Inhumane, Jordan Brown
Inhumane, Jordan Brown
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
My Goal is to bring awareness to the plight of wild creatures who have lost their habitats due to pollution and urban sprawl. I will be making porcelain vessels that influence people to think about their role on the environment. Both terrestrial and aquatic life has been impacted by humans through poaching, non-traditional medical practices, and human activity in the ocean. By making impressionable clay urns, I hope to bring light to these issues that affect animals. Through research I have been enthused by the steep historical forms from Greece, China, and Europe. Their exceptional skill and knowledge of the …
Artists As Assets: Labor And Capital In The Unity Asset Store, D'An Knowles Ball
Artists As Assets: Labor And Capital In The Unity Asset Store, D'An Knowles Ball
English Faculty Publications
The Unity Asset Store sells amateur designers and artists a promise of being able to participate in an idealized, rationalized vision of how the game design industry operates. However, the Unity Asset Store depends on marketing the content created by amateur artists in ways that require the artists to essentially package their work as labor and to mask their role as artists. This essay views labor and capital in the Unity Asset Store through a Marxist lens, informed by Kline, Dyer-Witheford, and de Peuter's (2003) model of technological, cultural, and marketing forces as "three circuits of interactivity" in the mediatized …
The Disappearance Of The Anti-Aesthetic; The Death Of Fashion, Scrap Evans
The Disappearance Of The Anti-Aesthetic; The Death Of Fashion, Scrap Evans
Capstone Showcase
In this essay, Scrap explores the connection between famous nihilist and postmodernist theorists, Dadaism, the concept of the anti-aesthetic, and today's high fashion. They provide a history of nihilism and follow its influence through time upon other social, political, and artistic movements. They then make direct connections between famous theorists' prose and famous fashion designers' collections. Finally, they analyze the current state of the fashion world and discuss their plan of action.
Seaglass: An Animated Rejection Of Narrative Permanence, Alejandra Louise Blackmore
Seaglass: An Animated Rejection Of Narrative Permanence, Alejandra Louise Blackmore
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis explores how popular narrative structures imply that our reality should be stagnant, thereby leaving us as viewers unprepared for the notion of change. I introduce the term “narrative permanence” as a story structure that assumes the foundations of a narrative are absolute. These stories therefore consider structural change as a threat or abnormal. I analyzed examples such as The Simpsons and news coverage of the BP oil spill to demonstrate how popular media frames change as an unnatural occurrence that must be neutralized. My thesis then culminated in an animated short about a person living in a seaside …

Intention is a stage set for all the world to perceive. I intend to shake the status quo, I intend to break loose from that which I think I know, I intend to learn, and yet unlearn, I intend to make and be the most liminal that I can be bridging the spaces in between. I hope in the following lines that you too may come to believe in the we. Down the rabbit hole she goes, into the deep confines of her mind. Upon approaching the curious, contorting caterpillar she’s asked, “Whoooo are yooou, I said AGH WHOO ARE …

Community Through Commonality: Growth Beyond The Academic While In College, Lekesha Parkman
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
I’ve drawn on the knowledge I have gained while attending The University of Akron to complete this project. Before I became a student, I carried myself differently but in my years here I have grown in a variety of areas and have also had the privilege of seeing some of my classmates grow in similar ways. My project is multifaceted and each piece is necessary to the other components. It consists of an essay, interviews, photography and full size portraits. During this process I hoped to convey an appreciation for people and their experiences. The participants included in my project …
The Effects Of Building Envelope Parameters On Energy Performance For High-Rise Buildings In Central Saudi Arabia, Nadia Arafah
The Effects Of Building Envelope Parameters On Energy Performance For High-Rise Buildings In Central Saudi Arabia, Nadia Arafah
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Sustainable design is achievable based on the social, economic, and environmental pillars interrelated with energy consumption worldwide. Saudi Arabia is one of the largest countries that consume massive amounts of energy, mainly for generating electricity to operate buildings and cope with population growth. Despite Saudi Arabia’s fast economic development, building envelopes in Saudi Arabia deserve more research attention to address energy consumption and environmental challenges. With the extremely hot weather in the country, building occupants use air conditioning extensively to overcome the heat and achieve thermal comfort. This research analyzed building envelope variables in an existing building in Riyadh, Saudi …

A Renaissance: The Absurd Retelling Of Mostly True Events, Erica R. Hitzman
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Throughout the following you will be taken on a fantastical retelling of the exhibition A Renaissance, and some of what lead up to it. Through the eyes of various shifting perspectives you will explore the relationships between the artist, her art, and the viewer in the hopes of unveiling how the work plays into feminist theory, its place in the Zeitgeist, and the motivations behind it. Each perspective is formatted differently, to visually mirror the shift in perspective. Presented in the first person and aligned to the right, the account of the artist discusses the process, emotion, and inspiration behind …

