Essential Caretaking For Artists With Disabilities: Exploring The Overlooked Histories Of Hazel Knapp And Grandma Moses, Bryan P. Martin
Essential Caretaking For Artists With Disabilities: Exploring The Overlooked Histories Of Hazel Knapp And Grandma Moses, Bryan P. Martin
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis explores the intersection of disability studies and art history, addressing the underrepresentation of disability in scholarship, especially concerning medical sociology and caretaking. Focusing on two early-twentieth-century self-taught American artists, Hazel Knapp (1908–95), who fell into obscurity, and Anna Mary Robertson Moses (1860–1961), best known as Grandma Moses, this is a comparative analysis of how disability influenced their artistic practices and shaped their divergent career outcomes. Knapp was born with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a neurodegenerative disorder, and fell into obscurity due to a lack of support for her condition, but experienced a promising start to her career that included patronage …
Communicating The “Already, Not Yet” Through The Visual Arts, Hadley Jacobs
Communicating The “Already, Not Yet” Through The Visual Arts, Hadley Jacobs
Senior Honors Theses
The “already, not yet” is a theological concept that addresses the tension of Christian living. Although believers are free from sin’s power, they are not free from its effects. This thesis examines the “already, not yet” through a series: one graphite drawing, one colored pencil drawing, and one oil painting. The graphite drawing depicts a ruined building, the colored pencil drawing depicts a building being rebuilt, and the oil painting depicts a restored building. They represent the fallen state of man, the state of believers on earth, and the state of believers after being restored, respectively. Together, these pieces create …
All Set For Next Week: Reorienting Domesticity, Gendered Labor, And Collective Mourning, Kayla Lockwood
All Set For Next Week: Reorienting Domesticity, Gendered Labor, And Collective Mourning, Kayla Lockwood
Graduate & Professional Student Association Research Forum
All Set for Next Week (2024) was a coffin‐shaped coffee table that formed the focal point of my Honey, I’m Home! Midway Exhibition—a core requirement for my advancement to candidacy, which I successfully completed. Revisiting the nostalgic domestic imagery of mid‐twentieth‐century sitcoms like The Honeymooners and I Love Lucy, this piece examined the precarious nature of home, shifts in gender roles, and the collective reshaping of mourning rituals during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Made from red oak, a wood historically linked to coffin‐making, the table evoked the memory of my grandfather’s passing while probing deeper questions surrounding inherited skill sets and …

Braiding Culture Through Ceramics & Mixed Media Sculpture, Joy M. Okokon
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Stories are embedded in each strand of Nigerian hair, serving as a bridge across generations and embodying the legacy of cultural expression. Hair-making, a skill passed down through generations in my family, began as a personal practice and has evolved into a powerful means of exploring and showcasing the cultural significance of hair braiding through creative works. The sculptures included in this thesis, Braiding Culture Through Ceramics & Mixed Media Sculpture, feature hair sculpture, afro combs, stools, adire batik made from materials such as clay, wood, glaze and cotton fabric. These materials are carefully selected for their cultural relevance and …
I Prophesy Disaster: Adapting Musical Storytelling To Fashion, Adam Snedden
I Prophesy Disaster: Adapting Musical Storytelling To Fashion, Adam Snedden
Honors College Theses
Fashion is an artistic medium, where garments communicate ideas to any potential viewers by using visual imagery and relying on our cultural expectations. At the level of haute couture design, these visuals grow more elaborate and dramatic. With this project, I wanted to accomplish the goal of adapting a song, the gothic-inspired progressive rock epic A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers, into a single couture-style look. Getting as many details of the song as possible to be apparent in an overcoat, shirt, and pants was a challenging task that required extensive use of embroidery and attention to detail. Additionally, this look …
From Ink To Code, From Binary To Boundless Reality—Until All Returns To Emptiness, Weitong Sun
From Ink To Code, From Binary To Boundless Reality—Until All Returns To Emptiness, Weitong Sun
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the entangled relationship between language, memory, and technology through the lens of immigrant experience. Moving from programming to visual storytelling, I investigate how dyslexia, bilingualism, and cultural displacement have shaped my ways of reading, writing, and coding.
Beginning with personal reflections on switching from computer science to art, I trace how code offered a form of clarity and expression where written language had once failed me. Yet as I ventured into real-time simulation and XR storytelling, I encountered new forms of mistranslation—where narratives dissolved, mutated, or resisted coherence altogether.
