Deconstructing Abject Complacency Of Ascribed Gender, Kyle M. Hooten Jan 2018

Deconstructing Abject Complacency Of Ascribed Gender, Kyle M. Hooten

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

My life has been dedicated to the relentless pursuit of masculinity throughout my transition from female to male. While originally focusing on the physical transition, my attention is now focused on the social aspects of transition. For me, this involved coming out, managing legal name/gender change paperwork, and understanding a newfound, cultural privilege. This is where I draw inspiration to create my work. My process and techniques are informed by Drag Kings and Queens as well as contemporary culture and art. After performing as a Drag King for a year I developed a sense of gender that differed from what …

In Media Res, Christopher Andrew Sisk Jan 2018

In Media Res, Christopher Andrew Sisk

Theses and Dissertations

We are inundated by a constant feed of media that responds and adapts in real time to the impulses of our psyches and the dimensions of our devices. Beneath the surface, this stream of information is directed by hidden, automated controls and steered by political agendas. The transmission of information has evolved into a spiral of entropy, and the boundaries between author, content, platform, and receiver have blurred. This reductive space of responsive media is a catalyst for immense political and cultural change, causing us to question our notions of authority, truth, and reality.

"Seu Tesouro São Penas De Pássaro": Arte Plumária Tupinambá E A Imagem Da América, Amy Buono

Art Faculty Articles and Research

The holistic design concept aimed to honor the physical and spiritual passage of individuals through time through one of UD’s oldest facilities.

Clear As Ice? A Look At The World Below The Surface Of Ice And Water, Diane L. Nadler Jan 2018

Clear As Ice? A Look At The World Below The Surface Of Ice And Water, Diane L. Nadler

Art Theses

Clear as Ice? - a look at the world below the surface of ice and water. When we think of ice we think of something that is cold with a clear or blur color that can be seen in most photographs of snow and ice. When ice melts, it becomes a liquid then it is gone. No one wonders or even gives it a thought; it is simply something that happens.

For my thesis project, I photographed ice from various types of water: tap water (water softener had been added), rainwater, and bottled mountain spring water. All of the photos …

Line Dance, Jessica Peterson Jan 2018

Line Dance, Jessica Peterson

Art Theses

Artist Statement:

My work is based on of every day meandering lines I create while allowing my mind to wander. I draw lines on tightly thrown forms made on the wheel. The lines on my pots range from lines found in abstractions of nature from veins on leaves to wood grains on table tops. Each piece is thrown on the wheel and then receives attention during glazing. With my work I create pieces which can be displayed on the wall and functions on the table as well. The decorative imagery captures what happens when I am practicing automatic drawing on …

Yangzhou Latin Tombstones: A Christian Mirror Of Yuan China Society, Mengtian Bai Jan 2018

Yangzhou Latin Tombstones: A Christian Mirror Of Yuan China Society, Mengtian Bai

Honors Papers

In 1950s, two fourteenth-century tombstones with Latin inscriptions were discovered in Yangzhou, China. Both tombstones were made for an Italian merchant family. The tombstones bear Christian iconography such as the Last Judgment, the Virgin and Child and the martyrdom of St. Catherine of Alexandria, while non-western details are represented as well, including the Mongol garments, Chinese furniture and Islamic and Nestorian gravestones. My research considers the dynamic matrices of various religious and ethnic groups, which concomitantly arrived in Yuan China under an overarching control of the Mongol Empire. By valorizing the pictorial language on the tombstones, I will illustrate how …

Haunted By Solitude: Isolation And Communal Representation In Zanele Muholi's Archive, Michelle Marie Fikrig Jan 2018

Haunted By Solitude: Isolation And Communal Representation In Zanele Muholi's Archive, Michelle Marie Fikrig

Honors Papers

This paper focuses on contemporary South African photographer Zanele Muholi’s (b. 1972) extensive photographic archival project, Faces and Phases, which documents South Africa’s black queer community. The series exists not only as a book published in 2014, but as an exhibition that has been shown globally. In the introduction to their book of the Faces and Phases series Muholi states their goal as “[articulating] the collective pain [black lesbians] as a community experience” (emphasis mine). Yet the series, composed of over two hundred black and white portraits, is made up of photographs of individual black lesbians. This paper explores the …

