Graphic Scotland: Visuality And Empire, 1810 – 1913, Laura Michelle Golobish
Graphic Scotland: Visuality And Empire, 1810 – 1913, Laura Michelle Golobish
Art & Art History ETDs
Graphic Scotland: Visuality and Empire, 1810–1913 interrogates the aesthetic, technological, and literary conventions used to represent Scotland’s character in nineteenth-century publications. Beginning in the late eighteenth century, publishers, authors, and readers began to correlate the material format of prints, books, illustration, and bookbinding with individual and national character. Periodicals and literature drew the correlations between the aesthetic conventions of picturesque Scottish landscape, physiognomy of Scottish authors, and bookbinding to frame ideas about Scottish character as a didactic model for middle class British and American readers. Thus, Graphic Scotland offers an intertextual reading of three illustrated publications about Scotland–J.R. Osgood’s 1882 …

When Might We Break The Rules? A Statistical Analysis Of Aesthetics In Photographs, Justin Wang, Marie A. Lee, Thomas C.M. Lee
When Might We Break The Rules? A Statistical Analysis Of Aesthetics In Photographs, Justin Wang, Marie A. Lee, Thomas C.M. Lee
College of the Pacific Faculty Articles
High-quality photographs often follow certain high-level rules well known to photographers, but some photographs intentionally break these rules. Doing so is usually a matter of artistry and intuition, and the conditions and patterns that allow for rule-breaks are often not well articulated by photographers. This article first applies statistical techniques to help find and evaluate rule-breaking photographs, and then from these photographs discover those patterns that justify their rule-breaking. With this approach, this article discovered some significant patterns that explain why some high-quality photographs successfully break the common photographic rules by positioning the subject in the center or the horizon …

Building Hca Bridges, Lorraine Fugazzi
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
On June 28, 2021, the incoming residents reported for their first day of orientation at HCA Florida Westside Hospital (HFWH). This GME program is a joint venture and requires the same level of commitment from HCA Florida Northwest Hospital (HFNWH). As a new employee, I was immediately impressed with the residents, leadership, and staff. Everyone was relaxed, excited, attentive, and cooperative. I met people from all over the world, from different religions, and of different sexual orientations. The following day the same group of residents attended orientation at HFNWH and the leadership and staff were equally impressive. I went home …
Participatory Design Towards Digital Democracy, Santiago Augusto Silva, Joon Sang Baek
Participatory Design Towards Digital Democracy, Santiago Augusto Silva, Joon Sang Baek
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The potential contributions of participatory design towards current problems of digital democracy platforms are investigated in this research. Literature review, thematic analysis, and inter-rater reliability test were used to determine the major issues in digital democracy platforms and what approaches and tools from participatory design study and practice can be used to address them, considering that democratic dynamics face similar difficulties in both participatory design, and digital democracy. As a result, a participatory design guide for digital democracy is developed, which included seven proposed strategies for dealing with five common issues of public participation platforms. This work contributes to the …

Soundscape Gardens: An Evaluation On Use Of The Northern Ireland Hospice’S Sound Garden Installation, Isaac Gibson, Pedro Rebelo, Craig Jackson
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The purpose of this paper is to share the results of an evaluation of the Northern Ireland (NI) Hospice’s Sound Garden installation placed at the Somerton Road site in Belfast. The sound gardens are an immersive installation split into three separate garden spaces, each using a combination of outdoor loudspeakers. The Sound Garden is designed to project a growing collection of soundscapes composed by both students, doctoral candidates, and staff from the Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC) at Queen’s University Belfast. This evaluation, which took place in late 2019 as part of a Master of Research, uses both pseudonymised questionnaires …
Preparing For The Pluriverse: Embracing Critical Self-Reflection In Service Design Practice, Shivani Prakash
Preparing For The Pluriverse: Embracing Critical Self-Reflection In Service Design Practice, Shivani Prakash
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper explores how service designers in the public sector can embrace a lens of cultural plurality in their daily design practice. When designing for public services, a gap between the cultural assumptions of the designer and diverse residents is going to emerge. If this gap is not addressed, service design risks enacting harmful oppressive structures. This study develops a process model based on a research through design approach. It describes how a generative feedback loop of critical self-reflection negotiated within design practice could support designers to begin embracing cultural plurality along with concrete examples. The process model addresses the …
The Unfolding Of Textileness In Animated Textiles: An Exploration Of Woven Textile-Forms, Alice Buso, Holly Mcquillan, Kaspar Jansen, Elvin Karana
The Unfolding Of Textileness In Animated Textiles: An Exploration Of Woven Textile-Forms, Alice Buso, Holly Mcquillan, Kaspar Jansen, Elvin Karana
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Designers of textile-based interactive systems tend to treat woven fabrics as static materials and lack deeper understandings of how the textile can be designed for responsive behaviours in artefacts. As a result, in most studies across design and HCI, textiles are employed as substrates for computational, biological, or smart materials. This narrow view limits the potential of textiles that can be programmed to express responsive behaviour through their inherent material qualities. Our paper aims at bridging this gap in the design of animated textile artefacts. We present woven textile-forms where textile structures are programmed to tune the behaviour of low-melt …
Material Metaphors: An Approach To Collaborative Knowledge Production In Transdisciplinary Sustainability Research, Daniela Peukert
Material Metaphors: An Approach To Collaborative Knowledge Production In Transdisciplinary Sustainability Research, Daniela Peukert
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The integration of different forms of knowing and bodies of knowledge, as well as collaborative forms of knowledge production, seems particularly significant for the core of scientific work and in inter- and transdisciplinary processes in sustainability research. Nevertheless, collaborative knowledge production in heterogeneous teams brings up specific challenges. This is where existing methods for group negotiation processes, strongly based on language and text, reach their limits. To fill this gap, design-based methods can be used. They expand the mode of language and text to include the visual-haptic dimension, which allows access to other levels of thinking as it appeals to …

