Artistic Practice And Domestic Experience In New Zealand, Alexis Ostraff, Gary Barton
Artistic Practice And Domestic Experience In New Zealand, Alexis Ostraff, Gary Barton
Journal of Undergraduate Research
For a while now I’ve been interested in the role that food plays in the interaction between individuals and groups of people. In my own home growing up I learned to love food and the gatherings that food facilitated, especially family meal-times. I more recently developed the desire to look further into how food affects our lives. For my ORCA project I wanted to observe interactions surrounding food in homes different from my own. I was curious about cultural similarities and differences, and wondered what I could learn in others homes that would influence my artwork as well as my …

Adriaen Van De Venne’S Skating Owls (1620-1660), Sarah James Dyer, Martha Peacock
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Although some scholars think that Skating Owls (1620-1660) by Adriaen van de Venne (Fig. 1) is solely a lighthearted piece, I have found that through his use of iconographic imagery and well-known proverbs, van de Venne was able to generate a work of art intended to portray a moralizing message condemning the vice of adultery and warning the male audience about the dangers of cunning women. It was imperative for my thesis to see the artwork in person to conduct further research and gain a greater knowledge about the artwork’s purpose. Very little is known or has been published on …

In Argentina, many of the artists outside of the capitol are not studied despite how important they might be to the history of Argentina. I was once passing through a town in La Pampa, and I walked into a local museum. On a temporary display, I saw beautiful photographs taken from the 1920s and later. As a student of art history, I was intrigued by the works and wanted to know more about the photographer. I asked the lady at the museum if there was a pamphlet or book about the artist that I could purchase to learn more about …

Visual Research Of Delacroix, Drew Rane, Peter Everett
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The paintings of Eugene Delacroix show an exception power and emotion. Delacroix uses the human figure and color in order to express emotion. There continues to be an important place for the use of representation of the human figure in contemporary art. This is through the expressive quality that avails itself through use of the figure. Though the widespread popularity of the human figure in art waxes and wanes there continues to be a need filled by the figure. The representation varies widely from traditional academic accurate representation to an abstracted form to an even more distanced use with contemporary …

Another Look: A Rephotographic Survey Of Giovanni Paolo Panini’S Works, Kendra Harris, James Swensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Giovanni Paolo Panini was a famous painter during the 18th century, and is mainly known as a vedutisti, or view painter. He is notable for his paintings of Rome, which often incorporated fantastical landscapes of the most renowned sites of the city.1 The purpose of this project was to recreate sixteen of Panini’s most famous works of art through photography, capturing the modern appearance of some of the most famous sites in Rome. By completing this research project, I have been able to document the ever-changing cityscape of Rome and continue Panini’s work of capturing the art and architecture of …

Paratextual aids to reading in medieval codex books, printed codex books, and Kindle ebooks are compared. Medieval scribes designed paratextual elements that enhanced diverse reading practices, from lectio divina to scholarly textual study. Printers adopted and standardized many elements of paratext, and contemporary readers depend on these elements to navigate printed books. Because familiar paratextual aids to reading are less visible in Kindle ebooks, readers find those ebooks harder to navigate. Development of effective ebook paratext must take into account the needs and practices of readers.

Images Of Suffering: An Investigation Of Francisco Goya's 'Disasters Of War' And William Blake's 'Illustrations For The Book Of Job', Chris Christenson
Library Research Prize Student Works
Francisco de Goya and William Blake, who we regard today as two of the greatest artists of the Romantic era, each produced a provocative set of engravings towards the end of his life. Goya's Los Desastres de la Guerra [The Disasters of War] and Blake's Illustrations for the Book of Job are both contemplations on human suffering, specifically unjust suffering, and our response to it. When placed in dialogue with one another, these sets of engravings unearth new dimensions in their interpretation and consequently in our own thinking about suffering. This paper will explore suffering and response through four themes …

I believe quality design does not always have to be expensive. Using things we currently have and creating something else with it is a great way to be sustainable. Not only are you saving money by re-using and sprucing up old items but you are also creating a unique piece that no one else has! Why buy new when you can re-use?
Also pleasing clients is a tough job but my passion for interior design makes me want to achieve the vision that the clients have and create a space of their dreams by doing it with passion or not …

Even a simplest design has its own character. It does not matter how sophisticated a design is. The matter is your character can be expressed through that design style. I believe the purpose of interior designer is creating a place that reflects client’s personality and making sure to protect their health, safety and welfare.

Interior design is not only a career it is also my passion. I have always had a passion for design especially when it comes to residential spaces. While there are many different rooms in a home I am always drawn to living rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens. Each room is like a different piece of a puzzle, they can all have their own personality, but still all fit together to create a wonderful home.

