Design-Driven Entrepreneurship: Transforming Design Capabilities Into Organizational Strategy, Yichen Meng
Design-Driven Entrepreneurship: Transforming Design Capabilities Into Organizational Strategy, Yichen Meng
IASDR Conference Series
Traditionally, technical expertise has been regarded as the cornerstone of entrepreneurial success. However, in today’s dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystem, design is increasingly recognized as a catalytic force that reshapes value creation through the inherent logic of product, service, and organizational development. Based on multi-case workshops and cognitive-mapping analyses, this study identifies the key nodes of design intervention and the pathways of knowledge flow, leading to the proposal of the Dual-Cycle System Model of Design-Driven Entrepreneurship. The findings reveal that design is not a linear development process but functions through the coupling of the action and cognition cycles, where continuous feedback transforms …

Let's Explore Food: Designing Interactions For People With Dementia To Express Food Choices, Rising Lai, Niels Hendriks, Andrea Wilkinson, Sara Laureen Bartels
IASDR Conference Series
This study demonstrates how participatory socio-material design can enable people with dementia (PwD) to articulate food preferences. Grounded in Furst et al.’s (1996) food choice process model, an action research methodology involving thirteen sessions with eight residents in a Flemish dementia care home developed and tested engaging materials across two phases: group interactions to assess material appropriateness and individual sessions to refine facilitation strategies across varying verbal communication capacities. Interactions and materials were evaluated on two interdependent dimensions: socio-material function (how artefacts co-constitute meaning) and validity and feasibility (intention-outcome alignment and interpret ability). Findings yield three design principles: contextual conciseness, …

Triadic Co-Creation Model: Redefining Child Participation In Urban Planning In The Majority World, Himani Kanojia, Saurabh Tewari
IASDR Conference Series
In the Majority World, traditional approaches to urban planning are being challenged by emerging policy initiatives that recognise children as legitimate participants equal to adults in shaping their urban environments. However, the participation often remains tokenistic, due to a slow-evolving social and political mindset. Another wicked problem in the participatory planning process with children in the Majority World is that their primary focus is on what they produce and not on how they wish to produce. This paper shifts the lens. Drawing on the “Designing Delhi City Together” workshop conducted with 120 children from a publicly funded Central School in …

Design Next: An Emergent Paradigm Shift, Shyhnan Liou, Ingri P. Hernandez Sibo, Chi-Yi Chang
IASDR Conference Series
This paper employs Thomas Kuhn’s paradigm shift framework to analyze the evolution of design, arguing that the field is undergoing a fundamental transformation from Human-Centered Design (HCD) to Assemblage-Centered Design. Historically, design progressed from a pre-paradigm phase (artifact-centered, industrial-era design) to a normal science phase (HCD, emphasizing user needs and design thinking). However, systemic crises such as climate change, social inequality, and AI integration, revealed anomalies in HCD’s user-centric focus, triggering a revolutionary phase. Assemblage-Centered Design redefines design’s ontology (encompassing ecosystems, AI, and socio- technical systems), epistemology (relational/systemic thinking), methodology (transition/speculative design), and teleology (long-term planetary well-being over commercial usability). …
