Cette étude est consacrée à l'examen d'une des tragédies de Corneille, Othon; le problème particulier dont il s'agit est celui des sources historiques de la pièce. Pour savoir jusqu'à quel point Corneille se servit des oeuvres de Plutarque, de Suétone, et de Tacite, il sera utile de se rappeler que la pièce commence au moment où le héro, Othon, ayant été l'ami de Néron, éprouve le besoin d'un protecteur. Puisqu'il y a plus de sureté dans un mariage que dans une alliance, il obtient l'affection de Plautine, fille du consul Vinius et même s'en éprend.

Recently some prominent German stated that our literature of to-day is cheapened, because of the vast quantities of it now printed. Ever since the invention of the printing-press made possible a wider and less expensive circulation of reading material, there has been an ever-increasing supply of printed matter. Owing to the continually-growing circle of readers, whose demands vary, there have been found writers who would cater to the lower tastes which are lurking in the nature of every man, but which the well-balanced individual crushes with the heel of his will-power.