Through a series of experiments in code-driven art, …
The Cut Worm Forgives The Plow, August Neuscheler
The Cut Worm Forgives The Plow, August Neuscheler
Theses and Dissertations
The explorations in this thesis writing are centered on William Blake’s proverb “The cut worm forgives the plow.” It has been reinterpreted as an allegory of history and energy. A theory of their relation is proposed based on forgiveness, a theory that accepts the palimpsest of orders as evidence for the abundance of the present moment. The writing focuses on questions of proportionality, scale, archaeological screening methods, planar cutting, and a critique of entropy as grounds for this theory. Some of its subjects include the Statue of Liberty, Kate Raworth’s donut economic model, sashimi, triangulation, Joseph Beuys’ “7,000 Eichen,” semiconductors, …
Vessels Of Spirituality: Merging Faith And Form, Maryam Al-Tajer
Vessels Of Spirituality: Merging Faith And Form, Maryam Al-Tajer
Theses and Dissertations
According to traditional Islamic teachings, natural materials like frankincense, black sesame seeds, and sidr (jujube) leaves are valuable both physically and spiritually. Historically, they have been used for healing and purification. Nowadays, influenced by contemporary science, people tend to overlook their metaphysical value, focusing on their medicinal uses. Similarly, Muslims assign spiritual qualities to the Muqatta’at, the disconnected letters that preface several surahs of the Holy Quran, believing them to contain sacred power. In both of these cases, the material leads to the spiritual.
Through material experimentation, informed by religious texts, my thesis combines revered materials with sacred letter forms …
Infinite Finite: A View On Human Progression Through Emergent Generative Systems, Fatima Abbas
Infinite Finite: A View On Human Progression Through Emergent Generative Systems, Fatima Abbas
Theses and Dissertations
Contemporary crises reveal an imbalance in human progression, prioritizing material advancement while neglecting ethical, compassionate, and spiritual dimensions. This thesis examines natural progression through the lens of emergence, where simple interactions produce complex outcomes. Analyzing natural patterns across different scales, from cosmic formations to neural interactions, underscores emergence's universal nature.
Within this context, Infinite Finite introduces a generative digital tool simulating emergence through iterative cycles of construction and deconstruction. Depicting a century of human progression informed by historical behaviors via simulated cellular interactions, the tool visually differentiates ethical from unethical progression. This is represented through ten data visualization tiles composed …
¡Bip Bip!, Diego Pablo Málaga Beckhart
¡Bip Bip!, Diego Pablo Málaga Beckhart
Theses and Dissertations
¡Bip Bip! is a body of work that investigates the car as it exists in the American imagination, a metaphorical and physical object where culture, identity, and power intertwine. This work uses painting, printmaking, collage, video, and installation to explore the car as a space of expression, interiority, and understanding the world through a marginalized lens.
Central to my practice is my personal vehicle, Guadalupe, which functions as both muse and metaphor, the main driver of the framework within ¡Bip Bip! My practice examines the different but congruent contexts intersections of this iconic American symbol, the car. In my paintings, …
Beneath The Roots: Becoming Native Through Mangrove Teachings And Wisdom, Shima Aeinehdar
Beneath The Roots: Becoming Native Through Mangrove Teachings And Wisdom, Shima Aeinehdar
Theses and Dissertations
Beneath the Roots uses the wisdom of mangroves to investigate the naturalization of humans through science, spirituality, and storytelling. The seeds of Avicennia marina, the gray mangrove, drifted to Qatar at some point in history and took root, like so many other people here. The mangrove survives in a harsh saline environment through a unique salt excretion process. As a Qatar-born expat, I relate to this struggle to survive and nativize in a land that is both my own and foreign to me, in a cyclical conversation. I explore this nativization process through a ritual of salt extraction, creating botanical …
Crafting Futures: Balancing Tradition And Technology In Craft Practices, Saga Elkabbash
Crafting Futures: Balancing Tradition And Technology In Craft Practices, Saga Elkabbash
Theses and Dissertations
Under pressure from mass production and the decline of artisan skills, craft traditions risk becoming relics of the past. Crafting Futures challenges this by treating machines as tools of creative expression, working alongside and in harmony with traditional hand techniques. By pairing an experienced potter with a creatively deployed 3D-printer to develop a series of artifacts, this research fosters a dynamic conversation between partners. Digital fabrication can engage with, rather than replace, traditional making practices, emphasizing the role of the maker’s imagination as the site of knowledge, intuition, and improvisation. The resulting series of hybrid clay vessels reinforce not only …
Inherited Wounds: Navigating Intergenerational Trauma Through Cooperative Play, Ayza Sheikh
Inherited Wounds: Navigating Intergenerational Trauma Through Cooperative Play, Ayza Sheikh
Theses and Dissertations
'Strength' for Pakistani women is often defined as compromise, sacrifice, and silence. This definition has shaped intergenerational struggles in which women's self-narratives are constructed through suppression. Inherited Wounds seeks to address the trauma of suppression by creating a safe space for expression that fosters reflective and emotion-driven dialogue between Pakistani mothers and daughters.
