Due to its interdisciplinary nature, research in design, more so than other disciplines, has to develop self-awareness to adapt to the inherent complexity of the contemporary world. This requires the use of big data as comprehensive self-descriptors, along with tools borrowed from the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate knowledge that researchers in this field can integrate with their own expertise to guide their research activities. We consider a large-scale set of about 170000 design-related scientific publications and leverage natural language processing, machine learning, and data visualization to explore and capture the evolution of the design community. We identify …

DRS Biennial Conference Series
Queering imagines the end of rigid binaries, norms, traditions, assumptions, and impositions of the dominant culture. Intersectionality multiplies connections and amplifies perspectives. Affordances like these can free us to navigate our timelines on our own terms, to rethink our pasts and reframe our futures. This track explores how complexities of positionalities improve our ability to design models, methods, practices, and strategies compatible with more equitable futures across all our identities.

The value of design in the commercial sector has been studied for years across various disciplines, but in fragmented ways, each employing their own research methods. In the Special Interest Group ‘Designing Retail and Service Futures’, linked to this track, we strive to better understand the value of design in the commercial sector, including closely linked disciplines, such as retail and hospitality design, service design, product and fashion design, branding and graphic design, marketing and business economics, design management, environmental psychology, interior design and architecture. Why? Recent developments, accelerated by the pandemic, demonstrate a growing convergence between retail, hospitality, and …

Exhibiting The Museum: Interrogating Spaces Of Institutional Knowledge Production Through Interactive Print Design, Malcolm Church
University Honors Theses
This thesis explores the role of museums as active agents in the production of cultural and historical knowledge, focusing on the ethical implications of exhibition design and institutional practices. By examining the history of museums from ancient Greece to the modern era, with a focus on the Modern era, the research highlights how these institutions have perpetuated Eurocentric narratives and colonial ideologies through the collection and display of artifacts. Through interviews, participant observations, and historical analysis, this study uncovers the often-hidden decisions behind exhibition design and their impact on public perception. The culmination of this research is an interactive print …
Resisting The Historical And Geographical “Other”: The Role Of Expertise In Video Game Music, Tommy Dainko
Resisting The Historical And Geographical “Other”: The Role Of Expertise In Video Game Music, Tommy Dainko
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Video games create rich, virtual worlds for players to explore. Game developers have often utilized exoticism, allowing players to experience the “Other” from the comfort of home. Music is a powerful tool to evoke Otherness and can reinforce stereotypes about the past and different cultures. This thesis looks at recent games where developers have collaborated with expert musicians either from the culture depicted or with expertise in historical performance practices. I document two purposes these collaborations can serve. First, the use of expert musicians creates a veneer of authenticity allowing developers to market the games as “authentic” experiences. Second, these …

Flower Study, Haven Hinds
Undergraduate Theses, Capstones, and Recitals
This project is a study into extinct flowers, their histories, environments, biology, colors, and assigned personalities then manifested in 3D models and a digital book. The goal was to select six flowers with interesting histories and or cultural connections. Since the flowers can, for the most part, not be seen or kept they were created in Blender as accurately as possible. To give people a means of connection with the flowers, each was assigned a personality based on different factors. These factors could be the colors they possess, where geographically they thrived, parts of their history, and biological factors. To …
