Umbrella And Jellyfish, Yanran Bi
Umbrella And Jellyfish, Yanran Bi
Masters Theses
Rainy season arrives as soon as the summer begins in Shanghai. For some reason, I rarely remember to bring an umbrella with me. I have a lot of umbrellas, most of them are transparent ones bought at subway stations. When it suddenly starts pouring rain, umbrella vendors in Shanghai gather at each crowded exit of the subway sta- tions to sell umbrellas to people like me. The cheapest umbrellas they have are always the transparent ones. The whole city is turned upside down by the rain with its reflections on every street. Then a transparent umbrella opens up, then another, …
The Semantic Field Of “Love” In Javanese Language, Larasati Mauli Amane Hendryanto, Widhyasmaramurti Widhyasmaramurti
The Semantic Field Of “Love” In Javanese Language, Larasati Mauli Amane Hendryanto, Widhyasmaramurti Widhyasmaramurti
International Review of Humanities Studies
This research delves into the extensive lexicon of the Javanese language, specifically focusing on expressions related to feelings of love. The presence of multiple Javanese lexicons denoting love poses a significant challenge, prompting the central question: What are the semantic nuances that distinguish each lexicon, given the absence of absolute synonyms? The research aims to elucidate the semantic fields that differentiate each love-related lexicon in Javanese. Data for this research is drawn from four distinct Javanese dictionaries, spanning various publication periods. Additionally, the study incorporates diverse data sources, including a book titled "Antologi Cerita Pendek Bahasa Jawa di Yogyakarta …
Points Of Contact, Giancarlo Venturini
Points Of Contact, Giancarlo Venturini
Theses and Dissertations
The work in Points of Contact arises from engaging love as it relates to distance, desire, and longing. This paper will analyze my painting practice and its evolution from the explicit to implicit. Specifically I am going to talk about my utilization of landscape painting to consider another way of expressing sexuality and queerness. I will explain how objects and landscapes are conduits for feelings that can intrinsically hold allegorical representations. This show is about searching through vast spaces to find points of connection in the natural world. I will talk about portals and the varied degrees of accessible windows …
Blueprints, Lauryn E. Welch
Blueprints, Lauryn E. Welch
Theses and Dissertations
“Blueprints” is an open letter on chronic illness and its shaping of the artist’s partnership and painting practice. Through the framework of a house—foyer, kitchen, library, bedroom, garden—put in relation to the body, this paper examines the vibrant matter inside, as an alliance of parts including people, objects, and spaces.
Love And Freedom, Allen Michael Hopkins
Love And Freedom, Allen Michael Hopkins
Theses and Dissertations
I have created my thesis body of work by researching children's book illustrations and distorted portraits by various artists. My illustrations are based on my book, The Adventures of Henry and Isabella: Battle of Proerable, inspired by the Disney films The Chronicles of Narnia, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, How to Build a Better Boy, and Kim Possible series. My distorted portraits of friends and family represent their personality traits. Even though the illustrations and portraits follow the style of European artists Franz Marc, Wassily Kandinsky, and Paul Klee, they are distinguished from the artists’ styles. The …

Senior Project submitted to The Division of Arts of Bard College.
In September of 2021, I turned 21 years old. During that time I also discovered a 8mm video tape in my childhood home. Unbeknownst to me, this tape, which hadn’t seen the light of day since its conception, would end up consuming my life.
The tape was a home movie filmed by my mother and her partner at the time during an outing to Vietnam in 2005. The footage consisted mostly of landscapes and claustrophobic close-ups of distant relatives. Rarely would I enter the frame. But I wasn't interested …

Theses and Dissertations
T.R.A.S.H. allies the moral confusion underlying (student) debt and the unregulated art market in order to establish a rigorous framework for “RED HOT SHAME”—an open edition contractual performance. In treating an art collector as a collections agency, the Debt Object becomes an Art Object.

To Remember You By, Tesla Kawakami
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
This project is an illustrated zine memoir of queer love, dating, and growing up, framed by what was left behind. I explored my dating history through illustration, writing and material objects. Each section was about a different person, and was structured through a cut paper illustration of the item that they left behind at my house. I used a variety of different illustration techniques including cut paper, collage, painting, and found materials.