This Unleavened Bread: Matzot As An Insight Into Iberian History, Culture, And Power Dynamics, Sadie Gelman Jan 2018

This Unleavened Bread: Matzot As An Insight Into Iberian History, Culture, And Power Dynamics, Sadie Gelman

Honors Papers

This paper examines the appearance of matzo, the unleavened bread consumed by Jews on Passover, in Spanish medieval manuscripts. Through a close analysis of decoration present in these depictions, this project will answer the following questions: why are matzot embellished in a certain way, where does this decoration come from, and what does this decoration signify? Given the constantly shifting power dynamics and cross-cultural relations in Iberia, I argue that the social and political climate of Iberia influenced how the matzo was viewed and depicted in Haggadot. Furthermore, I emphasize that the decoration of the matzot wafers were not inspired …

Mapping Architecture As Archive: Stories In The Walls, Caitlin Anne Mccuskey Jan 2018

Mapping Architecture As Archive: Stories In The Walls, Caitlin Anne Mccuskey

Honors Papers

My work explores the relationship between memory and architectural space, narrative and structure. It treats architecture as a physical archive, a record of the past and the present. I work with drawing, screen print, and sculpture to tease out and interpret these narratives. Connecting bodies, space, and time, I am inspired by the stories in the walls.

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Through the case study of San Francisco, CA’s Mission District, this research project addresses how community-based affordable housing development is operationalized to rehabilitate communities and neighborhoods experiencing effects of gentrification, mass displacement, and cultural dilution. Comparative Pairs Judgements For High-Stakes Practical Assessments, Hendrati Nastiti Jan 2018

Comparative Pairs Judgements For High-Stakes Practical Assessments, Hendrati Nastiti

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Assessment of practical tasks, as opposed to that of theoretical tasks, has been considered to be problematic, mainly because it is usually resource intensive and the scoring is subjective. Most practical tasks need to be assessed on site or involve products that need to be collected, stored, or transported. Moreover, because practical tasks are generally open-ended, and therefore subjective, there is concern over the reliability of the scores. In high-stakes assessment, these problems are even more challenging. There is a need for an assessment method that could overcome these problems. In this study, such a method that will be referred …

Considering Perspectives, Cynthia Epps Jan 2018

Considering Perspectives, Cynthia Epps

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This body of work, Considering Perspectives, explores the ideas of perspective, not only in terms of spatial perspective in art, but also regarding how our vantage point and presumptions affect how we feel about certain subjects. The subjects of my work are spaces or objects often overlooked or considered mundane. When we approach a work of art, we typically do so with a multitude of presuppositions that influence our response. Often, we are not even aware of this. By splicing together multiple perspectives I use my work to create awareness that there may be more than one way not …

In Search Of Communication, Usman O. Oladeinde Jan 2018

In Search Of Communication, Usman O. Oladeinde

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines the work included in Usman Oladeinde’s MFA thesis exhibition. The goal of this thesis paper is to explore major themes such as communication, identity, change, centeredness, landscapes, and language. These paintings present Arabic letter forms transformed into illegible shapes which are painted on landscape backgrounds, often depicting an aesthetic of textual elements receding into space. All these works are inspired by the Qibla, which is represented in the abstract and painted using acrylic media. Occasionally image transfers are mounted on the painted surface.

Visual representations like mine are communicative without forcing the viewer to one specific idea. …

Review Of John James Audubon: The Nature Of The American Woodsman, By Gregory Nobles, Matthew Guzman Jan 2018

Review Of John James Audubon: The Nature Of The American Woodsman, By Gregory Nobles, Matthew Guzman

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

When we think about American ornithology, John James Audubon is often the first name that comes to mind. As evidence to Audubon’s lasting ability to enrapture readers, it bears repeating that an original Double Elephant Folio of Birds of America sold for an astounding $11.5 million in 2010 (2). Yet, for a man who produced such stunning and memorable visual and literary work on the avifauna of North America, some of the important details of his life and origins have remained highly contested. Even though Gregory Nobles’s new biography is not explicitly tied to the study of the Great Plains, …
