Introduction

The Marsh Gallery takes pride in opening its 1987-88 season with the first Virginia exhibition of paintings and drawings by Janet Fish, acknowledged master of the contemporary still life according to art critic Gerrit Henry.

While this exhibition is intended to emphasize her current work it is also slightly retrospective, including work dating from 1975 to 1987, so that the viewer will understand the progression as well as the increasing depth of the artist's oeuvre.

Structuralism is an interdisciplinary form of modern painting that suggests the illusion of movement and growth through the conscious manipulation of flat colors and abstract geometric forms. The practice of Structuralism involves more than a grasp of the craft of painting. The artist is required to understand and practice the laws of proportion as founded by the early Egyptians and Greeks. He must have an understanding of modern color theory and he must master and practice the laws of visual perception as stated by the Gestalt psychologist, David Katz.

Rock Art In Malaysia, Paul Faulstich

Very little is known to the scientific world on the rock art of Malaysia. It might therefore be worthwhile on a site in the state of Perak, just outside of the town of Ipoh. The rock is limestone, and there is a quarry about 1/8 of a mile down the hill from the paintings. Flaking of the cliff wall and the limestone excretions have badly damaged the paintings; rain also falls directly on the paintings. As far as we know, the site has never been adequately documented.

In 1968 an exhibition entitled "Realism Now" was held at Vassar College under the direction of Linda Nochlin, a noted art historian and professor at the school. The exhibition sought to present a cross-view of recent American painting in the realistic mode. Included in the catalog were twenty-five artists including Jack Beal, Robert Bechtle, Richard Estes, Alex Katz, Alfred Leslie, Malcom Morely and Philip Pearlstein, as well as many other artists who, at the time, were relatively unknown. Many scholars have discussed the meaning of Hieronymous Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights concluding that Bosch's works were of a conscious nature relating to the real world. By contrast, this study, using the theories of Carl Jung, fragments Bosch's work and sees the milieu of his art through the eyes of the collective unconscious. Accordingly, a number of explanations of Jungian ideas are presented with the view to better understanding Bosch: Jung's theory of the archetypes, his view of Christianity, his analysis of medieval alchemy, as well as matrix archetypes and symbolic forms relating to The Garden. Ac ademicism was repressed and originality and artistic freedom were encouraged . Under Robert Henri's leadership, a new American outlook had developed. Paintings began to report individual views of life in America and describe the realities of life in the new century. This thesis is an attempt to substantiate the legitimacy of the photograph as a source and aid to painters.

Chapter 1. reviews various artists and major art movements of the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries influenced by the photograph. Since the invention of photography in 1839, artists such as Manet, Delacroix, Corot, Degas, Picasso, and Dali have used photographs as a source of inspiration and help in achieving the qualities they desired in their paintings. Most major art movements since the middle 1800's were influenced in some way by the various developments of the camera and photography.

Based on the premise that all paintings should be derived from what can be visually observed at length, this paper explores the use of photographs as a painting aid to the artist. The paper has three main sections. The first section contains historical data, the second contains advantages in using photographic assists, and the third contains personal experiments by the author.

The paper incorporates a brief survey of twenty-five major artists who have worked from photographs with the benefits they obtained from this approach. The artists surveyed were from the seventeenth through the twentieth century.

Spanning 1942-2010s, this collection consists of the professional papers and works of Georgia Southern College faculty member, Bronislaw Marion “Bruno” Bak. Materials include correspondence, teaching samples, class lecture notes, 2-D and 3-D studio technique posters, student papers, and original artworks. Of particular note are documents pertaining to Bak’s work on the window for St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota, and the 1980 biography written by his son, Clemens R. Bak.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze influence exerted on my painting by Charles Sheeler and Edward Hopper, and to pursue the development of my work.

In the first two sections of the thesis brief overviews of the work of Sheeler and Hopper are presented. Sheeler, classified as a Precisionist, was drawn to paint in a precise, sharp-edged, hard surfaced style that was itself machine-like in character. Edward Hopper, painting at the same time as Sheeler, was not classified as a Precisionist, but his art contains many of the same elements. Though he did not paint in a sharp-edged, …