Empathy, Animals, And Deadly Vices, Kathie Jenni
Empathy, Animals, And Deadly Vices, Kathie Jenni
Animal Studies Journal
In Deadly Vices, Gabriele Taylor provides a secular analysis of vices which in Christian theology were thought to bring death to the soul: sloth, envy, avarice, pride, anger, lust, and gluttony. She argues that these vices are appropriately singled out and grouped together in that ‘they are destructive of the self and prevent its flourishing’. Using a related approach, I offer a secular analysis of gluttony and cowardice, examining their roles in common failures to empathise with animals. I argue that these vices constitute serious moral failings, for they enable continuing complicity in animal abuse and undermine integrity. While Taylor …

Begin With Letting Go: A Found Poem In Honour Of Carl Leggo, Contemplative Arts Collective
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
As a group of nineteen, we are pleased to offer a found poem that we co-created with lines from our contributions to a two-part special issue of Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal (2018, 2019). We wove our words together with those of our dear friend, colleague, and mentor, Carl Leggo, who was integral to the emergence and energy of the special issue and to the work of this group. Further, we performed the found poem at an event in honour of Carl’s life and work (Canadian Association for Curriculum Studies Preconference Event—The Many Faces of Love: Celebrating the Lifework of …

Hey Boo, I’Ve Been Lonely. What’S Good With You?, Khari Johnson-Ricks
Theses and Dissertations
I explore the interlacing macro and micro implications of capitalism on interpersonal relationships. In an attempt to reconcile that problem I use storytelling, painting, and performance to imagine radical futures when love safety and abundance are easier to access.

Family is more than a wife, a husband, and their children. Family is support and reliance. It is unconditional love. It's a concept many of us understand and feel a deep connection. This contemplative playscape is dedicated to Sarah West and her family, a former faculty member of the College of Design. This design is unified from three individual components, representative of each family member. The center piece acts as Sarah and her memory as a mother, wife, and artist. Alone, this piece could not stand. Two additional pieces brace and interlock into this center form, allowing the design to …

Hero Baby, Elizabeth J. Harney
Theses and Dissertations
With fiction and theory, the following pages give context to my most recent body of work called Hero Baby. The work in Hero Baby embodies an aesthetic of cuteness, as highlights the relationship between: aggression and protection, power and submission, war and commodity, nationalism and desire for love.

Honors Papers
How do you write about a feeling you do not understand? How do you organize what is purposefully messy? How can you name a ghost of something that you push into the world with your hands? In this thesis, I will explain my practice, form, and material as a way to illuminate my art, along with various readings and philosophies that I use to guide the work.

Artist Statement:
In this project I am using figurative painting to explore the meaning of relationships/emotion and my connection to the people I am painting. I question what this means and how each individual’s identity ties to mine and why it may or may not matter. “Thanks to You, I’m Alive,” the title of this project, encompasses the message I am sending not only to the individuals I painted but also to the viewer because there is a certain exclusivity in who I decided to paint.
I want the connection I have with these people to not only …

I Love You Three-Fifths, Brittany B. Tucker
I Love You Three-Fifths, Brittany B. Tucker
Senior Projects Spring 2018
Disparities in representation are gaps that can be filled. They’re also abundances that can be destroyed or dispersed. Misrepresentation is another useful tactic. In “I Love You Three-Fifths” I’m choosing to misrepresent the white body by caricaturing and simplifying it in order to address the relationship between American blackness and whiteness through portraiture. This “dis-representation” allows me to paint intimacy and interaction without committing to the Western ritual of rendering white bodies. Instantly, by rendering myself realistically, I become the primary subject. I am real while the white man is the joke of the painting. It’s a reversal of the …

Love Sex God, Magdiel G. Alfonso
Theses and Dissertations
As a result of the absence of a father-figure and the repulsion of machismo, a love for that masculinity and a void within grew from the missing father-son/male-male interaction; this is the drive to codify my work with homoerotic imagery bathed with guilty religiosity through a torturous sadomasochist context to display a life-mirrored desire to punish and love the male simultaneously while feeling guilty doing it. The work is inspired by homoerotic and religious art history and at times the blending of the two.
The purpose of this work is not only to show the love for the celebration of …
