ADV 132 enables students to explore the craft and process of user experience and user interface design. They develop their skills within the context of a specific brief. The aim is to offer students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a particular problem and come up with creative solutions that will come to life on digital media platforms.

Food insecurity is a real issue unfortunately faced by many students at SJSU. The SJSU Spartan Food Pantry is a walk-in, full-service, staffed, food assistance program that provides a resource for students to receive non-perishable goods, fresh produce, and refrigerated items to eligible students. Imagine that our SJSU Spartan Food Pantry was redesigned with a more ecology-focused "systems approach" like loopstore.com.
Designed by students and for students, what do you want to see available and how can you improve the package and delivery? Pick a product that you would like to see available at the SJSU Spartan Food …

Prototyping is interwoven with nearly all product, service, and systems development efforts. A prototype is a pre-production representation of some aspect of a concept or final design. Prototyping often predetermines a large portion of resource deployment in development and influences design project success. This review surveys literature sources in engineering, management, design science, and architecture. The study is focused around design prototyping for early stage design. Insights are synthesized from critical review of the literature: key objectives of prototyping, critical review of major techniques, relationships between techniques, and a strategy matrix to connect objectives to techniques. The review is supported …

Despite documented benefits of remanufacturing, many manufacturers have yet to embrace the idea of tapping into remanufactured-goods markets. In this article, we explore this dichotomy and analyze the effect of remanufacturable product design on market segmentation and product and trade-in prices by studying a two-stage profit-maximization problem in which a price-setting manufacturer can choose whether or not to open a remanufactured-goods market for its product. Our results suggest that it is optimal for a manufacturer to design a remanufacturable product when the value-added from remanufacturing is relatively high but product durability is relatively low and innovation is nominal. In addition, …

For the past two years, faculty at San Jose State University (SJSU) have implemented a three- semester minicurriculum in Product Design and Manufacturing. The project follows the Project- Based Learning (PBL) model and is central to the Certificate Program in Product Design in the Mechanical Engineering Department, the Manufacturing Systems concentration in the Department of Aviation and Technology, and the Industrial Design Program in the School of Art and Design. Students in the three courses in the minicurriculum face design challenges while being instructed about the constraints of manufacturability. In each course, students develop three to four products. All products …

A discussion of mass production using the artist Thomas Kinkaid as an example. Kinkade, the painter of light, was an artist that was readily available to the average American art lover and potential speculative art collector. In this article, the author discusses the idea of mass-produced art, which allows the ordinary person to join the art world. Media Arts Group, Inc was able to create prints in mass production. As a result, Thomas Kinkade built an empire of light and beauty, selling his works to the masses, while mixing religion and values into his work.

Leo Manovich explores the development of the simulation project called, "The Freud-Lissitzky Navigator". Manovich first introduces Sigmund Feud during the year 1928, where Freud met with the Russian designer El Lissitzky to talk about psychoanalysis and modern architecture. During their discussion, they created the Interpretation of Dreams, Freud’s model of the concious/unconciousness. Around this time, Russian filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein wanted to create a film adaptation of Marx’s Capital, which later became his idea of “displacing” Capital in the Interpretation of Dreams. Essentially, Freud and Lissitzky was convinced to commission Eisenstein to creat a walkthrough of the model of a house. …
