and Hephaistion rarely find their way into modem lists of ancient lovers, nor are they much mentioned in studies of Greek homoeroticism³ - perhaps because they fail to fit the model first detailed by K.J. There is a long history of debate regarding the validity of the Rorschach Inkblot test. Much of the previous research has involved adult subjects within clinical settings. This study investigates the validity of the Rorschach with adolescents classified as being emotionally disturbed according to the educational definition. School personnel and, particularly, school psychologists have the difficult task of identifying individuals who are emotionally disturbed (ED). It appears that a valid measure of covert processes may be helpful in making these determinations. Higgins (1994) offered resilience as an alternative conceptual approach to the traditional focus on psychopathology for battered women. In this study, resilience was defined as a woman's state of psychological growth despite an abusive relationship. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between staff ratings of resilience, individual psychological resources, and situational abuse factors. A sample of 105 battered women, served by San Diego domestic violence agencies, was administered a battery of five questionnaires assessing constructive thinking, social support appraisal, optimism, psychological distress, and abuse experiences. Agency staff members recruited participants and provided clinical ratings of resilience. …

The bulk of the collection consists of 12 three-ring notebooks containing postmarks and postcards of West Virginia towns and post offices. These notebooks are organized by West Virginia county. Many of the postmarks are on the complete, original envelope, but many have been cut off the envelopes. The nature of Calvin’s tractate Reponse to questions and objections of a certain Jew (Ad quaestiones et obiecta Judaei cuiusdam responsio) has long been a matter of some dispute among Calvin scholars. The nineteenth-century editors of Calvin’s works considered the book to be “meager and weak,” no doubt assuming that Calvin was responsible for composing both the questions and answers. In the twentieth century, scholars have been more inclined to see some evidence of an actual dispute between a Jew and a Christian in the book. Previous scholarship has suggested that the frescoes of the Spanish Chapel at Santa Maria Novella in Florence were influenced by the celebration of Corpus Domini and by the philosophy of st. Thomas Aquinas. Although scholars have agreed that such influences exist, few have demonstrated,the supposed relationships among frescoed images and Aquinas' words or Corpus Domini's text. This study presents an analysis of the frescoes in the terms of Aquinas' stated ~hilosophy and the text for the mass of Corpus Domini. Seneca's Apocolocyatosis is a satire on the deceased emperor Claudius, probably written in the early months after his death in AD54. Although the authorship and title of the work have been called into question, scholars have now reached a consensus that the satire was written by Seneca and is titled "Apocolocyatosis." Its purpose, characteristic of the Menippean genre, was didactic.

Although the meaning of the Apocolocyatosis has often been discussed, few have emphasized the predominance of the legal theme, when in fact the legal motif is the key to interpreting this work. The work satirizes Claudius particularly in …

Christopher Rowland, Lecturer in Divinity, Dean and Fellow of Jesus College, University of Cambridge, has written a fascinating and provocative book. Although drawing upon years of research on Christian origins, especially on apocalypticism in Judaism and early Christianity, this book goes far beyond antiquarian exegetical interests and questions. It is a most interesting attempt to determine the origins, then chart and account for major developments in the course of one type of Christian ethic and orientation-a type of "radical Christianity" rooted in apocalypticism.

This paper argues that “the change in the power of women from the time of Vergil to the time of Augustine altered the way in which they were represented” in the seminal texts of Vergil’s Aeneid and Augustine’s Confessions. Augustine’s Confessions have long been thought to be inspired by and echoing of the Aeneid.
