The Creation Process Of A Stylized Character In Comparison To A Semi-Realistic Character, Caitlin D. Hall 4464202
The Creation Process Of A Stylized Character In Comparison To A Semi-Realistic Character, Caitlin D. Hall 4464202
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Abstract
I. Introduction
a. Thesis statement: What is the process for modeling a stylized character and how does this differ from a semi-realistic character?
b. Expanded thesis statement: The two styles differ from start to finish in a variety of ways. I believe that semi-realistic characters require more source material when drawing and modeling; however stylized characters require a different level of creativity and artistic ability in creation. Modeling semi-realistic characters will be more dependent on source images while stylized characters may require special attention with non-standard texture, style, etc. Rendering techniques will also differ when it goes to presenting …

Investigating The Effects Of Aqueous Treatment On Selected Sheets From A 17th Century Printed Book With Tideline Staining, Liane Naauao
Art Conservation Master's Projects
The ultimate goal of this project will be to stabilize and treat this copy of the Riflessioni Geografiche2 so that it can be handled and made available as a book model within the department in order to demonstrate the potential for aqueous treatment of historic books. The research component for this project will focus on generating a washing and drying protocol for aqueous treatment of select pages. The present volume, a 17th century book printed in Italy on handmade paper and laced into a paper case, has been previously water damaged and there is tide line staining on a number …
Not Quite Black And White: An Investigation And Treatment Of A Louise Nevelson Collage, Michal Mikesell
Not Quite Black And White: An Investigation And Treatment Of A Louise Nevelson Collage, Michal Mikesell
Art Conservation Master's Projects
A severely damaged collage dated 1974 by the American sculptor, Louise Nevelson, was treated at the SUNY Buffalo State Art Conservation Department with the goal of restoring it to an exhibitable condition. A brief survey of other Nevelson collages from a similar time period in the artist’s career was conducted to inform the treatment process and provide definitions for an exhibitable condition of the treated collage. Material analysis and characterization provided information about the paper, dyes and adhesives present in the collage, which influenced the treatment course and recommendations for long-term care and display. Treatment consisted of separating the collage …
Technical Study And Conservation Treatment Of A 17th Century Panel Painting Attributed To The Circle Of Orazio Gentileschi: Madonna And Child With Two Angels, Julie Ribits
Art Conservation Master's Projects
This specialization project encompasses the technical study and conservation treatment of an early 17th century Italian oil on wood panel painting loosely attributed to the Circle of Orazio Gentileschi: Madonna and Child with Two Angels. This painting previously had only a small amount of related information with regards to provenance and attribution, and the goals of this technical study and treatment were to determine a possible date of manufacture as well as to learn more about the artist’s materials and techniques in the hopes of establishing a better timeline of production. X-Ray Fluorescence, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared …
Retreating From Wax: Investigation And Re-‐Treatment Of A Painting Exhibiting Strange Surface Effects, Anne D. Schaffer
Retreating From Wax: Investigation And Re-‐Treatment Of A Painting Exhibiting Strange Surface Effects, Anne D. Schaffer
Art Conservation Master's Projects
Surface hazing occurring on a recently treated painting called into question the methods used in its treatment, and offered a rare opportunity for research, analysis, and reflection on the field of paintings conservation. Portrait of Millard Fillmore was treated in 1996 and given a rather interventive and innovative treatment that utilized a great deal of wax to re-.‐line the canvas and to fill losses. The canvas was lined to fiberglass and backed with Mylar, and a complex varnish schema was used: three varnishes were applied, all of which were soluble in low polar solvents. Suspecting that any …
The On-Site Analytical Study, Photographic Documentation, And Conservation Treatment Of An Egyptian New Kingdom Child Coffin, Nicole Peters
The On-Site Analytical Study, Photographic Documentation, And Conservation Treatment Of An Egyptian New Kingdom Child Coffin, Nicole Peters
Art Conservation Master's Projects
The caveats associated with archaeological conservation often include the provision of optimal photographic documentation techniques and the presence of analytical equipment and expertise required for in-depth material analyses on site. These tools can influence and inform an intensive conservation treatment in a limited period of time. A team of five conservators and specialists were assembled to aid in the on-site conservation treatment of an Amarna Period decorated child coffin. During which time, complete photographic documentation, wood species identification, plaster composition analysis, X-Ray Fluorescence spectrometry, polarized light microscopy, and conservation treatment commenced. Collaborative research and examination resulted in a holistic and …

