IASDR Conference Series
Design thinking is a human-centered innovative strategy often used by teams to come up with novel, inventive solutions to problems. The collaborations often yield more innovative results than do individual efforts. In recent years, because of the impact of the pandemic, collaborative design thinking has not been limited to face-to-face discussions; rather, more workshops have been introducing online collaboration software as a discussion tool. The purpose of this study was to capture the key aspects of process gain and loss that affected team effectiveness in short-term design workshops, provide feedback and further optimize workshops. To address the research goal, study …

Learn X Design Conference Series
From the COVID-19 pandemic upending higher education, design education has been stretched, challenged, and reckoned with over the course of the past year. Against this backdrop, many have shifted their focus from in-person to online learning modalities. While understanding that is an accessible solution, we also recognize that is at a detriment to col-laboration and creation in traditional design education practices. Seeking to actively foster diverse ways of approaching interior design pedagogy, a collaborative team of faculty cre-ated a platform for multidisciplinary making to engage students in a semester-long work-shop series, entitled, Blender. Blender intends on creating inclusive learning landscapes …

Build Your Own Body Mod: Empowerment Through Prototyping And Design, Anaiss Arreola, Katherine R. Ganim
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
When you don’t have a hand, what could you have instead? This article introduces the impact of inviting youth with disabilities to learn tools and technology to design their own solutions and advocate for their own future. This approach to programming is rooted in a mindset of designing WITH, not FOR. Not only are design outcomes improved when users are incorporated into the process, but this approach has been shown to improve confidence in creating one’s own solutions. These programs include hands-on “design-your-own-body-mod” workshops, as well as a budding inclusive design consultancy led by youth with disabilities. Through this programming, …

2017 Storytellers’ Institute
Each year the MDOCS Storytellers’ Institute celebrates documentary work and practice around a centralized theme. For the inaugural Institute in 2015 we explored whose stories get told, delving into family and storytelling. In 2016, the Institute considered what constitutes documentary, considering the lines between fact and fiction. For the third Institute in June 2017, MDOCS invited documentary creators whose work engages with the where of documentary, the operation of SPACE & PLACE.
Spaces matter: streets, kitchens, forests, schools, offices, hospitals, mountaintops, ocean floors. Anywhere that people live, work, play, worship, create, and cross provides the context of …

Fear And Nostalgia In Immigration, Daniel A. Matthews
Theses and Dissertations
Fear and Nostalgia in Immigration is a project that uses re-occuring memory and experiential memory to help us understand our common histories. The projects asks individuals to first share a re-occuring memory by writing it on a chalkboard. The next step is to then write an experiential memory about immigration, this can be a story you might have heard or it could be something from your own family history. These two tasks are done on a communal table where several individuals are engage in the same task at the same time. This aim of this exercise is to have something …

Rethinking Pedagogy For Iterative Design Process Learning And Teaching, Jennifer Loy, Samuel Canning
Rethinking Pedagogy For Iterative Design Process Learning And Teaching, Jennifer Loy, Samuel Canning
Learn X Design Conference Series
Product Design as an academic discipline is a relative newcomer to higher education. As a result it has had to adapt to the teaching practices and organisation already in place in Universities. However, with the viability of the current business model of higher education under threat from economic pressures, the dominance of established practice could conceivably be challenged, suggesting the time is right for a review of Product Design education as it operates within academia. Product Design educators need to focus on developing an innovative, practical approach to the organisation of learning based on sound design practice-based principles and provide …

Learn X Design Conference Series
A designer-focused approach is often taken when observing co-design processes and the designers’ learning is reflected rather than the users. This study takes an all-inclusive angle in observing an inclusive design workshop which involved five professional designers, five users from a diverse backgrounds, and five design researchers. Questionnaires were distributed to the designer and user participants, before and immediately after the workshop, to gather data about their opinions on broader issues relating to inclusive design. The design researchers carried out observations during the workshop, gathering detailed notes and audio-visual data. Follow-up interviews were conducted to identify any issues relating to …
