Endogenous, Rachele Romano Jun 2015

Endogenous, Rachele Romano

Art Journal

In my work I explore the exterior parts and interior sensations of the body, using both recognizable and imaginative abstract elements. Through this work I address issues affecting the body, specifically physical, sexual and verbal abuse. I’m interested in moments of trauma and their effects on the body. In my paintings I raise the questions: what goes on in the body? What could go on inside the body? What happens in the mind of person during a time of fear, and how does the body react to that? What would this look like on a canvas? My work explores the …

Printed Books Versus Digital Books, Mikayla Nicole Byars Jun 2015

Printed Books Versus Digital Books, Mikayla Nicole Byars

Graphic Communication

The purpose of this study was to determine whether college aged students prefer to read from printed books or e-books when reading for pleasure and for school. Many factors go into the decision of which platform readers choose to read from such as cost, portability, durability, reading conditions, and lifetime. It is valuable to determine what drives consumers to be making these choices.

Multiples In Late Modern Sculpture: Influences Within And Beyond Daniel Spoerri’S 1959 Edition Mat, Leda Cempellin Jun 2015

Multiples In Late Modern Sculpture: Influences Within And Beyond Daniel Spoerri’S 1959 Edition Mat, Leda Cempellin

School of Design Faculty Publications

The first Edition mat was founded by Daniel Spoerri in 1959 and recreated in collaboration with Karl Gerstner in 1964 and 1965, with a special Edition mat mot the same year. Consisting of sculptures that change optically, electrically, or through the audience’s physical interventions, this series brought in an innovative idea of multiplication through movement. The potential of mat sculptures for configuration changes within the continuity of their structure in space sets them apart from serial twodimensional works, where any change in the gestalt requires the production of a new copy. This paper reconstructs the genesis of the Edition mat …

A group of RIT Mechanical Engineering students spent the 2014-2015 academic year in their senior design class collaborating with the RIT Cary Graphic Arts Collection to design and fabricate a 21st century hand-operated platen press.

The press that was designed during this engineering exercise met several requirements:

  • be under 30 lbs
  • fit in a 24 inch square table top space
  • be manufactured with a majority of components which could be purchased from a standard parts supplier
  • be able to print with commonly manufactured ink rollers, ink, letterpress chases, spacing and furniture
  • the platen and packing had to be adjustable to …

Curating Massive Media, Dave Colangelo Jun 2015

Curating Massive Media, Dave Colangelo

School of Film Faculty Publications and Presentations

The European Union’s media art initiative Connecting Cities and New York-based Streaming Museum are two recent examples of curatorial models that operate through large, networked, digital displays. This growing exhibition category combines expressive media architecture and telecommunication elements to engage ‘trans-local’ sites and diverse publics in complex media spaces. By investigating the confluence of exhibition making, public art and urban experience, this article explores the relationship between spectacle and criticality with respect to shifting notions of space, identity and ‘the common’.

Note: At the time of writing, Dave Colangelo was affiliated with Ryerson University.

Design Thinking And The Internal: A Case Study, Meredith James Jun 2015

Design Thinking And The Internal: A Case Study, Meredith James

Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design Faculty Publications and Presentations

‘Design Thinking’ commonly refers to a set of cognitive activities one engages in during a design process. These activities are regularly applied by design practitioners to external problems – often in the role of mediation between ourselves and our environments, objects, and information (‘material culture’). A designer’s efforts are intended to solve the problems of others, but this externalization is only one half of the equation. Rarely is such energy and focus turned inwards mastering the self first. Students from ART 111: Design Thinking (fall 2014 and winter 2015) at Portland State University investigated how specific tactics and tools of …

Graduation Announcements & Save The Date Cards For Asia Croson Photography, Olivia Goree

Graphic Communication

The purpose of this study was to create graduation announcements cards to serve as a value added service for Asia Croson Photography. Research was conducted on the recent growth of photography, the difficulty of starting a photography business, and Asia’s competitors in the area. The current trends in graduation announcements among college females was also researched before designs were made. Once designs were brainstormed and executed, approval was received from Asia Croson and files were sent to her to personalize for her clients. Clients were also sent surveys asking them what card designs they were interested in purchasing and why …

