Masculine Women, Feminine Men, And Androgyny: Gender Expression In Ancient Rome, Samuel Cash Apr 2023

Masculine Women, Feminine Men, And Androgyny: Gender Expression In Ancient Rome, Samuel Cash

Student Research Symposium

Transgender individuals are erased from the historical narrative due to little definitive evidence of their existence in language, literature, or the archaeological record. Items like clothing, textiles, and wigs, which distinguished them from cisgender people, are largely lost to time. However, one way that we can view gender nonconformity is through art. Recently, historians recognized that homosexuality in antiquity was common. It took several centuries to come to the consensus that queer individuals existed. Gender identity and the complexity of gender expression in the ancient world is still debated among historians. While historians tend to negate the existence of transgender …

Victorian Architecture In Modern Day Living, Sarah Haslam Apr 2023

Victorian Architecture In Modern Day Living, Sarah Haslam

Student Research Symposium

The Victorian era was a period between 1820 and 1914 around the time of Queen Victoria’s reign. It was a time when the population and economy were growing, and Britain was the most powerful empire in the world. During this period, Britain was the cultural capital of the English-speaking world. The culture and art during this time were picturesque, rich, and dramatic. Much of Victorian design consisted of decorative details and rich color combinations.Society has shifted to more modern design with clean lines, neutral color schemes, and minimalistic details. Over the years, we have lost quality and detail. Many homes …

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder with a wide spectrum of different symptoms in varying forms and varying levels of severity. ASD can be detected and diagnosed in a child as early as three years of age. Because of the range of symptoms and the range of severity in those symptoms, those with Autism Spectrum Disorder experience their own strengths and challenges. When it comes to designing for people with ASD, especially children, many aspects of design need to be taken into account in order to make a space as comfortable and as stimulating or as non-stimulating as …

Design For The Betterment Of Senior Living, Summer V B Miller

Student Research Symposium

My great-grandparents have always been an inspiration to me, their smiles could light a room. They had always been a big part of the community and I could tell they were craving these connections in their living facility but were living in an environment that did not nurture new relationships. Through design senior living facilities can encourage connection, hobbies, and good quality of life. By using research regarding the proper use of natural light, color, and design we can create atmospheres worthy of anyone's beloved family members.

Elementary Education In Ethiopia, Sarah Wiscomb Apr 2023

Elementary Education In Ethiopia, Sarah Wiscomb

Student Research Symposium

In developing and developed countries alike, children do not have access to basic education because of inequalities that originate in sex, health and cultural identity (ethnic origin, language, religion). These children find themselves on the margins of the education system and do not benefit from learning that is vital to their intellectual and social development. Factors linked to poverty such as unemployment, illness and the illiteracy of parents, multiply the risk of non-schooling and the drop-out rate of a child by 2. Undeniably, many children from disadvantaged backgrounds are forced to abandon their education due to health problems related to …

The Body Is Only A Vessel, Victoria Johnson Apr 2023

The Body Is Only A Vessel, Victoria Johnson

Student Research Symposium

The body is only a vessel treats funeral homes less as venues for the exhibition of embalmed bodies and more like vessels constructed to fulfill whatever needs of those left behind, documenting how funeral practices aren’t so much a dance with death but a shuffle around it. By exploring the mundanity of death and the implied tension between the present life and the afterlife, the project visualizes quiet emblems of loss through texture, light, and space. Doors and windows serve as allegories to “the other side,” as impressions of light and shadow demonstrate the delicate balance between life and death. …

Retirement Community Living Center, Abbigail Epperson Apr 2023

Retirement Community Living Center, Abbigail Epperson

Student Research Symposium

When researching the best way to design for a retirement community living center (RCLC) there were a couple specifics I wanted to focus on. The first being color, specifically how color can help direct people around a specific spaces (wayfinding). The RCLC is a large building, getting lost can easily happen for seniors. The second is how lighting and color of light can effect the health and safety of the seniors living in the RCLC.

Re-Imagining Labor And Delivery Facilities In Hospitals, Kenley Roberts Apr 2023

Re-Imagining Labor And Delivery Facilities In Hospitals, Kenley Roberts

Student Research Symposium

This labor and delivery hospital wing has been redesigned with the woman’s needs in mind. Modern mothers want more natural birth experiences. There is many popular fads going around where women are having at home and underwater births. This is unsafe especially if complications arise and cannot get to the hospital fast enough. These re-imagined labor and delivery rooms create a safe environment that feels less like a sterile hospital and more like a home. These hospital rooms provide better comfort for the mother when laboring and delivering as well as the family.

Traveling With A Purpose: Sustainable Tourism, Nina Rossman Apr 2023

Traveling With A Purpose: Sustainable Tourism, Nina Rossman

Honors Theses

The act of traveling is often seen as exciting for many travelers looking for adventure or to experience something different than their everyday routines. However, many current tourism trends force negative burdens onto local communities and environments. For instance, when development increases consumption in an area where natural resources are scarce to begin with, it can put pressure on those resources. There is a certain level of visitor use that an environment can manage; negative impacts occur when the changes in visitor use exceed this limit.[1]

While tourist destinations experience negative impacts from the tourism industry, tourism also supports …

Am I Another You?, Laura Diane Cobb Apr 2023

Am I Another You?, Laura Diane Cobb

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

On my birth certificate are the names of my parents, though the name of my father stands in opposition to my genealogy. The script of his signature conceals my birth as donor conceived (DC). The truth of my origin would lay dormant for years behind his scrawl, burying my true heritage beneath the stories of my social father’s ancestry.

Learning the truth, I began to reevaluate my identity. Searching for myself along waterways, I explored the shores of the Platte River as if by knowing its sandbars, flora, and fauna, I would come to know myself. In searching the land, …

Best Practices For Social Media Branding, Allison Myers Apr 2023

Best Practices For Social Media Branding, Allison Myers

Honors College Theses

Social media is a fast growing marketplace for businesses to advertise themselves to established and potential consumers. Each platform has different algorithms, demographics, and ways for users to interact and connect. Even with a constantly growing research field and course options around the subject, understanding the behaviors of viewers on each app can still be a tough guessing game. Therefore, I have used both research studies and online courses, to present a strategy with which to efficiently and effectively market one’s business for Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. I then present ways to understand the success of this and personal marketing …

Burn & Ashes, Maya S. Leshaw Apr 2023

Burn & Ashes, Maya S. Leshaw

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"Many of my paintings are me challenging myself with different mediums. Much like my other paintings, this piece focused on trying something I hadn't seen before. In many ways, the process was both trial and error. This painting, 'Burn & Ashes,' was an experiment. It focused on breaking the boundaries of fire and paper."
