Exhibition Interpretation And The Visitor Experience, Theresa Ryan
Exhibition Interpretation And The Visitor Experience, Theresa Ryan
Case Studies
This case study explores the techniques used to interpret a commemorative exhibition staged in Dublin city library between the 14th of August and the 31st of October, 2019. The case discusses the way in which multiple media were employed to communicate the exhibition narrative to visitors, and how this resulted in very emotive, personal and meaningful visitor experiences. Through the use of a range of audio-visuals, original images, text, memorabilia and guided tours, the exhibition provided a multi-sensory experience, that engaged different cohorts of visitors with the collections, information and ideas on display. They provided a powerful means of …

Scrubbing Off The Grime, Angelena M. Chaishowarat
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Artist Statement
This piece is centered around isolation and caring for one’s inner child. The inner child is someone each of us has, and it is our job as the adult, to look after, keep safe, and protect this child. Growing up as an Asian American in the southern region of the United States, I felt an immense amount of isolation and lack of belonging. From a young age I felt alone, weird, strange, and out of place. I knew I looked different than most of my classmates, I knew my packed lunch was different, and I knew my last …

Meditations, Alyssa Hennigar
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Artist Statement
Meditations is the second piece in my Meditations Series. I was introduced to meditative or “automatic” drawings in my Drawing II class with Professor McGalliard at the University of North Florida. What resonates so much with me about meditative drawing is the complete freedom in creating art that comes naturally to the movement of a body, the practice of mindfulness, and being in the present. There should be no plan, no thought, no calculations, and no rules when it comes to meditative drawing. It is purely expressive mark-making and therapeutic to the artist’s mind, which often gets tied …

Creating; Kind, Jordan Boutelle
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Artist Statement
As a printmaker, I use the versatility of the medium to create diverse representations of the environment and society each of us are placed in. These contexts are the “tool kit” we are provided to forage together our own identities and relationships. The piece Creating; Kind represents the individual in a moment of time. A set of rigid assets are used to create unique combinations of layered textures, objects, and color that are then cut down to create the element needed for the composition. The contrast between the finite nature of the matrices and substrates used and the …
Collaborative Constructions: Designing High School History Curriculum With The Lost & Found Game Series, Owen Gottlieb, Shawn Clybor
Collaborative Constructions: Designing High School History Curriculum With The Lost & Found Game Series, Owen Gottlieb, Shawn Clybor
Articles
This chapter addresses design research and iterative curriculum design for the Lost & Found games series. The Lost & Found card-to-mobile series is set in Fustat (Old Cairo) in the twelfth century and focuses on religious laws of the period. The first two games focus on Moses Maimonides’ Mishneh Torah, a key Jewish law code. A new expansion module which was in development at the time of the fieldwork described in this article that introduces Islamic laws of the period, and a mobile prototype of the initial strategy game has been developed with support National Endowment for the Humanities. The …
Questions Of Canon In Gilbert Hernandez's "Palomar" Comics, Martin Dolan
Questions Of Canon In Gilbert Hernandez's "Palomar" Comics, Martin Dolan
Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal
While questions of misrepresentation are starting to be addressed in academia — acknowledging racial, cultural, gender, and artistic diversity — there is still much work to be done to close the gap between the literary canon and what contemporary literature actually looks like. These efforts have been a step in the right direction, but representation of unconventional literatures is often spotty, boiling down entire literary scenes into one book. This is especially true for those that offer formal or structural challenges – including multilingual and graphic narratives that don’t easily fit into a canonical “box.”

Exploring The Pulse Of Design And Music: The Impact Of Visual Rhythm In Design For Auditorily Impaired Music Students, Nina Marie Tedeschi
Exploring The Pulse Of Design And Music: The Impact Of Visual Rhythm In Design For Auditorily Impaired Music Students, Nina Marie Tedeschi
Masters Theses
Auditorily impaired music students struggle to understand musical rhythms and patterns which can lead to frustration, low self-esteem, lack of developing musical skills, and reduced music appreciation. Often, the needs of those with hearing challenges are overlooked in the curriculum planning process. This research aims to show the importance of providing appropriate learning methods and materials for music students who are hearing impaired. Specifically, this study focuses on the elements of patterns, repetition of patterns, and rhythm within the visual designs used in the instruction of musical elements. The methods used in this research are based upon observation, investigation, and …

Dress The Mess: An Art Therapy Awareness Social Media Marketing Campaign For Young Adults Dealing With Trauma, Victoria Leigh Alba
Masters Theses
This research analyzes the effects of art therapy on young adults between the ages of 18-29 dealing with emotional trauma. The research includes an in-depth exploration of various types of art therapy: visual art, dance, music, photography, and visual journaling. Furthermore, the study explores the lack of awareness of art therapy and how, through a social media awareness campaign, the narrative can be advanced to promote art therapy awareness. Finally, this paper aims to provide insight and practical strategies through a social marketing guerilla campaign, “Dress the Mess,” by incorporating photography, graphic design, and the social media platform Instagram to …

