Paulina Neuschwander's Portfolio, Paulina Neuschwander

Honors College Portfolios

This portfolio is a compilation of work I have completed throughout my journey to get my bachelor’s degree in Marketing with a minor in Digital Media Arts at Duquesne University. I love the way my minor complemented my major, in that I could combine my love of consumer behavior and research with my love of visual design and creativity. Now, I can not only complete market research, but I can also present my findings in a visually attractive way. That being said, through my time at Duquesne, I have learned to be more than just a “businesswoman.” I have been …

Pattern Project - Emblems Of Colonialism - Thomas Day S-Curve, L.T Moon

Pattern Research Project

The Emblems of Colonialism project is a part of the broader Pattern Research Projects created by design history and design studio faculty members, Emily Smith and Dr. Sara Reed. Students in VCU Interior Design were asked to examine a pattern or motif used on a decorative object or surface during the colonial era in the Americas. During the 15th through 18th centuries, a period of colonialism forced new relationships between European countries and places in what is now known as North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. This project explores how colonial era patterns reveal power structures, othering, and the …

Grayscale Portfolio, Brandon D. Chambers

2020 Symposium Creative Works

This collection is intended to evoke the sensory details that are intensified by grayscale photography. Although photography is a visual arts medium, it possesses the potential to engage the viewers’ auditory, tactical, and olfactory senses. The color symbolism theory argues that through natural association and psychological symbolism, colors have specific connotations and therefore, elicit certain emotions. If this is, in fact, the case, what then can be gained from an image that is void of color? I feel that color often distracts the viewer from the intimate details of the images and prevents them from fully immersing themselves in the …

2020 Symposium Creative Works

Created using instant film, this piece was taken apart and destroyed before a new image was formed. Looking at the image from the back and scraping and sanding at the layers of chemicals was an attempt at finding some remnant of the original image. It is delving into the idea of the importance of content within an image and explores the resurrection of an image in a new way.

Textiles From A Late Roman/Byzantine Ecclesiastical Centre At Abu Sha’Ar, Egypt, Lise Bender Jørgensen

Egyptian Textiles and Their Production: ‘Word’ and ‘Object’

Around AD 400 a group of Christians were looking for a new home. An abandoned Roman military fort at what is now called Abu Sha’ar, c. 20 km north of Hurghada on the Egyptian Red Sea coast, became the answer to their prayers. Steven Sidebotham of the University of Delaware excavated the site in 1987-1993. The fort had been established in AD 309-311 to house a mounted unit, the Ala Nova Maximiana, guarding the Via Nova Hadriana. The military phase was however short-lived: the soldiers abandoned the fort before AD 400. The new settlers turned the former military headquarters into …

Drach, Prüss, And The Fifteenth-Century Book Trade, Jonathan Taylor Jan 2020

Drach, Prüss, And The Fifteenth-Century Book Trade, Jonathan Taylor

Extra-Textual Elements

The development of the moveable-type press in the mid-fifteenth century led to the rise of a new industry, the manufacture and trade of printed books. Before this, written works existed as handwritten manuscripts individually produced by scribes.

The printing press allowed works such as the Malleus maleficarum and Fasciculus temporum contained within Portland State University’s codex to be produced in a significantly more efficient manner. The printers of the two volumes contained in the codex, Peter Drach and Johann Prüss, successfully avoided the pitfalls facing early printers to become successful in their trade, and may have actively cooperated in the …

Improving The Inhaler, Kabir Malkani, Jesse Evensky, Bradley Freid, Alex Reibstein, Gregory C. Kane, Md

Phase 1

Background: It is estimated that about 1 in 10 Americans use inhalers to deliver inhaled drugs for respiratory disease such as COPD and asthma. Some studies have shown that up to 84% of people use their inhaler incorrectly, which can cause long term problems and acute flareups. Therefore, improving the inhaler design to allow for ease of use was the main focus of our project.

Methods: We had a discussion with a pulmonary critical care attending who provided information on proper patient inhaler use and common user errors. He also gave us a sample of different inhalers on the market …

Color-Changing Device To Improve Adherence To Foley Catheter Replacement Protocols And Reduce Urinary Tract Infection Frequency, Alexander Straus, Ms, Kurt Hill, Bryn Cross, Jason M. Fields, Md

Phase 1

Background: Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are a major source of patient morbidity and mortality in healthcare settings and have a significant financial impact on the healthcare system. Many hospitals have clinical protocols in place to continually reassess the necessity of indwelling foley catheters and remove them if their use is no longer warranted. However, it is still common for indwelling foley catheters to be overlooked and remain in place, even after meeting criteria for removal. A design project was conducted that sought to improve adherence to clinical protocols, and reduce frequency of CAUTIs, by creating a color-changing device …

Design thinking (human-centered design) is a promising strategy to address health and social justice concerns through the development of innovative products and services that prioritize population needs. This project utilized design thinking to inform suggestions to the design of Hansjörg Wyss Wellness Center that promote a culturally sensitive and welcoming environment in order to improve healthcare outcomes for the refugee population in Philadelphia.