What Legal Design Could Be: Towards An Expanded Practice Of Inquiry, Critique, And Action, Dan Jackson, Jules Rochielle Sievert, Miso Kim, Sankalp Bhatnagar
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Our theme track call for papers invited contributions that explore the role of designers in advancing legal design as an expanded practice of inquiry, critique, and action. Our core motivation for this theme track is our vision for a baseline world where everyone possesses agency to use the law and is equipped to both assert legal rights and question or change the role that law has in and on our lives. We are here deliberately challenging the emerging norms of legal design practice and theory because we feel achieving universal legal agency will entail working with a different attitude toward …
Design As Posture: Developing Enlightened Subjectivity With The Philosophy Of Yoga, Estelle Berger
Design As Posture: Developing Enlightened Subjectivity With The Philosophy Of Yoga, Estelle Berger
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This research aims at supporting designers in developing a both embodied and reflective posture in practice – referred to as “enlightened subjectivity”. A dialogue is set up between the Samkhya, an early Buddhist philosophy at the basis of Yoga, and the design discipline. Grounded in practical experience, this inspirational framework allows approaching the sense-making process occurring in practice, through perception, understanding, action, and relation. This is sustained by professional posture, the specific way in which one invests their activity, giving it substance, meaning and justification. Implications for design education relate to increasing awareness among designers on their own posture, and …

Visualizing Stories Of Sexual Harassment In The Academy: Community Empowerment Through Qualitative Data, Tommaso Elli, Adam Bradley, Uta Hinrichs, Christopher Collins
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper presents the design report of an experimental data visualization art-work that deals with sexual harassment in academic environments. The visualiza-tion employs a qualitative dataset of stories of abuse and aims at nurturing emo-tional involvement by creating connections with the people behind the data. In the paper, we outline our theoretical background, considering previous research on anthropomorphic and artistic visualizations. Successively, we disclose our de-sign approach and discuss the visualizations’ capability to nurture reflection, stimulate conversations, and empower the community of people fighting against sexual harassment in academia and beyond.

Designing Transformative Futures, Ann Light, Colin M. Gray, Kristina Lindström, Laura Forlano, Dan Lockton, Chris Speed
DRS Biennial Conference Series
What makes the design of futures sufficiently transformative? Worldwide, people are aware of the need to change and keep changing to address eco-social challenges and their fall-out in an age of crises and transitions in climate, biodiversity, and health. Calls for climate justice and the development of eco-social sensibilities speak to the need for dynamic and provisional engagements. Such concerns raise age-old issues of inequality and colonialist destruction. Our designs carry the imprint of this current politics, wittingly or unwittingly, into worlds to come. This conversa- tion asked how might we respond fluidly to coming uncertainties, questioning our own practices …

Designing For Transitions And Transformations, Femke Coops, Caroline Hummels, Kees Dorst, Bruce Evan Goldstein, Derk Loorbach, İdil Gaziulusoy
DRS Biennial Conference Series
When looking at society, we see transformative change happening as governments, businesses and citizens all try to find their own ways to address the challenges of sustainability. We postulate that these challenges require new radical design approaches and interventions that can unleash the capacity to achieve desired futures, rather than going round in circles and muddling through in our current systems and leaving the underlying challenges untouched. In this conversation, we’ve explored how design can evoke sustainable and just transitions and transformations, with experts working in these fields.

