Niki De Saint Phalle: The Female Figure And Her Ambiguous Place In Art History, Lucy Kay Riley Apr 2016

Niki De Saint Phalle: The Female Figure And Her Ambiguous Place In Art History, Lucy Kay Riley

Student Publications

Niki de Saint Phalle had a fearless approach in her representation of women and her invitation of audience interaction. Born in 1930, she lived through the years of very male dominated areas of art: Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, and Neo-Dada. Niki de Saint Phalle provided a unique treatment of the female figure through drawing, painting, writing, found object sculpture, large public sculpture, and installation. One of the pieces I will primarily focus on embodies her fascination with audience interaction and the portrayal of the female figure: her controversial and temporary installation of 1966, ‘SHE – a cathedral.' In comparison to …

Maybe The Gate Could Be A Fan, Erin L. Schoenbeck Apr 2016

Maybe The Gate Could Be A Fan, Erin L. Schoenbeck

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

I notice with quiet thrill an individual object or shape such as a railing, an odd pattern in the cement, a handle that does not match the rest, or a surprisingly decorative form intended only for a useful purpose. Choosing a form for its potential function, strange shape or particular color, I filter it through my aesthetic. My mental repetition of the day’s stresses is changed into lighthearted wondering. Maybe that gate I passed could become a beautiful fanned shape, its silhouette in gold and pale green. It could be so tiny its functional life outdoors is transformed into delicate …

“I Would Save You, But My Boobs Keep Getting In The Way”: An Examination Of My Art Through The Lens Of The Heroic Myth And Alternative Comics, Barrett Hollingsworth Apr 2016

“I Would Save You, But My Boobs Keep Getting In The Way”: An Examination Of My Art Through The Lens Of The Heroic Myth And Alternative Comics, Barrett Hollingsworth

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

My artwork challenges the masculine, violent idea of the hero through utilizing the visual language of comic books, as well as autobiographical themes. In this examination of my work, I explore conceptual and visual precedents and relate them back to my own practice throughout. My essay establishes the idea of the contemporary American heroic myth by looking at Joseph Campbell, as well as more contemporary re-examinations and criticisms of his ideas, relating the modern myth to the superhero comic genre. Next, I explore the history of underground comics, specifically feminist autobiographical comics, and relate the works of artists such as …

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

Dewey's conception of the role that experience should play in learning and development has implications for art education. This essay explores Dewey's philosophy of experiential education and the ways in which his theory resonates with artistic experience and practice. It overviews the history of art education in the United States, as well as various arguments for and trends within it; and contains three case studies—Montessori schools, Waldorf schools, and Black Mountain College—whose practices, pedagogies, and underlying philosophies are examined from a Deweyian, experiential perspective. Throughout this investigation, implications for contemporary art education are considered. Dewey's writings and the case studies …

A Borrowed Language, Yvonne Osei Apr 2016

A Borrowed Language, Yvonne Osei

Graduate School of Art Theses

Art has the potency of mediation: bridging human differences, questioning voids in historical trajectories, negotiating spaces of relevance, and most importantly, being signifiers that embody the absent. I speak in a borrowed language, a multilingual visual tongue, inspired by a culmination of Western and African Art modes of practices to create charged platforms for multicultural communication.

My art presents visual portals that allow for intercultural and interracial mingling as issues of colorism, present-day colonialism, gender inequality and the politics of dress are foregrounded for collective deliberation. The essence of the work is often activated and brought to its full potential …

An Artists Enemy: Explorations Into The End Of Artmaking, Dhalia Galdamez Mar 2016

An Artists Enemy: Explorations Into The End Of Artmaking, Dhalia Galdamez

Undergraduate Research Conference

Art has never been a simple thing to do for many people. This paper will touch on the difficulties that people face when making art, and the many reasons that make people stop. Fear of being judged is a very normal human feeling, but it has constantly stopped people from realizing their potential. There was a time when, as children or adolescents we would make things and show them off proudly. We lost that innocence as we began to grown up and this is a very crucial part of why as adults, we let our fear get in the way …

Biotopes And Ecotones: Slippery Images On The Edge Of The French Atlantic, Maura Coughlin Mar 2016

Biotopes And Ecotones: Slippery Images On The Edge Of The French Atlantic, Maura Coughlin

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

Looking outside canonical late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century modernist images of the French Atlantic coast, this essay examines usually discrete fields of landscape painting, botanical visual culture and nascent intertidal natural history to articulate an ecological realism of the ecotone. In a survey of peasant gleaning practices, popular natural science of the shore as well as amateur marine botany, the ecological visual literacy of viewers of this era is speculatively assembled. Works by artists such as Elodie La Villete, Charles Cottet, André Dauchez and Mathurin Méheut who lived long term on the coast are put into dialogue with the pressed …

Lara Salmon, Thesis Statement, Lara Salmon Mar 2016

Lara Salmon, Thesis Statement, Lara Salmon

CGU MFA Theses

My art brings together materials and ideas inspired by personal experience that do not usually exist side by side. My body is the primary mechanism with which I make work, incidentally making me the subject matter of the work. I use my physical self as an instrument to coalesce and transform other materiality. Through live performance and photographic installations I create tension and balance between crude biology and bright, polished formalism. This body of work focuses on Millennial Feminism and the Middle East.

Seeking Solace: Regret, Grief, Anxiety, Rebecca Schroeder

Honors Projects

Seeking Solace: Regret, Grief, Anxiety is a triptych video and artifact piece inspired by the abstract analysis of my dreams. It recognizes worries held within my subconscious and brings them to life through graphic design, photography, and video. The process of creating provides a new perspective of looking at both art and occupational therapy as methods of solving emotional distress.

I have recorded over 80 of my dreams in the past year. In these dreams, regret, grief, and anxiety are common themes. These themes are represented in three triptychs that cycle through past, present, and future problems. The cycling of …

Freedom Of Speech: China And The Case Of Ai Weiwei, Nali Asamoah Mar 2016

Freedom Of Speech: China And The Case Of Ai Weiwei, Nali Asamoah

2016 Honors Council of the Illinois Region Papers

The freedom of speech and specifically the power and authority to speak out against one's government is a concept that is mostly adapted and encouraged by western nations due to the effects of movements like the Enlightenment and the overall history of the U.S. This ability to express and share ideals, and to critically assess can create in the masses a mindset that is not complacent, but allows everyone a voice in bringing about changes that they see fit. In countries like China, individual freedoms are outlined in the People's Republic of China's constitution, which states in Article 35: "Citizens …
