The topic of this thesis was selected after reading various criticisms of Augustus as written by authors of the last decade. Though not treated as comprehensively as other phases of Horace's life, this topic nevertheless is another method of studying and criticizing Horace. The relation of Horace to Augustus is illustrated in the very writings of Horace and therefore the topic has a close connection with the writings of the poet. Because of this connection, and because of its interest, this topic was chosen.

This thesis fs devoted · entirely to a comparison of the Aeneid VI of Virgil and the Inferno of Dante. Many authors have stated points of similarity, but much research has failed to uncover any published work which makes such a comparison the whole subject of discussion. The quotations, cited in this thesis, are taken from the Aeneid, both Latin and English versions, from a translation of the Inferno, and from the works listed in the bibliography. Briefly, then, I intend to give an exposition of the seven extant plays from the point of view of the conflict between divine justice and moral freedom, with an attempt of reconstructing, in the light of criticism, the Aeschylean solution to the problems involved in the investigation. Maurice Croiset has said of Aeschylus that his dramas were revelations on the stage of the divine will; the Aeschylean meditative genius searched for causes, and thus each trilogy " divine l'expose dramatique d'une grande destinee, et, ainsi concue, elle eveilla desormais autant de peosee que d'emotion."

Catullus has been called- the most enigmatical of the great poets, and the reason is evident at once upon any attempt to arrive at definite information concerning his life. (1) According to Jerome (2), he was born in 87 B.C. and died in 57 B.C. Since Ovid says (3) "Juvenilia cinctus- tempora....docte Catulle,'' and from other sources it is known that he died young, Jerome (or rather Suetonius), is at least consistent. Not only in its beginnings, hut throughout the most flourishing period of its history, it was in intimate connection with the supernatural which entered into its very heart, and constituted one of its essential elements. Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) was a German poet whose poetry has a strong political focus. MacDonald includes several translations from Heine in Exotics (pp. 154-165), his book of translations from German and Italian poets (1876). The poems he includes resonate nicely with Phantastes.