Methods: Standard qualitative data gathering methods were used to gather insight into …

Digitizing The Aura: A Systems Update For The Contemporary Art World, Emilie Trice Jan 2020

Digitizing The Aura: A Systems Update For The Contemporary Art World, Emilie Trice

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the digital tide of the last several decades, the material, metaphysical and economic properties of art have evolved in response to the ever-accelerating growth of cybernetics. The contemporary art ecosystem (CAE) has long been considered “the last unregulated financial market”; then cryptocurrency was invented. Now, blockchain technology has entered the cultural zeitgeist and could radically innovate numerous industries, including the art market. The CAE itself is a network, a system that operates within fundamental parameters and, in that sense, it shares much in common with the philosophies underlying computation, such as systems theory, complexity theory and emergent consensus mechanisms. …

Battleground; Invasive Procedure; Inadequate Protection Poster Series, Anne Giangiulio Jan 2020

Battleground; Invasive Procedure; Inadequate Protection Poster Series, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

These three posters were designed to bring attention to the injustices women face at the hands of men around the world every day—in terms of unequal, gender-biased laws, and inadequate protection under the law that compromises women's safety. My process is to look to everyday objects and see the irony and relationships in them and how they may be linked to ideas in a way that draws the audience's attention. Viewers have been very caught off guard by these posters. This poster series earned a Silver Award in Graphis Competitions Poster Annual 2022

Chalk The Block 2020 Poster, Anne Giangiulio Jan 2020

Chalk The Block 2020 Poster, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

I designed this poster for the annual Chalk the Block event which will hopefully take place in October of 2020, as it has the past 10 years, in downtown El Paso. For the art vendors component of the event, I organize a group of students from my 'Graphic Design 4: Typography' class at The University of Texas at El Paso. Their posters are judged and selected to be on sale in a downtown outdoor booth for the weekend event. All proceeds from the sale of the posters go directly to the student designers.

El Paso Women's History Coloring Book Cover, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

I was asked by the women of the C.L. Sonnichsen Special Collections Department of The University of Texas at El Paso Library to design this cover for El Paso Women's History Coloring Book Cover, Volume 2, A Women's Sufrage Centennial Project. The coloring book will soon be distributed to schools and libraries around the city of El Paso. During this process, I learned that the colors of the U.S. women’s suffrage movement were white, purple, and gold!

The Tedium Is The Message, Anne Giangiulio Jan 2020

The Tedium Is The Message, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

I designed this cross stitch with French knots in response to the #StayHome mandate at the start of the Corona Virus pandemic hitting my city around the middle of March, 2020. Using graph paper and Adobe Illustrator, I designed the layout that I later implemented on 14-count Aida cloth. The point of using an age-old craft technique for this poster is due to how much time counted cross stitch takes, something that staying home with nowhere to go makes possible. Its title is a spoof of communication thinker Marshall McCluhan's famous phrase, "the medium is the message" introduced in his …

This project earned first place, Annual Reports category, in the 2020 Print Awards, presented by Adobe. https://www.printmag.com/post/the-best-graphic-design-of-the-year-announcing-the-winners-of-the-print-awards I designed this Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo 2019 Year-End Report for the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, a Puebloan Native American tribal entity located in the Ysleta section of El Paso, Texas. The Oceans Above Us: An Augmented Reality Experience, Chris Nalani Dimeo Jan 2020

The Oceans Above Us: An Augmented Reality Experience, Chris Nalani Dimeo

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Augmented reality holds the potential to be the new fabric of our everyday lives.

Also known as AR, augmented reality is any technology that superimposes graphical information over a real-world environment, whether it be through a smartphone screen or visually projected onto the environment. Though it has existed in various forms for decades, augmented reality development is still widely considered the work of experts in technology-related fields.

In November 2019, however, Adobe unveiled a new augmented reality development platform, Project Aero, along with boasts that the app’s intuitive design and integration with other Adobe programs would place AR creation into …
