An artist book is an art object that expressly utilizes the linear, time-based form of a book in a way that will best serve the artist’s intentions. The contents of this 16 page book are an expansion of the ideas and themes in my BFA thesis show. This will include original writing, drawings, watercolor paintings, prints, and collaged elements that will inform each other artistically. The title of this art book refers to the circumstances and ideas that inform my sense of self-perception, and how I relate to others.

Ready, Fire, Aim! Creating Game Animation In Restraint, Jarrett Mcgill
Master of Fine Arts in Digital Media Culminating Experience
Just like other artistic disciplines, animators are tasked with bringing characters to life through movement, whether for personal or professional motives. Games are a diverse field that sees a wide range of animation needs, but there lie consistent threads that lead to the success of a video games movements aesthetically and functionally. For aspiring animators there remains one consistent question: what does it mean and entail to create animation in the highly competitive game industry? This culminating experience paper aims to discuss the similarities and differences between student and professional work to highlight the importance and what it entails to …
Viewer Interactions In Animation, Megan Smith
Viewer Interactions In Animation, Megan Smith
Master of Fine Arts in Digital Media Culminating Experience
The art of animation can be viewed in a multitude of ways. Passive viewing, in which an audience is merely observing the acting and are unable to alter the animation in any way, such as watching a TV show or movie. Interactive camera viewings, such as Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality, in which the viewer can manipulate the content visually in the same way you observe the world, by moving the camera around in a digital space. Interaction-dependent viewing describes animations such as video games, where the player has full control of the character’s actions and the timing of those …
Lighting Styles And Moods In Unreal Engine, Maggie Shelton
Lighting Styles And Moods In Unreal Engine, Maggie Shelton
Master of Fine Arts in Digital Media Culminating Experience
This writing covers the process of lighting stylized and realistic scenes in different moods in Unreal Engine. Lighting can be used to express a mood in an environment, which can aid storytelling in films and games. Lighting in Unreal consists of positioning directional lights, sky lights, spot lights, point lights, and rect lights, as well as various fog effects that help create the ambiance of the scene. This project utilizes free Epic Games Pack content to show the lighting process for different moods in several environments. The use of lights and colors are an important part of designing a game …
Lighting And Furniture In Higher Education: The Impact Of Classroom Environmental Features On Student Learning Perceptions, Robert Mcdonald
Lighting And Furniture In Higher Education: The Impact Of Classroom Environmental Features On Student Learning Perceptions, Robert Mcdonald
Honors Theses
Universities worldwide are undertaking extensive renovations and new construction projects to enhance their facilities. These efforts include upgrading flooring, repainting walls, purchasing new furniture, and updating lighting. With many outdated classrooms, institutions redesign older spaces and invest in more modern facilities to create comfortable and collaborative environments. Researchers and commercial manufacturers have studied the significant impact of classroom environments on students' mental well-being, perceptions, and learning performance. However, while research shows the effects of school environments on Pre-K - 12 students, limited studies have focused on the impact of classroom environments in higher education. This research aims to fill this …

The Metaverse Adoption Rates & User Satisfaction, Shannon Ketura Kling
Theses
The Metaverse concept is inspired by the vision of a digital utopia where you can be and do anything and everything you want. The Metaverse is thought to provide access to all kinds of entertainment and projects through virtual spaces as a world completely free from human limitations. The Metaverse platform satisfies individuals who seek to escape reality through forms of addictive and appealing integrations solely available through virtual and digital media. Although primarily centered around social connectivity and entertainment through digital means, the Metaverse also offers an entirely new ecosystem for developers, ads, apps, and other new digital innovations. …
Ni De Aqui Ni De Alla..., Jc Santistevan
Ni De Aqui Ni De Alla..., Jc Santistevan
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Ni de aqui ni de alla navigates the complexities of belonging to two cultures-Mexican
and American-while not fully identifying with either. By visualizing liminal spaces,
migratory patterns, and quotidian subject matter the work serves as a metaphor for
the Latinx experience in the United States-an experience defined by conflicts between
conformity and resistance, individuality and community, spirituality and secularism,
alienation and belonging. "Black and white are the colors of photography…..they
symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair," Robert Frank once said, and it is
through a nonlinear installation of black and white imagery that I seek to describe the
push …
Personal Details, Ben Nathan
Personal Details, Ben Nathan
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In 2022 I lost my Paternal Grandmother. I found that in addition to the loss of a dear matriarch I mourned everyday things lost to the past. From furniture to childhood relationships, I was made keenly aware of their absence. As I longed to spend more time in the past, I created a studio practice of printing and drawing, whereby I enable myself to spend hours a day in quiet introspection, just drawing and reflecting on my life as expressed by personal details.
My work melds renderings of everyday spaces and objects from memories of childhood and my present experience …

Rethinking Graphic Design Pedagogy For The Cuny Academic Commons: On Process, Generosity, And Creative Collaboration In Mapping A Foundation Graphic Design Course For Faculty And Instructors, Suzanne Dell'orto
Publications and Research
The creation of an Open Education Resource with the CUNY Academic Commons for a foundation course in graphic communication at Bernard M. Baruch College, City University of New York (CUNY) is a natural extension of the generous visual and written communication that is at the heart of Graphic Design. Graphic designers are inherently collaborative, working through a shared visual and written language to communicate. This Open Educational Resource (OER) serves as a base template to be shared department-wide with all instructors at CUNY and beyond to provide a framework for instruction for this studio course that is taught as a …
The Siren Of San Francisco, Emily Gage
The Siren Of San Francisco, Emily Gage
Whittier Scholars Program
The Siren of San Francisco is a story I have been interested in telling for the longest time focusing on the coming of age of the main character, Mia, and how she deals with change through gaining the power of shapeshifting. A lot of the graphic novel explores the relationships between Mia, her mom, and her close friends and how her relationships with them change during this transitional period.
The driving force behind this story was my enduring interest in relationships, identity, feminism, and how people can shape the people around them, including themselves. I approached this particular story from …

