Abstract This thesis examines different classes of dyes, the processes they require, their use on different textiles, and their potential effects on the environment. Additionally, experiments with natural dyes were conducted and documented. Natural berries, roots, and other dyestuffs were collected and used to dye both natural and synthetic textiles. Through research and experimentation, the different types of dyes and techniques were compared and contrasted. Each type of dye has benefits and disadvantages. Every system of dyeing produces waste along with the finished product. Current government standards regarding textile waste are discussed as well as ways to reduce costs while …

Designer Statement: Casual Elegance

As a Southern Scholar, my Senior Project deals with a subject that is not widely talked about: the elegance of everyday. I believe that there are some design elements which can be manipulated on a daily basis to achieve Casual Elegance, and thus gain physical, social, and spiritual benefits. As a designer graduating with a B.A. in Art, I want to point out specific designs that could be used to achieve the level of elegance and sophistication to which I am referring.

This documentary, filmed in 2006, examines the process of naturally dyed carpet production in a village in the Milas region of Muğla Prefecture in southwest Turkey, a region well known as a traditional Turkish carpet production area. In large numbers of villages of this region, carpet weaving is the household based work of every woman who lives there.

In this paper, I aim to add more detailed information and discussion specifically on the colors and dyes of the carpets shown in this film. First I will introduce the varieties of the natural dye materials the villagers use one by one. …

Ethically, morally, and legally people know it is wrong to produce and use counterfeit money, but why do we not think twice when it is a fashion product? The business of counterfeiting fashions is a growing problem with no end in sight. Over the past few decades, the problem has been increasing to an ultimate high. Purchasing a counterfeit product reflects on a person’s ethics and morals.
