Uncontrollable Color: Street Art Meets Street Style is the title of my senior Capstone thesis project for the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Fashion Design at Syracuse University. For this project, I designed a collection of six complete outfits that explore the theme of London street art. The thesis project will be presented in a public fashion show at Syracuse University at the end of April. In this critical statement, I will explore a brief history of fashion design, fabric dyes, and street style. Chapter two explains the origins of my inspiration for the collection. The last portion of …

After four months of extensive creative research and material sourcing, a 6-piece spring/summer ready-to-wear fashion collection came into creation to celebrate the modern woman. Bold, graphic, versatile, and feminine describe both the collection and the woman of today who balances discipline and a vivacious passion for life and humanity. All-natural textile fibers of silk, cotton, and various laser cut leathers were utilized to create the collection of day-to-evening wear constructed by Samantha Davis.

Over the past four years, my skill, technique, and style as a fashion design major at Syracuse University has grown and developed enormously. I came to college with no prior experience in sewing or garment construction but after much practice and patience, I have learned the basic skills necessary to design and to make wearable clothing. Consequently, when it came time to choose a topic for my Capstone project, I sought a creative project that would serve to showcase the expertise I have developed during my time in school.

The concept of my project is an advertising campaign featuring the …

Kaidan: Fashion And Photographs Inspired By Japanese Ghost Stories, Gabrielle Hennessey

Honors Capstone Projects - All

The objective is to visually represent Japanese ghost stories, known as kaidan, not only as a supplement to the senior fashion design thesis but also as a way to explore the more general human themes of love, loss, and betrayal.

As a fashion design major, it is required to complete in full a six-piece womenswear collection to be shown at a university-wide fashion show in April of senior year. Each individual designer decides on an appropriate theme for his or her collection; this theme is finalised during the fall of senior year, with garment construction beginning immediately afterward. Additionally, …

My goal upon completing my Honors Capstone Project was to explore the process I went through over the course of the year as I completed my senior collection in the Fashion Design program at the School of Visual and Performing Arts. My senior collection incorporated inspiration I gathered over the past four years to show how I have evolved as a designer. It was a unique experience in that it has allowed me to express my personal design aesthetic through my clothing.

My senior collection consists of six looks that were constructed and styled individually to be ready for two …

The final year in the life of a fashion design major atSyracuseUniversityis a test of everything they have learned in their time here. Each member of the program knows this challenge lies ahead, and prepares for it. But in 2007-2008, the program made a large change that threw a curveball at the senior class. The seniors were presented with three different assignments to complete.

Having been given multiple sets of criteria to stimulate our thought processes, coming up with something concrete that I was going to be able to work with seemed an easy task. Indeed the first two projects …

A Designer’S Process, Emily Derr

The objective of my thesis was to design a collection of six garments and produce one made from fabric I developed using Silk Cloqué which involves felting wool in between two layers of silk gauze. The process was initially developed by David and Dorita Reyen of Reyen Design Studio based on the work of textile designer Polly Stirling. I became interested in Silk Cloqué when the Reyens were selling their work in Slocum Hall. In fall 2004, I began working with them. My first experience working with Silk Cloqué was at one of the Reyen’s scarf workshops. My other experiences …

An Original Line Of Bridesmaids’ Dresses, Mae Polson

Honors Capstone Projects - All

A line of original bridesmaids’ dresses began as a market research project for Lara Hélène Bridal Atelier inNew York City. I was to research information on current clientele and find out what they were looking for in a bridesmaid’s dress. In doing my research I sourced books on brides and weddings, internet wedding sites, conducted surveys, and took personal interviews with the founders of Lara Hélène. The market research turned into a concept to design an original line of bridesmaids’ dresses that filled a void for a unique and elegant collection that fit into Lara Hélène’s company image.