The Connection Between Gen Z And Online Fast Fashion Media; Aiming To Create A Sustainable Future In Fashion., Rachel Peters
The Connection Between Gen Z And Online Fast Fashion Media; Aiming To Create A Sustainable Future In Fashion., Rachel Peters
School of Art Undergraduate Honors Theses
It is impossible to think about culture in the past two decades without referencing social media. My generation, commonly known as Gen Z (born between 1997-2010), has been on the forefront of social media development. One of the first generations to grow up with some form of unfiltered online social experience, Gen Z has been hard wired to consume media. While using social media alongside my peers, I have observed a problem that has resulted from this: mass consumption. A mass consumption of food, beauty products, home decor, and clothing in particular. On social media we see hundreds of videos …
Existentialism And Creative Practice, Catherine Hudgens
Existentialism And Creative Practice, Catherine Hudgens
School of Art Undergraduate Honors Theses
The creative process mimics the existentialist philosophy of human freedom and the responsibility to create one’s own meaning in life through an emphasis on invention, experimentation, and ceaseless becoming. Through my body of work, I examine the meaning-giving capacities of the viewer and creator as agents involved in a work of art. The sculptures, as well as found objects, have the power to illuminate the human circumstances they emerged from, while the process of making is also the process of learning, where objects can be used to understand ourselves and the world. Philosophical concepts can be accessed through art in …
Minyan, Sophia Goldberg
Minyan, Sophia Goldberg
Art and Art History Honors Projects
Minyan is a full-scale art installation that recreates my memory of the synagogue sanctuary my family attended when I was a child. Salient furniture: a bimah, chairs, and a mechitza have been welded from wire and covered in fabric. These items are arranged in their traditional locations, inviting viewers to enter the “sanctuary” space and walk among the furniture. In place of an ark hangs a handmade tallit. The recreation of this familiar space was part of my effort to understand what Judaism means to me and how my identity as a trans and queer person resides within Jewish space. …
The Scenic Design: Songs For A New World By Jason Robert Brown, Morgan Mcinnis
The Scenic Design: Songs For A New World By Jason Robert Brown, Morgan Mcinnis
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Songs for a New World by Jason Robert Brown was produced by the University of Arkansas Department of Theatre as the final show of the 2022-2023 season. The musical comprises sixteen independent songs taken from Brown's work on various projects, coming together to create a collection of scene-songs that examines life and the choices we make. While each song's storyline is different and musically distinctive, each presents similar stories of characters facing a moment of decision in their lives and an opportunity to transition from old to new. The result is neither an ordinary musical nor revue but a theatrical …

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
I am a storyteller.
I just happen to paint, draw and sculpt my stories more often than I write them. Thematically, I gravitate towards stories that speak about ecological and humanitarian concerns. Fantasy illustration is where I can create with the greatest freedom and indulge my love of crafting stories, and also as a form of escapism. As the author
Ursula K. Le Guin quotes, “If the direction of escape is towards freedom, what then is ‘escapism’ an accusation of?” Long running series of programs, films and books attest to this desire to be engaged at a deeper, more meaningful …
When I Grow Up, Maria Trinidad
When I Grow Up, Maria Trinidad
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Ever since I was a kid, I have had this fear that still lingers today: the fear of being an adult. It’s my ongoing fear.
I look back to my childhood. I find comfort. I was happy and stress-free. In my childhood, I was unrestrained and enjoyed my innocence. It was my “happier times”. I did not have the worries of responsibilities and burdens. That mindset changed when I realized my father had two full time jobs. I stopped acting my age and became more independent. I didn't want to trouble my parents with school or personal issues. Now I …

Witness, Revival, Testimony, Laura Ann Schroeder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The artist, Laura Ann Schroeder, discusses her Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibition, Witness, Revival, Testimony, which was installed at Tipton Gallery in Johnson City, TN from March 2, 2023 through March 31, 2023, with a public reception held on March 24, 2023. The exhibition consisted of a collection of sculptural works and installations that evoke scenes and memories from the artist’s childhood. This body of work deconstructs the traditional family dynamic and the private domestic space through recreations of everyday life. The artworks are primarily made with repurposed consumer textiles and techniques like stitching and quilting that have historically …
Procedural City Generation With Combined Architectures For Real-Time Visualization, Griffin Poyck
Procedural City Generation With Combined Architectures For Real-Time Visualization, Griffin Poyck
All Theses
The work and research of this paper sought to build upon traditional city generation and simulation in creating a tool that both realistically simulates cities and their prominent features and also creates aesthetic and artistically rich cities using assets that combine several contemporary or near contemporary architectural styles. The major city features simulated are the surrounding terrain, road networks, individual buildings, and building placement. The tools used to both create and integrate these features were created in Houdini with Unreal Engine 5 as the intended final destination. This research was influenced by the city, town, and road networking of Ghost …
I Come Creeping: Remembering The Battle Of Blair Mountain In Graphic Narrative, Ellie James
I Come Creeping: Remembering The Battle Of Blair Mountain In Graphic Narrative, Ellie James
Senior Honors Theses
Between August 24 and September 4 of 1921, approximately 10,000 West Virginia coal miners marched to Blair Mountain in Logan County in a militant stand for their right to unionize. Despite its status as the largest labor uprising in United States history, few know or understand the impact of the Battle of Blair Mountain today, even within the borders of West Virginia. This creative project aims to contribute to ongoing efforts to memorialize this period of the West Virginia Mine Wars through the creation of a 10-page comic, titled I Come Creeping, which depicts and is informed by the …
