The world is a visual place nowadays. Media, books, movies, art, and more constantly surround us. What might we do if we consciously incorporate this visual stimulus into our educational spaces? What might we learn about ourselves and the world around us?

In this comics thesis, non-fiction comics are the focus. Through personal reflection and semi-structured interviews with three cartoonist-educators, non-fiction comics’ role in current and future pedagogical practices is explored, with the aim of thinking about how these types of works encourage exploration of oneself, others, and the world at large. This thesis examines how the reading experience of comics changes when they are presented in various artist’s book formats, particularly through the lens of time and space. This project encourages the practice of close reading, arguing that the physical form of a book is not only a container for the content, but also plays a part in its meaning-making. It shifts the narrative pace, perception of time and reader engagement. Research in this paper is heavily influenced by scholars like Johanna Drucker, Scott McCloud and Will Eisner. Love Letters to Insects is a series of artists’ books that, mimicking a scientific insect collection, asks how visual narrative can shape and reframe our relationship to our environment.

Delving into the historical construction of the nature-culture divide, my thesis considers how colonial history has shaped modes of representation in Latin America that distance, objectify, and “other” living beings. "The Adventures of Mr. C" is a children's book written by Anne-Marie Wadsworth and her grandmother, Joanne Whitcombe. It was illustrated by Anne-Marie Wadsworth, 2026 NIU graduate, as her honor's capstone project. The book was presented at NIU's 2026 Visual Communication Senior Show on April 30th. It is a christian-inspired true story about an abandoned bird (Mr .C) that becomes part of Joanne's family. Mr C. flies away from his home and is lost for many months, until Joanne experiences a timely, unexpected miracle that only God and his angels can take credit for.

This paper will examine conceptualizations of nature through environmentally themed picture books. While environmentalism is not a new topic for children’s book, recent works reveal changing attitudes toward the impact of human agency on the natural world. These texts provide a microcosmic view of the shift toward “green” kidlit and shows literary depictions of human interactions with nonhuman nature through an ecocritical lens. The current study investigates the relationship between noun classes and plant folk taxonomy in Chasu (G 22). The study focuses on two objectives: the first objective is to describe the plant folk taxonomy in Chasu and the second objective is to determine the relationship between noun classes and plant folk taxonomy in Chasu. Data were collected from rural villages in Same and Mwanga districts by using free listing, field interviews (jungle-walk-and-identify), and written texts containing Chasu plant names. Fraktur is an American folk art developed by German-speaking communities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina during the 18th and 19th centuries. This art form features ornate calligraphy combined with illustrations of flowers, birds, angels, and geometric border designs. It was often used for birth and baptismal certificates, religious texts, educational materials, and public notices. Fraktur commonly incorporates frieze pattern designs. Artistic designs based on frieze patterns appear across a wide range of cultures, and research has shown that cultural groups tend to favor certain types of frieze patterns.
