IQ. DNA. MRI. FYI. In an ever-changing world, we find ourselves conversing with abbreviated acronyms and phrases. They drive today's economy, political agenda, and water cooler chitchat. They define our use of resources and the attention given to matters. Who we are, or think we are, are wrapped around their brevity. In our hurried attempt to sort through the complexities of life we use them to only answer the obvious-How? Unfortunately, an equally important question, Why? is often ignored. The solving of the how of things has generally been left to the scientists and the reasons as to the why …

Taking In
This book is the third edition in the Taking In: series. As was the case in Taking In: I and II, the work, dedication, detail, and graphic design is extraordinary and impressive. The work submitted by our students, and selected by our distinguished judges, reflects the eclectic vision, visual intelligence, perception, and promise of a talented student body. During this first year as a class, Taking In: worked through twice as many submissions than the previous years in half the amount of time. Taking In
Welcome to the first edition of Taking In: the best of aib photography. During this first year Taking In has gone through many twists and turns in order to publish a professional portfolio representing the quality work produced by students at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. Along with the portfolio there will be a gallery opening this Fall presenting all of the published pieces in a professional setting. Our intention is to bridge the gap between student creations and the greater art community through publication. The number of entries for our first publication were more than …
Street Photography: An Approach To Strangers: Casual, Close And Personal Encounters, Flavia M. Schuster
Street Photography: An Approach To Strangers: Casual, Close And Personal Encounters, Flavia M. Schuster
Theses : Honours
Street photographers can either camouflage or reveal their identities to the strangers they photograph. By choosing to remain anonymous, photographers often create images in which only their subjects are exposed. By unveiling their identities however, they often create images in which their interaction becomes evident in the resulting images. Casual Encounters looks at the mechanisms employed by photographers that choose to remain anonymous in contrast to the myth of the flâneur. Close Encounters looks at the mechanisms employed between strangers to deal with their daily interactions in urban environments. Personal Encounters serves to explain my own approach to the strangers …

Analytical Photography: Portraiture, From The Index To The Epidermis, Ken Gonzales-Day
Analytical Photography: Portraiture, From The Index To The Epidermis, Ken Gonzales-Day
Scripps Faculty Publications and Research
The current abundance of scholarship concerning the technological development of photography has coexisted with a proportionate absence of recent critical analysis of photographic images. Given photography's long-standing embrace of technological advances, even predating the portable camera or roll film, this article revisits some early uses of scientific photography in order to clarify the impact of digital technology on contemporary photographic practice. The author uses scientific photography and photographic archives as the groundwork for photographic experiments into what might be called analytical photography. This essay concludes with a reconsideration of the photographic portrait.
Communicating Tissue Culture As Art, Ionat Zurr
Communicating Tissue Culture As Art, Ionat Zurr
Theses : Honours
Biologically related technologies are developing rapidly. Their effects will shape the future of human society and the human environment. This paper examines, through the discipline of Photomedia, possible futures dominated by biologically related technologies. More specifically, it explores the relevant issues through the art project called 'Tissue Culture & Art' (therefore refer to as TC&A). TC&A is a research and development project which explores the use of tissue culture and tissue engineering as a medium for artistic expression. Biologically related technologies can be used as a source for questioning the traditional meta-dichotomy of nature versus culture. TC&A redefines the terrain …