Decameron Row, In Memoriam, Imaginary Places
Decameron Row, In Memoriam, Imaginary Places
Schmucker Art Catalogs
In Boccaccio’s 14th-century work Decameron, a group of friends avert the loneliness of a quarantine during the Black Death by squatting together in an abandoned villa outside of Florence and telling each other stories: 10 people x 10 days = 100 tales. Their stories give them solace (and a bit of bawdy fun).
When the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, we were inspired by Boccaccio’s belief that sharing stories is a salve for isolation, but we were a group of friends separated from one another by space and time. We could not squat together in a Florentine villa like Boccaccio’s characters, …
Confuse The Issues: Art, Text, And Identity, Shannon Egan
Confuse The Issues: Art, Text, And Identity, Shannon Egan
Schmucker Art Catalogs
Confuse the Issues: Art, Text, and Identity features text-based works by prominent contemporary artists of color who demonstrate the power of language. Not only are the words central to the compositions of each photograph, sculpture, and print, but they also provide expressions of identity, reflections on history, and calls to action. In reading both the linguistic and aesthetic narratives in the works on display, a viewer encounters stories that are at once critical and inclusive, verbal and visual, personal and political. The artists use assertive poetry, dynamic admonitions, and a clear naming of victims of police violence to question white …

Let's Play!: Sports And Games In Art And Culture, Macey Cohen, Hagen Krebs, Paul Pelham, Kate Sallee, Devyn Wesolowski, Yan Sun
Schmucker Art Catalogs
Regardless of differences across individual lives, cultures, and traditions, one of humanity’s most enduring and joyful acts is that of play. This commonality, however, does not mean that play should be seen as simply a trivial matter. Play is also not merely a matter of winning or losing, but a reflection of the moral and cultural values of society. The exhibition Let’s Play: Sports and Games in Art and Culture features eleven works of art, collected from disparate cultures, time periods, and countries, to demonstrate the productive forces of play in its many iterations. What is central to every work …

Crafting The Intimate Body, Catherine Harper Professor
Crafting The Intimate Body, Catherine Harper Professor
Arts and Design
The intimate body—essentialized in Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party, complicated in Helen Chadwick’s Eat Me—is revisited through discourse on intersex, debate around trans identities and contemporary feminisms, via the subversive actions of radical crafting and visual, textual, material and performic queering.
El Significado Cultural De La Platería Mapuche Contemporánea, Anna Frankel
El Significado Cultural De La Platería Mapuche Contemporánea, Anna Frankel
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Mapuche silver jewelry (rüxan) is one of the best known symbols of the Mapuche people and is an important aspect of their history and cultural tradition. Silver jewelry production reached its peak in the mid-19th century, but declined drastically with the Chilean invasion and annexation of Mapuche territory in 1883. Despite this loss, Mapuche rüxan and rüxafes (silversmiths) exist to this day.
I analyzed the modern use and relevance of mapuche jewelry to understand why this tradition has survived the repression and poverty the mapuche people have faced. I asked the question: What are the roles of silverware in the …

Sustainable Fashion Design Exploration: Transformation To Zero-Waste, Colleen Moretz
Sustainable Fashion Design Exploration
Sustainability has been at the center of my scholarship across the apparel and textile disciplines. Focusing my creative design scholarship on sustainability generates awareness of sustainable issues within the apparel industry to hopefully encourage change in fashion practices. This concentration on sustainability has been an evolution of investigating sustainable design processes through the exploration of transformation, aesthetics, zero waste, and up-cycling.

In The Face Of Conflict, Mohammed Khatib
be Still
In the chaos of conflict, amongst the confusion, emotion, and fear lies truth like the eye of a raging storm. Within this, one may find peace, tranquility, and the storm will follow in suit.

Sorrow Cannot Resurrect, Sharon Mathew
be Still
The magenta skull symbolizes life and death while the sword passing through the skull is a symbol of life’s ever present cycle of conflicts, grief, and sorrow. The ambiguous gray of the sword is used to convey the fact that we will all encounter an incredibly vast variety of struggles throughout the course of our lives. It is also outlined with gold detailing as a play on the phrase “every cloud has a silver lining. As the sword pierces the skull, out pours technicolor tears and blood. The bright colors represent the immense beauty and growth that we can find …

A Photo Documentary: Exploring Queer Identities In Kwazulu-Natal, Nicholas Graves
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Media can be a powerful tool in examining the structures of power that both hinder and advance LGBTQIA+ representation and subsequently, lived experiences. Therefore, being able to understand the varying feelings that everyday South Africans feel towards queer people, will be measured through the media that people consume. For the vast majority of South Africans, this would look like movies, TV soap operas, and discussions that take place on the radio. Understanding the role media plays within the country is vital to understanding the overall progress that has been made.
The media’s ability to reflect lived experiences within gay and …

The Textual Gutter: How Gene Luen Yang Redefines The Gutter In Boxers & Saints To Tell A Transnational Tale, David Lucas Jr
SANE journal: Sequential Art Narrative in Education
This paper attempts to provide a new understanding of the gutter and how it is used to significant effect in Gene Luen Yang's, Boxers & Saints. This research draws upon the work of Scott McCloud to establish a framework for the theoretical applications of the gutter. Most prior research focuses on the gutter within the page. This article demonstrates how Yang pushes the concept of the gutter further by creating a new type of gutter that moves beyond the pages and across texts. Then the research attempts to demonstrate how the idea of the textual gutter heightens the transnational elements …

Memento Mori: The Fragility Of Life, Charles Clary
HTC Distinguished Teacher-Scholar Lecture Series
Charles Clary, associate professor in the Department of Visual Arts at Coastal Carolina University, is the winner of the 2022 HTC Distinguished Teacher-Scholar Award. Clary’s recent exhibit, "Memento Viveraddidle," was on display at CCU’s Rebecca Randall Bryan Gallery, and he delivered a corresponding lecture as the 2022 HTC Distinguished Teacher-Scholar, titled "Memento Mori: The Fragility of Life," on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. in Edwards Recital Hall.
Titles of both the exhibit and the lecture are Latin; Memento Viveraddidle translates to "remember to live," and Memento Mori, "remember you must die." Clary’s recent period of work drew from a …