Individual Differences In Digital Badging: Do Learner Characteristics Matter?, Joey R. Fanfarelli, Thomas Rudy Mcdaniel Jun 2015

Individual Differences In Digital Badging: Do Learner Characteristics Matter?, Joey R. Fanfarelli, Thomas Rudy Mcdaniel

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Badge use has rapidly expanded in recent years and has benefited a variety of applications. However, a large portion of the research has applied a binary useful or not useful approach to badging. Few studies examine the characteristics of the user and the impact of those characteristics on the effectiveness of the badging system. This study takes preliminary steps toward that cause, examining the effectiveness of a badging system across two web-based university courses in relation to the individual differences of the learners. Individual differences are examined through the lens of Long-Dziuban reactive behavior types and traits. Results revealed differences …

Light Sensitive, Andrew Thompson Jun 2015

Light Sensitive, Andrew Thompson

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

I am an excremental artist. I do not mean an artist who works with feces or is interested in manure but one whose artwork is expelled through the results of process. As a photographer, I am not as interested in indexing a location, a person or a moment as I am dissolving the structure of photography through the manipulation of photographic materials. I typically photograph landscapes that catch my attention for a myriad of reasons. The commonality between these images is anonymity of place. Hints of location are always present but never accentuated, instead their purpose is akin to a …

Practices In Designing A Scholarly Journal And Its Style Guide, Monique Martinez Jun 2015

Practices In Designing A Scholarly Journal And Its Style Guide, Monique Martinez

Graphic Communication

The purpose of this project was to create a method for designing a scholarly journal by managing all design and print aspects of a Volume II, student produced, journal. The journal, Paideia, included student research papers and alumni successes in the workplace from California Polytechnic State University’s Political Science Department. Responsibilities included inserting text and photos from the Political Science committee, and making a cohesive layout and design with all elements given. Since a new volume of the journal will be assembled each year, a style guide was also produced alongside the journal, for future students to refer to when …

Visualizing Population Density Based On Wifi Router Location And Network Usage, Tyler Deitz Jun 2015

Visualizing Population Density Based On Wifi Router Location And Network Usage, Tyler Deitz

Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies

This research paper introduces a prototype of a feature for Robert E. Kennedy’s maps web application. The feature visualizes population density based off wifi router location and network usage within the building. The significance of the feature is noted by documenting the library’s transition into a hub for student life and campus culture, which increases the space’s occupancy and visitor retention for a longer time. The feature is based off a Voronoi diagram map distribution which strongly affects its technical and visual implementation. The end product is user tested by Cal Poly students and received a 93.5% satisfaction rate.

The Hero's Journey, Alan Van Fleet Jun 2015

The Hero's Journey, Alan Van Fleet

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

My ongoing series of assemblages are an expression my modern mythology through the juxtaposition of esoteric symbols and my collection of beloved action figures. Though myth is founded in partial truths and allegories, it has the unique capability to speak about our relationships to one another and the universe. My artwork conceives of anime, comics, and videos games as part of our contemporary mythology.

Inspired by a fusion of pop culture and spirituality, I also draw on the magical properties attributed to flowers, gemstones and other materials to create shrines, altars, and other objects. Juxtaposing these properties, found in my …

Performing Binaries, Humberto Reynoso Jun 2015

Performing Binaries, Humberto Reynoso

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

I take a critical view of sociopolitical and cultural issues dealing with homoeroticism andgay politics. I explore gender theories in order to further understand what it means to bemasculine or feminine and how it affects my placement in society. I use art as a tool forexpressing sexual freedom while questioning traditional sexual identity. I'm interested in exploring ideas of the oppressor and the oppressed, and how power becomes an inevitable force (in every society) that creates a hierarchy, consequently establishing control. But what is power? According to various definitions, power is an entity that possesses and or exercises authority or …

