Facebook | Panopticon: An Analysis Of Facebook And Its Parallels To The Foucaultian Panopticon, Stephanie A. Fast
Honors Theses
A panopticon—the ideal mechanism for surveillance and control—has become embedded in our smartphones and our web browsers. It now pervades the fabric of approximately 890 million daily lives. It is called Facebook. This platform, on which users document their own lives in front of an audience while simultaneously surveilling the lives of their “friends,” shares startling similarities to a prison model, the Panopticon, designed in the late eighteenth-century by Jeremy Bentham, and analyzed by French philosopher, Michel Foucault. Through an analysis of Facebook’s structure and function, parallels will be suggested between the structure of Facebook and the structure of the …

How Combining Constructivism And Open Source Code Can Open New Realms For Interactive Sculpture, Janell Angela Amely
How Combining Constructivism And Open Source Code Can Open New Realms For Interactive Sculpture, Janell Angela Amely
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
This paper establishes a philosophical link between Constructivism, open source code practices, and interactive artworks. Although the traditional way to teach art can be considered highly constructivist in nature, there are very few published papers that provide a direct link. My motivation for writing this paper is to provide that direct link, as well as to point out how open source code practices can be though of with a constructivist viewpoint by artists. I first describe and define Constructivism, open source code, and interactive sculpture. Then using constructivist terms and ideas I describe the design and programming with open source …
Common Threads: An Examination Of Common Threads Of Design Value, Woven Together By Designers To Achieve Elevated Products Across Disciplines, Laura Taylor
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Though what defines good design is subject to personal opinion, some objectivity of good design in existing products is mutually and consistently recognized by design professionals, the business sector, and the consumer public. Despite the complexity of defining good design, there clearly exist measurable, objective, common threads of design value which create elevated designs, across disciplines, which are identifiable and accepted by those within and beyond design professions.
By first examining over 100 contemporary product designs and identifying measurable, objective commonalities which elevate them, this thesis then individually examines and outlines ten categories of common design values. Once these design …

Experimental Boss Design And Testing, Joseph P. Mistretta
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Over the years, gaming has developed rapidly from simple pixel-based experiences to fully blown three-dimensional worlds. As developing technologies improve, so does the complexity and flexibility of what can be created. Encounters, along with all aspects of any gaming experience, have evolved along with the technologies that create them. These intense combat instances, often times referred to as “bosses”, represent a chance for the developer to challenge player skill, cooperation, and coordination. In addition to being major challenges, encounters also allow players to feel a sense of progression as they learn and adapt to mechanics incorporated within an encounter’s design. …
Power To The People: A Comprehensive Look At Crowdsourcing Initiatives In Cultural Institutions, Danielle Pace
Power To The People: A Comprehensive Look At Crowdsourcing Initiatives In Cultural Institutions, Danielle Pace
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Today, crowdsourcing has become an integrative approach to completing projects using the help of the general populous. These projects aid museum staff by processing large quantities of data, which otherwise could not be completed due to time and/or staff restraints. Through crowdsourcing, cultural institutions have the ability to outsource these tasks to volunteers, who can complete them at much faster rates. Although staff members are needed to validate and supervise these projects, crowdsourcing remains a useful tool in increasing public interactions and project efficiency.
This thesis presents a thorough outline of what crowdsourcing is, how it is being utilized, and …

