None Of Us Faces Judgment Alone: ‘Zurbarán’S Jacob And His Twelve Sons’ At The Frick, Griffin Oleynick
None Of Us Faces Judgment Alone: ‘Zurbarán’S Jacob And His Twelve Sons’ At The Frick, Griffin Oleynick
Catholic Studies Faculty Publications
Our turning to God during Lent, and our experience of new life at Easter, either happens together, as part of a family of faith, or not at all.
A new exhibition of Spanish paintings by the Golden Age master Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664), “Jacob and His Twelve Sons: Paintings from Auckland Castle,” on view through April 22 at the Frick Collection in New York City, provides a refreshing reminder of this dynamic by bringing us into conversation with our religious ancestors, the Old Testament Patriarchs.
The Forgotten : Child Soldiers, Sam Fee
The Forgotten : Child Soldiers, Sam Fee
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Child soldiers have been slowly forgotten about by the public over the last century. There are only a few groups of people are trying to fight for these children. As a visual artist, I created a painting, my work entitled Invisible Children utilizes acrylic and wildfire blacklight paint to symbolize the underreported presence of children in global conflict, the hidden image represents the light we need to shine on these issues.

Unreliable Guides: Introducing, Mapping And Performing Interiors, Edward Hollis
Unreliable Guides: Introducing, Mapping And Performing Interiors, Edward Hollis
Interiority
Whether as teachers listening to students, as designers ‘pitching’ designs to clients, or critics writing about historical spaces, we use speech and gesture to describe interiors. We assume that the interior does not speak on it’s own, but must be spoken for. How do designers, curators, and guides talk interiors into existence? How, more generally should we speak of the interior? This paper will explore this issue through reflection on three encounters between space, speech and gesture in the form of guided tours of historic interiors. It will frame these questions with four contexts: firstly, the evolution of the historical …
Interiority And The Conditions Of Interior, Mark Pimlott
Interiority And The Conditions Of Interior, Mark Pimlott
Interiority
Interiority pertains to the individual’s inner life, rich and set in opposition to the pressures of the world. This interiority has been allied with notions of the exclusive space or refuge of the interior. As a realm of privacy and subjectivity, of projections and receptions, the interior has come to be considered as a realm that, although profoundly affected by infiltrations of the world without, is ‘responsive’ to the individual at its centre. As such, it is a realm of illusions. However, there is another order of interior, a condition of interior, wherein spaces, settlements and territories are ideological realms …
Quasi-Materials And The Making Of Interior Atmospheres, John Stanislav Sadar
Quasi-Materials And The Making Of Interior Atmospheres, John Stanislav Sadar
Interiority
In The Architecture of the Well-Tempered Environment, Reyner Banham presents a parable in which, having come across an amount of wood, a nomadic tribe must decide how to use it to keep warm overnight: build a structure or build a fire (and burn the wood as fuel). The first of these uses the materials directly to create an amenable interior condition using the tangible materiality of geometric construction. The second, however, generates heat from combustion, thereby creating an intangible, graduated, thermal interiority, which one can draw deeper into, by moving closer to the fire, or recede from, by moving away. …

Tanahku Indonesia: Celebrating The Indigenous Interior, Mikhael Johanes, Arif Rahman Wahid
Interiority
Tanahku Indonesia was a week-long, architecture and interior design exhibition showing local earth-based materials to reveal their potential as an integral part of Indonesia’s creative economy development. Curated by Yandi Andri Yatmo and Paramita Atmodiwirjo, the exhibition was held in dia.lo.gue Artspace in Central Jakarta, Indonesia from 8 to 12 November 2017. This exhibition attempted to reveal the materiality of earth-based materials across a broad spectrum, which was not limited to the physical presence of the materials, but more as a reflection of knowledge that was grounded on the deep understanding of their context. This multifaceted exhibition showed various earth-based …
Urban Interiority And The Spatial Processes Of Securitisation In Medellin: A Speculation On The Architectures Of Reassurance, Christina Deluchi
Urban Interiority And The Spatial Processes Of Securitisation In Medellin: A Speculation On The Architectures Of Reassurance, Christina Deluchi
Interiority
Medellín, Colombia, a city best known for its violent history and subsequent radical transformation, hosts multiple political forces of varying degrees of legitimacy. In this context, architecture was mobilised as a physical weapon in the city’s urban regions. As an extension of this architectural condition, the city’s landscape has repeatedly been appropriated and repurposed to enforce state and criminal agency. Medellín’s cultural geography became increasingly unstable as both real and imagined threats lingered in the spaces of every day – apartment towers, gated communities, supermarkets, TV and radio, imbued with violent operational spatial logics.

Tracing The Progression Of Inhabitation Through Interior Surface In Semarang Old Town, Aa Ayu Suci Warakanyaka, Yandi Andri Yatmo
Tracing The Progression Of Inhabitation Through Interior Surface In Semarang Old Town, Aa Ayu Suci Warakanyaka, Yandi Andri Yatmo
Interiority
The capacity of the interior to adapt and transform through time has made the interior space bears the consequences from its past occupancies. The trails of the past are imprinted within the layers of interior surfaces. This paper argues that by utilising the idea of Anthropocene, these surfaces could become the medium to trace the inhabitation processes that happen throughout the life of the building, whether it was in the past, in the present or to predict the future. In particular, this paper attempts to explore and speculate on the progression of inhabitations through the interior surfaces of the buildings …

