Choreography Of Surface Materiality From Nature, Culture, And Time, Yandi Andri Yatmo, Paramita Atmodiwirjo, Ghofar Rozaq Nazila

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper proposes the emergence of surface materiality of architecture from nature, culture and time. The emergence of surface from the choreography of nature, culture and time offers an understanding of surface materiality beyond the common, modern building materiality. A case of design research project in the context of a natural site with challenging topography illustrates the process of generating various forms of architectural surfaces from the elements of nature and culture, articulated with the elements of time. The process of choreographing the elements of nature, culture and time becomes more important than just the physical crafting or constructing of …

Exploring The Relationship Between Material And Textile Structure In Creating Changing Textile Expressions, Riikka Talman Nov 2015

Exploring The Relationship Between Material And Textile Structure In Creating Changing Textile Expressions, Riikka Talman

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper explores the relationship between potentially dynamic materials and textile structures for designing textiles with inherent changing qualities. Textiles are usually designed to retain their appearance for as long as possible. Yet all textiles wear out and change over time, both physically and aesthetically. This means the life spans of textile object and the material it is made from will not necessarily be equal. The dynamic changeable qualities in textiles could instead be enhanced by using the potentially dynamic, changing qualities inherent to materials and combining them with textile structures. Through contextualisation and design examples, this paper discusses the …

Materials, Time And Emotion: How Materials Change In Time?, Eline Nobels, Francesca Ostuzzi, Marinella Levi, Valentina Rognoli, Jan Detand

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

During their lifecycle, objects shift from their initial state of perfection, in which they are conceived by designers and industrial production, and approach an imperfect status. This is shown by changes that impact shape, surface and material properties, due to usage and time. In this paper we focus on the passage of time and its consequences. For some materials ageing is negatively addressed as decaying, for other ones it may have a positive effect to be defined as evolution or maturation. What are the factors that lead to a positive or a negative perception of ageing objects? In other words, …

Processes Of Artefact Creation In The Hybrid-Reality Engaging With Materials Through Material Oxymorons, Laura Ferrarello, William Fairbrother Nov 2015

Processes Of Artefact Creation In The Hybrid-Reality Engaging With Materials Through Material Oxymorons, Laura Ferrarello, William Fairbrother

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Yet the nature of all these things must of course be physical since otherwise they could not impress our senses —for impression means touch, and touch means the touch of bodies. Lucrezio, "De Rerum Natura" The materiality of things represents the connection between our bodies and the physical world. However, in recent years, with the overlay of a new digital reality onto the existing physical one, materiality has extended its domain of existence into the virtual world through haptic technologies. The sense of touch is no longer restricted to a physical contact with any kind of "thing" existing in our …

Service Prototyping And Organizational Transformation: Playing With The Potential Problems And Solutions, Jaana HyväRinen, Tuuli MattelmäKi Nov 2015

Service Prototyping And Organizational Transformation: Playing With The Potential Problems And Solutions, Jaana HyväRinen, Tuuli MattelmäKi

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

The purpose of this paper is to explore small-scale service prototyping as a tool and a process for developing and implementing service concepts and initiating transformation in the involved public service organization(s) simultaneously. The paper describes a municipality initiated service design case and reflects on the prototyping process and findings. The paper focuses on the use of service prototyping in developing ‘social emergency’ services for families with children. The case illustrates how service prototyping and tangible prototype may establish a connection between front-stage and back-stage transformation both at operational and strategic levels. The findings explicate how the collaborative service prototyping …

Authentically African : Arts And The Transnational Politics Of Congolese Culture, Sarah Van Beurden Nov 2015

Authentically African : Arts And The Transnational Politics Of Congolese Culture, Sarah Van Beurden

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Together, the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium, and the Institut des Musées Nationaux du Zaire (IMNZ) in the Congo have defined and marketed Congolese art and culture. In Authentically African, Sarah Van Beurden traces the relationship between the possession, definition, and display of art and the construction of cultural authenticity and political legitimacy from the late colonial until the postcolonial era. Her study of the interconnected histories of these two institutions is the first history of an art museum in Africa, and the only work of its kind in English.
Drawing on Flemish-language sources other scholars have …

Art Education In My Backyard: Creative Placemaking On An Urban Farm, Jodi Kushins

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

An art educator describes how she used her knowledge and experience of artistic and educational initiatives that forefront collective activity in real world settings to transform her backyard into an urban farm with the help of friends and neighbors. She combines an autoethnographic account of her experiences, including original photographs, with research on conceptual artists, participatory culture, and creative placemaking to position her work as participatory environmental art education. The paper is organized around the major steps one undertakes in planting a garden – siting, amending, seeding, tending, and harvesting - to draw parallels between the processes of maintaining a …

Other-Than-Ego Consciousness: Approaching The “Spiritual” In Secular Art Education, Nico Roenpagel Nov 2015

Other-Than-Ego Consciousness: Approaching The “Spiritual” In Secular Art Education, Nico Roenpagel