The Cuyahoga Valley Resource And Development Center, Lindsay Shook, Suzanne Kroll, Donald Alexander, Emily Booth
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Sustainable design is a growing movement in the industry. As interior designers, it is our obligation to be knowledgeable of how our designs, and therefore the construction, impact the environment around us. Cuyahoga Valley National Park is underdeveloped for a reason, and this section of nature should be preserved. The proposed Cuyahoga Valley Resource and Development Center will be located just outside of the national park boundaries and utilize sustainable design practices and principles. It will serve as a museum and educational resource for the surrounding community to learn more about The Valley.
A Study In Transparency, Rachel Wilson
A Study In Transparency, Rachel Wilson
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
In a generation that feels more lost than ever, we need transparency in order to feel less alone. We need to see others, and we need to truly see ourselves. This is my way of being seen, and in turn, helping others to feel seen and understood. When I was in middle school I began to record my daily life and thoughts in journals, which evolved to help me cope as I grew up. In putting these pages on display, I’m presenting myself. That’s Rachel Wilson. I’m a writer, a designer, an artist, maybe a song writer. Maybe a lot …
Misled Youth, Mark Tan
Misled Youth, Mark Tan
Theses and Dissertations
I’m a first-generation Canadian who was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario by Asian immigrants. I have migrated to the United States and lived here for 7 years. Through my work, I express the emotional value of preconceived notions, disconnectedness, and longing in search of finding place and acceptance within a community. Drawing from memory, personal narrative, emotion, and perception, I manipulate data into lines, forms, and materials through a subjective human experience from the lens of a non-citizen. By projecting the migration movement of my family lineage from China and the Philippines to Canada as well as my path …

Jackson Women's Health, No. 19-1392, 597 U.S. nullified the precedent of Roe v. Wade on June 24th, 2022. We examined the interplay effects of device types (touch vs. non-touch) and the tactile sensitivity (fur vs. woven) on the product attitudes mediated by the mental simulation for touch. The participants from MTurk were randomly assigned to one of two tactile conditions. Responses from those who used tablets (n=83, touch device) and laptops (n=96, non-touch device) were included in the analysis. The main effects of device types and tactile-sensitivity on the mental simulation for touch were significant. The interaction effect of device types and tactile sensitivity was also significant. Those participants seeing the less tactile-sensitive product showed greater mental simulation …

Cherokee Abstract Artist Leon Polk Smith: A Convergence Of Traditions, Danielle Montanino
Dissertations and Theses
This paper analyzes how Leon Polk Smith's Indigenous roots and upbringing in Indian Country had a significant impact on his artistic practice in a time of discrimination and segregation in the United States. Through examination contextualizing his work within the history and political events of the Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Choctaw Nations it is revealed how Polk Smith developed a formal language that could navigate both worlds and be viewed through a pure abstraction lens or a lens embodying his Indigenous traditions. In addition to his Indigenous philosophies, Mesoamerican Inca Nation’s cultural motifs further ground Polk Smith’s Indigenous aesthetic, and avant-garde …

Transdisciplinarity In Experience Design: A Global Survey Of Higher Ed Programs In Exd/Xd, Yvonne Houy
Creative Collaborations
In our age of ubiquitous devices and digital media it is the perceived value of the end-to-end experience that brings people to a place. Designing inspiring and emotionally engaging end-to-end experiences requires experts in a wide range of disciplines committed to an interdisciplinary collaboration that can arrive at transdisciplinary design - the sum becomes greater than its parts.
Civil engineering, hospitality, business, psychology, digital User Experience (UX) design, and experience data analysis need to be seamless integrated with the fine and performing arts and design fields:
-
Architecture, interior, landscape and sound design actively engage the senses.
-
Graphic and fine arts …

The auction of the Royal Jewels from the Bourbon-Parma Family is considered iconic. It took place as an evening sale at the Mandarin Oriental in Geneva, on November 14, 2018 amid great interest from collectors and the media alike. It comprised a hundred lots from the collection of the Bourbon Parma Family, several of them with royal provenance. The most important pieces were ten objects that are believed to have belonged to Marie Antoinette’s personal jewelry collection. The white-glove sale achieved a total price of $53.1 million (CHF 53.5 million). This was a new record for a royal jewelry auction, …
Deconstructing Narratives About Artistic Mastery In Art Education, Mark Graham
Deconstructing Narratives About Artistic Mastery In Art Education, Mark Graham
Faculty Publications
A recurring challenge for art educators is how to include Black voices within the art curriculum. This challenge seems ever more relevant as a pandemic underlined the inequalities and injustices within our culture and society. A critical question for many White visual arts educators is: How do I, as a White educator, bring important issues of race, privilege, ideology, gender, and anti-racism into the art classroom? How can I help students to understand Whiteness as a cultural text and set about destabilizing White identity? How does one make space for an antiracist pedagogy? One way to begin conversations about these …