Presence-At-Hand, Eric Lyle Schultz
Graduate School of Art Theses
Abstract
The writing that follows is intended to provide a theoretical framework for the motives behind my practice. The primary concerns addressed are the reception, transmission, and physical shape of knowledge. I will discuss a human condition that exists as a byproduct of both the legacy of representation as well as the innate biology of the brain. I will argue that as a society we are governed by the residue of an extreme logic, and that this condition places severe margins on our potential for creative solutions. I will propose that our ability to create meaning is stifled by the …
Word Muscles, Jimena O. Gracia
Word Muscles, Jimena O. Gracia
Undergraduate Theses—Unrestricted
Through video performance, I question whether the tangible expressive significance of written language is not just in the record of it, but in the experience of writing as well. The ability to contract and relax is a property of the muscles in bodies as well as in language. In response to this idea of the contractile nature of the body, I link writing to dancing by pairing the record of one with the process of the other. In doing so, I set up a parallel between the malleable nature of the body – which allows for the proximity between graceful …
Breaching, Margaux Crump
Breaching, Margaux Crump
Graduate School of Art Theses
I make objects that behave like bodies—graceful hybrids that are effortlessly cultural and natural, masculine and feminine, plant and animal. Shifting and slipping between unfixed identities, they exist as multiplicities. When these bodies touch, power and pleasure are fluidly exchanged. However, power is not structured here as a binary and pleasure is not finite; both have the potential to flow between bodies, blurring boundaries and rendering individuality delicate.
My work is primarily rooted in the relationship between desire, intimacy, and control, with the body acting as a site of power play. This body may be plant, animal, sculpture, or material. …

Methodologies Of The Creatively Maladjusted, Michael A. Williams
Graduate School of Art Theses
As intellectuals, artists must actively challenge societal power structures and the accepted way of thinking. Unless authority is questioned and discussed by the masses, the perception of power can segue almost seamlessly into actual power. It is the responsibility of the artist to disrupt these ingrained social systems through the work they create. According to Pablo Helguera, there are two different kinds of socially engaged artwork: the symbolic and the actual. While symbolic artwork focuses more on poetics and connecting with the audience, actual artwork emphasizes the functionality and applicable nature of the art. It is vitally important to blend …

A Characterization Of Amarantha, Robert Malsberry

Any attempt to characterize the heroine, Arnarantha, must first reveal her environment. One of the most backward sections in North Carolina is the setting, and the reader is made vividly aware of this' typical "Tobacco Road" backdrop. Amarantha is a farm girl-used to farm life and used to handling animals. The simplification of her name to the harsh and ugly "Mare" fully illustrates the crudeness and coarseness she is exposed to from birth. The author emphasizes Amarantha's faulty speech traits, but the reader feels no contempt for her-s-only pity for her lack of a normal educational background. Along with the …

IDLER PAUSED to brush the beads of sweat, worry, from his forehead. He watched as the droplets fell to the dusty road of Life, landing in the footprint of the traveler several yards ahead of him. He studied the footprints, concluding that they were made by a person in great haste. This realization caused a cloud of gloom to pass over Idler's face, for he hated to see anyone in such a predicament. No person in this world can be enjoying himself when he has imbibed that destructive potion, Hurry, as this poor soul has evidently done, he decided...

Think, if you will, what talent might have been given to the world if little Johnnie had had a large unabridged dictionary. With such an aid he might have been able to reach the piano keys. But no, his family had no such helpful device. Alas, he had no way to reach those beautifully noisy keys, and instead of becoming a great, although underpaid, musician, he had to lay bricks and amass great wealth in later life.

ANYONE WHO has been unfortunate enough to venture into one of our glacier-cooled motion picture houses recently has no doubt been forced to the conclusion that our "movies" have not only hit rock bottom, but that they are attempting to burrow through it. The average person, sick unto death of psychiatrist's couches, mother fixations, and planned crimes, may take one of two paths: He may give up movies altogether, or he may turn to foreign pictures and thereby find a rewarding experience free from Betty Grable's legs and Alan Ladd's torso. What is wrong with the American movies? Predominantly three …

ANYONE OF COLLEGE age should be able to write a lengthy essay on irrational behavior, The period of attendance in high school seems to be the most irrational period of life. This is a time when we substitute impulsive behavior for rational action. Adults try to help us reason things out, but we do not like to be reasonable because it spoils our fun and excitement. From this period of adjustment in my life one irrational experience stands uppermost in my mind...