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

Alternative worldviews bring forth alternative visions of education. This article sheds light on one contemporary approach to a spiritual worldview and its implications for secular art education. It proposes that high school visual art is a particularly conducive environment to engaging teenagers with existential and spiritual questions. An approach to spirituality grounded in a worldview of “profound interconnectedness” and “other-than-ego consciousness,” rather than religious systems, offers a timely basis for renegotiating the spiritual in secular art education settings. Through five concepts, the article bridges broader discussions on spirituality with concrete learning and teaching in the art classroom. For example, it …

Inverse Inclusion: A Model For Preservice Art Teacher Training, Angela M. La Porte Nov 2015

Inverse Inclusion: A Model For Preservice Art Teacher Training, Angela M. La Porte

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

A university community-based intercession course offers preservice art teachers a unique opportunity to experience inverse inclusion in an art class for special needs adults. Inverse inclusion allows preservice teachers to become students working side-by-side with an equal or greater number of special needs learners, and also places them in occasional roles as teacher, teacher’s assistant, and videographer. Their observations and interactions within these roles provide preservice teachers with perceptive insights and perspectives about teaching, and nurture a better understanding of special needs students’ personal interests and abilities. Applying, reflecting upon, and adapting open-ended art curriculum theory and practice from multiple …

Misunderstandings And Consequences Of Labeling Artists As Self-Taught, Kristin Congdon Nov 2015

Misunderstandings And Consequences Of Labeling Artists As Self-Taught, Kristin Congdon

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

I have championed artists who have been invisible and underrepresented for decades. Sometimes these artists have been labeled by race or ethnicity and many of them have fallen into the categories of folk and self-taught. When writing about artists who have fallen into one of these categories, I have often tried to avoid labeling them, hoping to have them viewed simply (and complexly) as artists worthy of (high) art consideration. However, I have found that sometimes labeling has been necessary and even useful. Labeling helps a writer, curator, scholar, educator, or arts facilitator focus on a particular cultural group, worldview, …

Poems For Artizein, Sally A. Gradle Nov 2015

Poems For Artizein, Sally A. Gradle

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This is a collection of seven poems all of which have to do with being a teacher or an observer of artistic growth in children, one's self, or the differently abled. I view the teaching of art as something of a spiritual quest for greater understanding of the self and the world. I hope to have conveyed a bit of the essence of what it means to unfold in this regard.

The Half-Life & After-Life Of New Media, Nancy Austin Nov 2015

The Half-Life & After-Life Of New Media, Nancy Austin

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

It is fitting to think of the half-life of new media using the time-based metaphor of radioactive decay. As a metaphor, an object’s half-life can be a useful way to talk about the potent technological modernity of new media and, like Walter Benjamin’s well-known notion of the aura, call attention to an object’s performativity. However, Benjamin’s aura remains a constant reminder of irrevocable originality whereas remarking on half-life references a quality that changes over time. But what happens after the rhetorical impact of being new has run its course? What is the life expectancy of once-new media and what of …

Discover Joyce's Dublin By Reading And Running, Barry Sheehan Nov 2015

Discover Joyce's Dublin By Reading And Running, Barry Sheehan

Academic Articles

James Joyce told his friend Frank Budgen. “‘I want’ said Joyce, as we were walking down the Universitätstrasse, ‘to give a picture of Dublin so complete that if the city one day suddenly disappeared from the earth it could be reconstructed out of my book.’” (Budgen, 1960, p.67, 68).

This research looks at the relevance of Dublin to Joyce’s writings and to the relevance of Joyce’s writings to Dublin. It is concerned with the virtual Dublin of Joyce’s writings, the physical manifestation of Dublin over time, and the relationships between them.

Numerous scholars read and analyse the writings of Joyce …

A Proposal, David Detrich

About the Project

“In the footsteps of Nina Katchadourian”

Nina Katchadourian -‐ “Sorted Books”

The Sorted Books project began in 1993; and is ongoing. The project has taken place in many different places over the years, ranging from private homes to specialized public book collections. The process is the same in every case: culling through a collection of books, pulling particular titles, and eventually grouping the books into clusters so that the titles can be read in sequence, from top to bottom. The final results are shown either as photographs of the book clusters or as the actual stacks themselves, shown on the …

Student Projects

This book stack has the potential to be expanded into a series illustrating a fictional journey. Utilizing the spines of both non-fiction, reference, and fiction books to construct this narrative would highlight the power of the written form to invoke the journeys of research and the imagination. Bringing these seemingly disparate sections of the library together also showcases the breadth of resources available, consolidating them into an legible narrative.

Location

These stacks would be situated in common areas around the library. The stacks would be housed in simple wooden boxes to highlight their presence.

Designing Work: A Study Of Collaboration And Concentration In Open-Plan Offices, John Walsh Nov 2015

Designing Work: A Study Of Collaboration And Concentration In Open-Plan Offices, John Walsh

Academic Articles

This article looks at the design of open-plan offices, particularly in relation to the impact of spatial design on different work-modes. It examines the history of the open-plan office, looking at how the open-plan workplace has evolved. It reports the findings of a survey on office design of 150 office workers across multiple industry sectors, job types and age categories. Finally, assuming there will not be a return en masse to the traditional, space hungry, cellular office for most knowledge workers this article considers what have we learned so far, and how spaces can be designed to support different work-modes, …
