The goal of this work is to define the term Duchampian authenticity. I focus primarily on the artist Marcel Duchamp's works and philosophies in relation not only to traditional philosophies regarding authenticity but also in relation to his effect on authenticity's metamorphosis in popular culture and the mass market. I propose that the monumental paradigm shifts produced by Duchamp's conceptual and aesthetic experiments within the realm of visual art spread into our cultural bedrock, ultimately defining the consumer's ability to attain authenticity and identity through inauthentic and ephemeral commodities. The New York Times has reported that at least some Taliban authorities have directed that all statues in Afghanistan--including those commonly viewed as priceless exemplars of cultural (largely Buddhist) heritage and as treasures--be destroyed. The Taliban's rationale--that these statues have been used as idols and deities by non-Islamic believers and may be turned into idols in the future--is largely discussed in the context of leading to a global cultural catastrophe, as an unacceptable decision, as gratuitous vandalism, as exemplifying a rigid ignorance deserving unique contempt and disgust.

In this thesis I set out to examine the important role played by William Burges in the revival of stained glass in the mid-nineteenth century. I have examined how his unique vision and obsession with the thirteenth century developed through his extensive travelling abroad, studying European architecture. My central discussion is on Burges’ first major commission at the age of thirty-five; St. Finbarre’s Cathedral, Cork. Through the use of local newspapers, correspondence and documentation, such as Vestry Minute Books, designs and cartoons stored in the Chapter House of St. Finbarre’s, I have tried to put the building of St. Finbarre’s …

The general problem included the art and execution of bronze sculpture. It was felt that the theory of art of bronze sculpture, or any art, could be best comprehended when substantiated by practical illustration. In order to fully realize the problem, a brief history of bronze metal and bronze sculpture was presented in addition to the research in the field of various techniques of bronze casting. The practical illustration of this study was made in the form of a composition for bronze sculpture.
