Seeing Double: Comparative Study Of Two Photograph Albums Containing Cyanotypes And Gelatin Silver Prints Of Stereoscopic Photographs, Sarah Casto
Art Conservation Master's Projects
Historical research reveals that two commercially produced photograph albums in the collection of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library contain cyanotype contact prints and gelatin silver photographic reproductions of stereo views made by Buffalo photographer Charles L. Pond. The stereo views were cut in half and pasted as individual images in each album. The manufacture and degradation mechanisms of cyanotypes are explored, with experimental aqueous treatments of cyanotypes including deionized, alkaline, and hydrogen peroxide water baths and light bleaching. Results are evaluated using spectrophotometry and x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) analysis. No correlation between color change and change in iron …

A Gebrüder Thonet bentwood rocking chair owned by a private client was treated and analyzed. A custom mold was built in order to reconstruct the chair’s missing backsplat, which was created out of bendable plywood and beech veneer. Araldite AV 1252 epoxy putty was used to fill major losses and unoriginal tack holes. In addition to inpainting fills and replacement componenets, large areas of stripped and sanded finish were compensated with dewaxed shellac and acrylic emulsion paints. The wood was determined to be beech (Fagus) via wood identification using polarized light microscopy (PLM). Cross sections of the finish were examined …

Technical Study And Treatment Of The Drawing St. Andrew Before His Cross, By Francesco Albani, María Cristina Rivera Ramos
Art Conservation Master's Projects
The 17th century Italian drawing St. Andrew Before his Cross, by Francesco Albani, was studied and treated as part of an ongoing collaboration between the Buffalo State Art Conservation Department and the Allen Memorial Art Museum in Oberlin College. Through the technical study of the piece, the materials employed by the artist were identified. It was determined that Albani used the following media to render the image: graphite, sepia ink, and white lead paint in areas of highlights. Since the drawing exhibited the phenomenon of lead white discoloration, a brief discussion of the issue and its relevance in the field …
Analysis And Conservation Of Portrait Of A Young Man, Formerly Attributed To Édouard Manet, Becca Goodman
Analysis And Conservation Of Portrait Of A Young Man, Formerly Attributed To Édouard Manet, Becca Goodman
Art Conservation Master's Projects
A painting that was formerly attributed to Édouard Manet, was researched, examined, and technically analyzed. Imaging techniques revealed a hidden inscription in the background that places the painting in Paris in the late 19th century. Scanning Macro-X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (MA-XRF), Optical Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy SEM-EDS), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed that no anachronistic pigments, media, or materials were used in the work. The painting was separated from its warped backing board and mounted to a new secondary support. Overpaint was removed to reveal the original inscription.
The Lord Books At Buffalo State: Survey And Treatment Of A Study Collection, Abigail Merritt
The Lord Books At Buffalo State: Survey And Treatment Of A Study Collection, Abigail Merritt
Art Conservation Master's Projects
Twenty-three Lord collection books from the Buffalo History Museum were surveyed for comprehensive conservation records. Documentation, housing, and conservation to prepare the books for use as a reference collection were carried out. These needs were addressed through a survey, including photographic documentation and database creation; and a phased conservation plan, including improved storage in custom enclosures and limited treatment. The potential of the collection as a resource for study is demonstrated through graphs and a table of feature comparisons.

The present volume, a 17th century book printed in Italy on handmade paper and laced into a paper case, has been previously water damaged and there is tide line staining on a number …
Retreating From Wax: Investigation And Re-‐Treatment Of A Painting Exhibiting Strange Surface Effects, Anne D. Schaffer
Retreating From Wax: Investigation And Re-‐Treatment Of A Painting Exhibiting Strange Surface Effects, Anne D. Schaffer
Art Conservation Master's Projects
Surface hazing occurring on a recently treated painting called into question the methods used in its treatment, and offered a rare opportunity for research, analysis, and reflection on the field of paintings conservation. Portrait of Millard Fillmore was treated in 1996 and given a rather interventive and innovative treatment that utilized a great deal of wax to re-.‐line the canvas and to fill losses. The canvas was lined to fiberglass and backed with Mylar, and a complex varnish schema was used: three varnishes were applied, all of which were soluble in low polar solvents. Suspecting that any …