Using interactive storytelling and embodied play, I developed a choice-based, narrative-driven video game and accompanying gesture-based controller. The game unfolds across childhood, marriage, and motherhood, mirroring the cycle of intergenerational struggle. Navigating choices in the game requires physical, intimate cooperation. The game uses the protagonist’s life as …
Food Waste Renaissance: From The Table, For The Table, Yasamin Shaikhi
Food Waste Renaissance: From The Table, For The Table, Yasamin Shaikhi
Theses and Dissertations
What if waste could be seen as a valuable resource rather than a burden? Food Waste Renaissance (FWR) explores innovative ways to transform excess food and byproducts into sustainable design materials. In Qatar, where food waste constitutes approximately 60% of urban waste, FWR promotes a shift in perception rather than attempting to resolve large-scale waste management issues. By fostering a culture where surplus becomes a resource, it inspires individuals, designers, and communities to embrace and contribute to a circular economy. FWR examines rice and date byproducts as biodegradable raw materials for lamps, bringing material from the table back to the …

Reply Stop To Stop, Molly A. M. Garrett
Reply Stop To Stop, Molly A. M. Garrett
Theses and Dissertations
Over the course of 8 years working in progressive political strategy, 2015–2023, I became increasingly critical of the systems, formulas and tools we were using to communicate with voters. Reply STOP to Stop is documentation of my time at graduate school, of wrestling with ideas of political design, language, communication and distribution. I analyzed my past work — all the texts, emails, social media posts, print ads, web banners, videos and other miscellaneous scripted content — and wondered if we would all be better off without it. Would elections be fairer, would there be less fake news, more community building? …
Wander, Wonder: Beyond The Window, Se Young Lee
Wander, Wonder: Beyond The Window, Se Young Lee
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores how small, site-specific interventions can reframe everyday spaces through acts of observation, walking, and placement. In response to the increasing detachment from physical environments caused by digitized, image-saturated culture, this research asks how gentle gestures might restore presence and embodied perception in overlooked urban sites.
Drawing on the notion of the flâneur and grounded in theories by Peter Zumthor, Rebecca Solnit, and others, walking is employed as a form of spatial inquiry—a way of thinking through movement, of seeing through slowness. Along a recurring route between home and studio, three underappreciated sites were identified and engaged through …

Articles
Background
Fatigue is a common problem in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS).
Objective
The objective was to evaluate the effects on fatigue of having 4 weeks of
access to audio recordings of therapeutic hypnosis (HYP) and mindfulness meditation
(MM) practices.
Methods
A total of 333 individuals with MS and fatigue were randomly assigned to
one of the three treatment conditions for 28 weeks: (1) access to therapeutic HYP audio
recordings, (2) access to MM audio recordings, or (3) no access to recordings
(treatment as usual or TAU). Fatigue impact (primary outcome) and other outcomes
were assessed at 4, 16, and …
Marcescence, Ben Liebl
Marcescence, Ben Liebl
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Marcescence is the withering yet attachment of a leaf to its stem. This withering but futile persistence conceptually intrigues me, as well as the inclusion of nuance into dichotomies. In this installation, many of the forms are derived from the burls and galls of trees, phenomena resulted from damage but a testament of healing--scar tissue--to anthropomorphize. Here, I use marcescence as an extended metaphor, to relate with that very persistence. This body of work sheds off personal items, writings, former works of art, and memories, which, have undergone transformation to be gawked at before their next transition.
The next part …
Wavering Masculinities, Riley Rist
Wavering Masculinities, Riley Rist
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Wavering Masculinities is a compilation of anthropological research, exploration of self-identity/belonging, and deep dive into the cultural expectations of heterosexuality (as it relates to gender expression). The works convey a physical connection to my anthropological research to produce imagery about masculine behaviors and appearances, and the deviations of those appearances and behaviors. This exhibition looks at the line between masculine and feminine expression from the male-identifying perspective to inquire about the amount of feminine traits that can be possessed until sexuality is questioned/assumed (and why does being feminine have to be a bad thing?! )
Food Porn, Amanda Jordan
Food Porn, Amanda Jordan
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Food Porn explores the seductive allure of consumer food culture, tapping into themes of desire, indulgence, and excess. Inspired by the bold colors and compositions of pop art, my work exaggerates the appeal of everyday treats, mirroring the glossy, hyper-stylized nature of advertising. Through large-scale formats, repetition, and vibrant hues, I examine how food imagery fuels obsession, status, and identity. The way we consume food visually is just as powerful as the act of eating itself, blurring the line between sustenance and spectacle. By magnifying these visual temptations, my paintings invite viewers to reflect on their own cravings, the power …
There's Still Time To, Lily Kip
There's Still Time To, Lily Kip
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
There's Still Time To is a body of work composed of 51 photo-derived oil paintings. Each piece illustrates a relational situation which resists straightforward interpretation and generates infinite narrative possibilities. My source images come from my adolescent engagements with smartphone photography and social media, but the painted results are not focused on "photography" as a subject. Instead, I paint the photo to re-tread old memories and old relationships. The ambiguity of each figurative situation reflects the lived experience of relating to others and also serves as an invitation to the viewer who must base any assumptions about the painting on …

Tenaciously Curious, Joe Mark Taylor
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In this thesis paper, I will outline the journey I’ve taken throughout my graduate studies at the University of Montana and how it has culminated in my thesis exhibition, Tenaciously Curious. I’ll begin with an Introduction that speaks to the importance of finding ways to connect to nature, and the benefits we gain by recognizing our bodies as extensions of the organic world.
In the following section, Influences, Theory and Lineage, I’ll explore the themes that drive my research, highlight artists who have influenced my work, and discuss why this inquiry feels vital within our contemporary moment.
In the section …