Alone In The Crowd: Appropriated Text And Subjectivity In The Work Of Rirkrit Tiravanija, Liz Linden
Alone In The Crowd: Appropriated Text And Subjectivity In The Work Of Rirkrit Tiravanija, Liz Linden
Faculty Publications
The practice of Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija is perhaps the best-known exemplar of relational aesthetics, a distinction first made by Nicholas Bourriaud and affirmed in the writings of many subsequent art critics; but the critical focus on the interactive aspect of his works has tended to rely on utopian modes of community engagement, which ignore Tiravanija's strategic deployment of relational, interactive structures to implicate the viewer, publicly, in problematic political positions. Tiravanija commonly uses appropriation in his artworks as a way of exposing viewer's biases and this paper focuses specifically on his use of appropriated text to explore divided subjectivities …

Categorization Of Hong Kong Modern Males With Regard To Predictors Of Menswear Design Preferences In Terms Of Physical And Socio-Psychological Dimensions, Travis Wang Hei Li, Joe S. Au, Raymond W. Au
Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)
Proportional grading, which offers the closest fit by producing various sizes, is commonly used in sizing systems for mass production today. However, wearers’ socio-psychological concerns are not taken into account during the development of the system, which may churn out ineffective fits. This study provides knowledge of menswear evaluation by taking into account men’s physical and socio-psychological dimensions. This study successfully categorizes modern males according to their preferences of menswear, concerning the predictors of menswear design preferences in physical (i.e. Body Mass Index [BMI]) and psychological dimensions (i.e. menswear functions and menswear involvement). Subjects were divided into three clusters: (1) …
The Past Is Open To The Future: Lithuanian Folk Pottery 1861 - Present, Anthony E. Stellaccio
The Past Is Open To The Future: Lithuanian Folk Pottery 1861 - Present, Anthony E. Stellaccio
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In 2011, following several years of in-country research, I published a book on Lithuanian folk pottery. I enrolled in the Folk Studies master’s program at Western Kentucky University (WKU) in 2014, well after my research and book had been completed. In the present study, I use my newly acquired knowledge of folklore In my previous work to revisit Lithuanian folk pottery.
In my previous work, I had sought to create a picture of “authentic” Lithuanian folk pottery that was confined to the narrow temporal borders of 1861-1918. Here I deconstruct conventional ideas about authenticity, as well as culture and heritage, …

Fiction As A Resource In Participatory Design, Eva Knutz, Tau U. Lenskjold, Thomas Markussen
Fiction As A Resource In Participatory Design, Eva Knutz, Tau U. Lenskjold, Thomas Markussen
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In recent years, co-design research has moved into the heart of business and organisational matters of concern. As a consequence of that fact, the idea of what design is capable of evolves into something that does not only encompass product and service design, but also at the same time changes organisations’ way of doing things – or in other words, it challenges the organisational culture and the mindset of the decision-makers as a way towards the successful embedding of a project within the organisation. This paper investigates how the development of a new service design project together with integrated co-design …
Perception, Meaning And Transmodal Design, Mathias Nordvall, Mattias Arvola
Perception, Meaning And Transmodal Design, Mathias Nordvall, Mattias Arvola
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Our perceptual system allows us to experience and make meaning of the world through different modalities. We can move between feeling, seeing and hearing things and still makes sense of our world. Our cognitive activities are transmodal. In interaction design this means that both our design processes and our users’ interactions are transmodal. We have gained insights into how transitions between modalities, both in the design context and in the users’ interaction context, modulate meaning and experience, by analysing three interactive systems: SimProv, VibEd, and Sightlence. We propose that a transmodal design approach facilitate designers to realize the communicative potential …
Design For Resourceful Ageing: Intervening In The Ethics Of Gerontechnology, Elisa Giaccardi, Lenneke Kuijer, Louis Neven
Design For Resourceful Ageing: Intervening In The Ethics Of Gerontechnology, Elisa Giaccardi, Lenneke Kuijer, Louis Neven
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper discusses an innovative approach to the design of technologies for older people. The approach contains a critique of “gerontechnology” as taking decisions out of the hands of older people and materializing what it means to live healthily and well into “foolproof” designs that easily become inappropriate in the variety of situations in which older people end up using them. The proposed design approach focuses on re-delegating such ethical decisions to the point at which technology is used. It does so by considering technologies as resources that can complement the ageing competences of older people and adapt in a …
A New Variant Of Baccarat For Vip Players, Stewart N. Ethier, Jiyeon Lee
A New Variant Of Baccarat For Vip Players, Stewart N. Ethier, Jiyeon Lee
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
In 2013 baccarat generated over US$41 billion in revenue for the 35 casinos of Macau, of which nearly US$30 billion was attributed to VIP players (high-stakes gamblers). Although the VIP market segment has declined over the past two years, it is still substantial. In this talk we propose a new variant of baccarat that will appeal to and attract VIP players. Its appeal lies in the facts that (a) it has a historical connection to baccarat and (b) it is closer to a fair game than is baccarat.
