Race & Rock & Roll: A Visual Analysis Of Rolling Stone Cover Photography, Erica D. Block
Race & Rock & Roll: A Visual Analysis Of Rolling Stone Cover Photography, Erica D. Block
Honors Theses
If African Americans heavily influenced the development of rock & roll as a musical genre, why do we picture rock stars as white men with guitars? In this project I examine, with a particular focus on race, how the the visual culture surrounding rock music evolved to where it is today. To do this, I performed a close visual analysis of Rolling Stone Magazine covers from 1967-1980. In this presentation I illustrate Rolling Stone's trend of featuring 'white negroes' on their covers, which allowed the magazine to use the selling power of a white person's face while retaining the attractiveness, …

Art As Propaganda In Revolutionary America And France: A Comparative Analysis, Megan Blair
Art As Propaganda In Revolutionary America And France: A Comparative Analysis, Megan Blair
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Though wary of art as potentially corrupting, revolutionaries in both cultures employed it as propaganda, though focusing on different genres. In America, where formal art had not advanced either technically or in popularity, artistic propaganda was primarily exhibited through political cartoons, though a few examples of propagandistic portraiture do exist. Here, tradesmen, not trained artists, produced art. Contrarily, while there was an equally productive culture of political cartooning and pornography in France, …
The Evolution Of A Tourist Landscape: Wet Plate Collodion Photographs Of The Wisconsin Dells In The Twenty-First Century, Nick Olson
Lawrence University Honors Projects
A modern traveler of Wisconsin most often experiences the landscape through the windows of a car: shut in, listening to the latest hits on the radio, traveling at 70 miles per hour through rolling corn fields in the central part of the state. In this state of mind one cannot learn in-depth what potential experience the landscape has to offer. Of course the experience of an asphalt path flying by underneath is a reality in itself but other possible ways to experience the landscape exist. Along all roads, a plethora of billboards distract the traveler from the space through which …