Who Designs For Policy?, Federico Vaz, Sofía Bosch Gomez
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This conversation asked participants to inquire about the skills and compe- tencies of those engaging in the practice of design for policy. We discussed the profes- sional background and training of people currently working as ‘policy designers’ and the knowledge and abilities these designers contribute when developing and imple- menting public policies, services, and governance. Likewise, we aimed to bring to- gether practitioners and researchers to debate the implications of creating specific dis- ciplinary profiles and how this can shape career paths within public administration. During the conversation, participants offered a set of mindsets, skills, and knowledge that they deemed …
Is Inclusive Design Failing Inclusion? Identifying The Dilemmas At The Core Philosophy And Practices Of Inclusive Design, Luka Kille-Speckter, Farnaz Nickpour
Is Inclusive Design Failing Inclusion? Identifying The Dilemmas At The Core Philosophy And Practices Of Inclusive Design, Luka Kille-Speckter, Farnaz Nickpour
DRS Biennial Conference Series
‘Inclusion’ is aspirationally popular these days, full of complexities, contradictions and compromises. With the rise of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) to the top of societal ‘agenda’, a question worth asking is, are we becoming truly more inclusive, or simply moving towards a version of inclusion which is ‘realistic’, ‘achievable’ and ‘measurable’. What role does Inclusive Design play here and which narrative/s of inclusion is it contributing to? In this conversation, we interrogate the potential paradoxes and dilemmas of Inclusive Design from both a philosophical and a practical point of view. We then ask how these could be categorically captured …
Designing Living Artefacts: Opportunities And Challenges For Biodesign, Raphael Kim, Jiwei Zhou, Eduard Georges Groutars, Elvin Karana
Designing Living Artefacts: Opportunities And Challenges For Biodesign, Raphael Kim, Jiwei Zhou, Eduard Georges Groutars, Elvin Karana
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Biodesign is an emerging form of design practice integrating biological materials and processes, and there is a growing interest in the field for structured conversations to generate insights on how it can be best taught, researched, and disseminated. In our conversations, we began exploring biodesign under the framework of Living Artefacts, in which livingness is prolonged to the use time of artefacts, and understood as a biological, ecological, and experiential phenomenon. Two researchers investigating Living Artefacts, through their short show-and-tell presentations, initiated threads of moderated open discussions. Using the Living Artefacts framework as a departure point, we collectively explored opportunities …

A Marriage In Practice: The Role Of Design Research In The World Of Medical Science, Toban Shadlyn, Leigh Hubbard, Tim Maly, Hannah Dalgish
DRS Biennial Conference Series
For decades, design and medical research have been courting with varying levels of success. Much has been written about the potential of combining design methodologies and medical research in transdisciplinary collaborations (Chauhan et al., 2021; Mishra et al., 2021). The translation of this collaboration from promise to practice can be difficult. Partnerships between design and medical research face dif- ferences regarding how knowledge is produced, exchanged, funded, supported, and deemed successful (Groeneveld et al., 2018). Like any relationship, the two must ne- gotiate hierarchical norms, inharmonious timeframes, and distinctive values. This con- versation led to a robust exchange with designers …

Creating Connections: Social Research Of, For, And With Design, Arlene Oak, Claire Nicholas
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This editorial for the theme track 'Creating connections: Social research of, for, and with design' outlines the underpinning concepts that contributed to a call for papers that would explore social research into the activities and/or outcomes of design practice. This editorial also briefly locates each of the six papers in relation to the track’s interests in how design and the social sciences may be effectively engaged with each other. By exploring some of the empirical details and modes of analysis through which research projects into design practice are undertaken, this set of papers will usefully inform design practitioners and social …

Designing Retail & Services Futures, Katelijn Quartier
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Design has been used since the creation of commercial enterprises and it is rec-ognized for its importance of value creation, especially in forming associations with customers. Also in research, design and the value of it has been a subject of study for many years and from many different disciplines (ranging from product design to marketing, business economics, service design, management, environ-mental psychology, (interior)architecture, etc), but in a rather fragmented way, and with each their own research methods. However, recent developments, that have been accelerated by the pandemic, show that in practice services are be-coming a part of retail and vice …

Inclusive Design: Perspectives, Guidance, And Reflections, Hua Dong, Farnaz Nickpour, Chris Mcginley
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This is the introduction to the papers of the Inclusive Design Practice track, DRS2022. The 11 papers were selected from 22 initial submissions for the ‘Inclusive design practice’ and ‘design research for healthy ageing’ tracks. They covered a range of topics relating to inclusive design, so we combined them into one track to give the audience a broad overview. The papers were classified into three groups: perspectives, guidance, and reflections. They demonstrated scholars’ and practitioners’ interpretation of inclusive design in different contexts, knowledge about design principles and good practice, and critical reflection on history, methodology and practice.
