This dissertation aims to study about the civilizational adaptation of the Chinese immigrants from China to Malaya during the era of independence in Malaya. After migrating to Malaya between the late 19th century and early 20th century, the Chinese as the " torch-bearers" or inheritors of Chinese civilization were put in direct encounter with the indigenous people in Malaya. Thus, in orders to survive, the Chinese had to adjust themselves so as to be able to adapt to the new environment and adopt local lifestyles in solving their everyday problems of livelihood. This study analyses the Baba translated works between 1889-1950, focusing on 68 unique titles identified from six libraries: University of Malaya Library, and the libraries at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, University Science of Malaysia, National Library of Singapore, National University of Singapore and the British Library. The Baba translated works indicated three periods of publication productivity between 1889-1909 (the embryonic period), which produced 18 publications, between 1910- 1929 (the stagnant period) with IO titles and between 1930-1939 (the revival period) with 39 titles. Lao She (1899-1966) was one of the greatest realist writers in modem Chinese literature. His achievements had won him high acclaim in the literary world. Apart from his novels, poems, critiques and essays, he was also known for his many excellent dramas, where he showed his talent in character portrayal. Most notably, he succeeded in creating vivid male and female roles with unique individual traits. The focus of this research is the various female characters in Lao She's modem dramas.

The Pre-Qin Era refers to the period before the Qin Dynasty and the Era of Xia (1), Shang, Zhou, Chun Qiu and the Warring States. There was no concrete political thoughts yet during the era of Xia and Shang whereby the people still believed in Heaven and the many gods who governed their lives. Since Chun Qiu, the importance of God had been replaced gradually by the importance of the "Human's Self' after the introduction of Confucianism by Confucius and further expansion by Meng Zi and Xun Zi whereby the humanitarian aspects of the government and administration were stressed.

Huang Zunxian (1848-1905) was a famous patriot and diplomat during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). Besides that, he was also an outstanding poet who expressed his reformation ideas through poetry between the middle of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. Huang's life as a diplomat and poet was paved with numerous obstacles and he even had to counter many different challenges. He served as a diplomat for twelve years, beginning his first diplomat duty in Japan in 1877, where he served for five years. Chen Ruoxi has been renowned Chinese fiction writer since the 1970s and Yin xianzhang (Mayor Yin), a collection of six short stories, is set to be her most representative works. This thesis attempts to give an initial etymological, semantics and phonological analysis of the variant forms of the Chinese characters found in a phonology lexicon, Jiyun.