I believe it is human nature to want to change the world, to leave your mark. An interior designer has many options to do this through codes, sustainability, and collectively changing the way humans interact in a space. While the aesthetics and functionality of a space are the main goals of a design there are many opportunities to improve on a way of life and this is what I find most important.

My design philosophy is to create an area that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but functional. Whether this is residential or commercial, I want you to feel comfortable about your surroundings. I want you to be able to enjoy the environment around you and feel right at home. This can be with commercial design also. I do not want someone to feel as if they are in a hospital. White walls feel institutional. I want to design places that make you feel at ease and comfortable, even if it is a place you do not necessarily want to be, such …

Most people consider Interior Design to be a luxury and something that only the wealthy and privileged can afford. However, this is not the case; anyone with any budget can have a space that they are proud to call their own. While the wealthy do have the ability to pay to furnish a room without regard to cost, which is not a criteria that alone determines whether or not you have a wonderful space. A more economical family may have to be more prudent with their furnishings purchases, but they still have the right to a beautiful, enjoyable, comfortable home. …

Philosophy
Embracing the elements of design with the elements of nature.
Healthy interiors must draw inspiration from nature through its light, color, and sustainability; creating therapeutic spaces for all users. It is crucial to bridge the gap between all fields of design and cultures, bringing the innovations of healthy interiors to our homes, businesses, hospitals, and all aspects of the design process.

Altared Object, Erin Jameson Brown
Altared Object, Erin Jameson Brown
Theses
The thesis exhibition Altared Object seeks to undermine and expose the established religious and patriarchal practices that cause harm to women in contemporary society. In my art, I attempt to expose the latent sexist oppression that exists in society and in the church; how fundamental and foundational it is to our societal norms; and how this oppression is still widely accepted and adhered to, but not necessarily acknowledged today. Through the use of massproduced objects which I have purchased from thrift stores or found online, seemingly innocuous objects will be repurposed through a process of appropriation and reintroduced in a …

Theses
This thesis and accompanying exhibition seeks to investigate through visualization the role of individual units within a system through personal association with those individual units. The art forms in the exhibition are artifacts of the pseudo-scientific process that I have developed. Through scientific research and interpretations of personal experiences, the process seeks to explore system construction, functionality and degree of success regarding each. The role of the individual unit within systems and the manner in which it exercises a potent influence is elucidated. As a consequence, the exhibition provides self-reflective information and an environment for viewers to consider the effects …

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience
This composition traces the history of Cuban-American cultural identity formation through the lens of music and dance. As the author explains, Cuban immigrants cultivated a rich music and dance culture in New York City by creating a series of Latin and Afro-Cuban music genres and dances that brought diverse groups of people together. As a Vietnamese-American woman, Tran sees several connections between her family’s Vietnamese heritage and the cultural histories of Cubans who came to the United States as refugees seeking asylum from political oppression. As a first-generation college student, Tran believes it is important to share this composition as …

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience
"A Tres Pasos de la Muerte" tells the story of a son of Mexican immigrants and his search for his roots. Here, Temblador attempts to communicate a bicultural experience through the frame of border literature (Literatura Fronteriza) born out of the intersection between Mexican and American culture.

Applications For Dummies, Carla M. Sanchez
First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience
This poem discusses the overwhelming pressure that is put on students to justify their right to be admitted into universities or to receive scholarships based on their extracurricular activities. Many working-class, first-generation college students are unable to participate in organizations and programs that offer students a more well-rounded college experience. This can lead first-gen students, like the author, to feel isolated, inadequate, or illegitimate. "Applications for Dummies" expresses Sanchez's incessant fear that she will never be able to compete with other students who were given the opportunity to build more worldly resumes, despite her strong academic commitment and intellectual potential.

It's Not Just A Leave, Genesis L. Montalvo
First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience
In this piece, the author sets out to explore the first-generation college identity through a gothic lens. In the early stages of this project, Montalvo had considered doing research on narratives from other first-gen college students as a way to trace the uncanny and the abject in their experiences. However, as she began reflecting on her own personal history, she realized that in a matter of only two years she had already experienced moments of distance, uncanniness, and confusion, which are recorded here. In presenting these installments in non-chronological order, Montalvo intends to insert a gothic element of disorder, which …

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience
This poem illustrates the struggle of an undergraduate first-generation college student who knew little about the first-gen identity or the experiences she would encounter until she became a First To Go Scholar at Loyola Marymount University. The poet represents the First To Go Program as a flashlight that has helped her to navigate a once dark and unfamiliar environment.