Effect Of Anthropometric Variability On Middle-Market Aircraft Seating, Tara C. Sriram
Effect Of Anthropometric Variability On Middle-Market Aircraft Seating, Tara C. Sriram
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
A middle-of-market aircraft, or MoMA, is defined as an aircraft capable of flying 180-250 passengers without refueling for 2,300-5,800 miles(~2,000-5,000 nautical miles). As the name suggests, middle-of-market aircraft are positioned in between the market segments served by narrow body (single-aisle) and wide body (twin-aisle) aircraft. This paper presents the findings of a study on the effect of anthropomorphic variability on economy class seating on middle-market aircraft currently in service. The study found that among 130 middle-market LOPAs, the mean seat pitch was greater for US airlines than for Asian airlines. Furthermore, the sampled Asian airlines had a higher preference …

Exhibition catalogue for “Ode to the Sea: Art from Guantánamo” (October 16, 2017-January 26, 2018, President's Gallery, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York). Detainees at the United States military prison camp known as Guantánamo Bay have made art from the time they arrived. The exhibit displays some of these evocative works, made by eight men: four who have since been cleared and released from Guantánamo, and four who remain there. They paint the sea again and again although they cannot reach it. The catalog includes contributions by Trevor Paglen, Solmaz Sharif, Natasha Trethewey, Jericho Brown, and current and …

Interiority
This journal challenges the emergence of various perspectives in defining and developing further design research agenda and promotes multidisciplinary dialogue in exploring the idea of interiority. It also hopefully becomes the trigger for extending the practice of design - architecture, interior design, spatial design and other relevant design fields - to address more appropriately the social, cultural and behavioural aspects of the space inhabitation.

Winter Birches At York Redoubt, Irene Oore
The Goose
This painting of Winter Birches at York Redoubt in Halifax, Nova Scotia reflects the grandeur and beauty of the historic site on which it sits and evacuates the fortification from it. York Redoubt, now a National Historic Park, was constructed in 1793 (just as war broke out between Britain and France) on a bluff at the narrowest point on the outer harbour. It overlooks the entrance to Halifax Harbour at Ferguson's Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Effect Of Knit And Print Parameters On Peel Strength Of Hybrid 3-D Printed Textiles, Ayushi Narula, Christopher M. Pastore, David Schmelzeisen, Sara El Basri, Jan Schenk, Subin Shajoo
Kanbar College Faculty Papers
The influence of knit fabric structure on the adhesion of three-dimensional (3-D) printed textiles was examined. 3-Dprinting was applied to different elastic knitted fabrics with different amounts of prestretch, typical for 4-D fabric construction. The quality of the bond was measured in terms of peel strength. Peel strength was measured by pulling the fabric at 180 degrees from the printed plastic to delaminate the 2 and recording the 10 highest peak values observed during the test. The printed width, the ratio of fabric width of print width, fabric washing, and fabric structure were varied. The specimens were then evaluated for …

Prints On Display: Exhibitions Of Etching And Engraving In England, 1770s-1858, Nicole Simpson
Prints On Display: Exhibitions Of Etching And Engraving In England, 1770s-1858, Nicole Simpson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
During the long nineteenth century, in cities throughout Europe and North America, a new type of exhibition emerged – exhibitions devoted to prints. Although a vital part of print culture, transforming the marketing and display of prints and invigorating the discourse on the value and status of printmaking, these exhibitions have received little attention in existing scholarship. My dissertation aims to answer the question of when, where, and how did print exhibitions emerge during this period. It examines the initial development of these displays in England, home to the earliest print exhibitions and an innovative exhibition culture, from the 1770s …
Alternative Futures: The Creative Reconsideration Of Fashion Objects, Kathryn Roberts
Alternative Futures: The Creative Reconsideration Of Fashion Objects, Kathryn Roberts
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This project is the beginning of what I intend to be a larger, evolving work that seeks to marry the theoretical with the practical when considering fashion objects that have “served their purpose”. The object at the project’s focal point: a worn out pair of blue jeans. My particular focus on jeans is based on the fact that they, alongside the t-shirt, are one of the most ubiquitous and commonly owned pieces of clothing for people all over the world. This wardrobe staple transcends age, race, and class, as it occupies an iconic status that has made them invulnerable to …

The Bronx Was Brewing: A Digital Resource Of A Lost Industry, Michelle Zimmer
The Bronx Was Brewing: A Digital Resource Of A Lost Industry, Michelle Zimmer
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Bronx: a bucolic oasis laden with history, a suburb within city-limits, an urban warzone, and thanks to the recent renaissance, a phoenix of progress rising from the proverbial ashes of the fires that burned through the borough in the 1970’s. But many people are unaware that the Bronx also brewed.
Uncovering the brewing industry of the Bronx tells not only the story of the lost industry, but it also communicates the narrative of the development of the Bronx. The brewers were German immigrants who developed a thriving industry by introducing lager beer to the United States by taking advantage …

Visualizing The Transition Out Of High-Demand Religions, Summer Anne Myers
Visualizing The Transition Out Of High-Demand Religions, Summer Anne Myers
LMU Theses and Dissertations
This research uses a questionnaire and a bridge drawing directive to explore the lived experience of transitioning out of a high-demand religion. Subjects include disaffiliated Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Fundamentalist Protestants who were recruited through a dedicated website via limited promotion in online communities for disaffiliates. Visual and textual responses are analyzed through qualitative coding, with additional analysis performed on the artwork using Hays and Lyons’ (1981) bridge drawing criteria. Results reveal the psychological, social, behavioral, identity, and existential effects of disaffiliation. Results also produce seven emergent themes: ambivalence; embracing uncertainty; social justice; simultaneous transitions; freedom and constraint; growth; and …