Transmutation: One Thing Becoming Another, Price Hall Jun 2015

Transmutation: One Thing Becoming Another, Price Hall

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

My art emerges from decades of the experience of building myself, sensitively aware of accumulated experience and the weight of accrued memory. Responding to this life I so deeply appreciate the longer I live, as sculptor, painter and poet, I merge these individual aesthetic observations into a layered work of many reads. Offering poetic observation as a visual sensation beyond the ears’ hearing carried on a field of color connects at some interior emotional level which is absent or very different in the uniformity of type. Time is present in my current work. “Corrugations”, not only in the poetic images …

The Self Reconfigured, Soe Yu Nwe May 2015

The Self Reconfigured, Soe Yu Nwe

Masters Theses

In my work, I explore different ways of narrating my experience of alienation, confusion, pain, and psychological confinement as a cultural outsider. I seek to create narrative spaces that explore the spatial relationships between the fragmented and dislocated self with the surrounding environment along with a yearning for connection. I convey these experiences through the use of symbols (house, shrine, vessel, and snake) as metaphors for the self. As a third generation Chinese immigrant in Myanmar, I look back to Buddhist and Animistic practices in my native country, in addition to Chinese cultural practices, for inspiration in my work. The …

Speculative Politics -Fictionalized Spectacle, Prin Limphongpand May 2015

Speculative Politics -Fictionalized Spectacle, Prin Limphongpand

Masters Theses

Speculative Politics—Fictionalized Spectacle posits an alternate model for design practice. Borrowing from the genre of science fiction, this design approach activates consideration of possible realities and cultural forms. It raises questions and invents problems instead of solving them. By imagining technologies, policies, laws, and conditions that do not yet exist, design becomes an agent of investigation to highlight current and future social, cultural, and political conditions.

The projects within this thesis reconsider our present situations through methods of speculative documentation. The act of documentation becomes a process of manipulating notions of truth to render fictions from reality. Using subversion, instigation, …

Objects In Mind, Leah Kenttämaa-Squires May 2015

Objects In Mind, Leah Kenttämaa-Squires

Masters Theses

Daily distractions and interruptions are abundant and often cause anxiety, irritability, and impatience. The world is constantly in a battle for our attention making it difficult to be in one moment. Our continuous motion of both body and mind to combat these constant disturbances cause us to lose perspective, become quick to make judgments, and unable to recognize errors. We no longer take time to fully consider where our thoughts are leading, nor do we allow for a moment to let our thoughts go.

An object can promote open-minded thought by altering our perception or perspective of it, preventing automatic …

[Nos]Otros, Lucia Monge May 2015

[Nos]Otros, Lucia Monge

Masters Theses

Environmental issues are part of our daily conversations but not as common in our everyday considerations. The times call on us to approach things differently. We must find alternative ways to relate to each other and to understand the real issues of our ecology. We cannot perceive the whole through our accustomed senses, so we must open and expand our perception. Art offers that possibility, allowing for points of contact across distance while physically representing that space in between.

How do we relate to other living beings around us, determine what is living, and decide who is part of our …

Multiple Influences: From Witnessing Language To Performing It, Viviane Jalil May 2015

Multiple Influences: From Witnessing Language To Performing It, Viviane Jalil

Masters Theses

5The relationship between language and tools has always been one of influence. Our devices—pens, keyboards, smartphones—make language visible and affect its form and structure. But this exchange goes both ways: all acts of reading and writing are mediated by our expectations of content, and the instruments used to access it.

As modes of communication evolve, so too do the ways in which we think through language, creating a dynamic of perpetual adaptation. With the growing impact of technology upon our behaviors, this dialogue is becoming imbalanced, affecting how we engage with others, how we approach our machines, and how we …

Untitled, Esme Choi May 2015

Untitled, Esme Choi

Masters Theses

‘I’ is the most difficult entity for me to identify. The meaning of self, as I get closer, slips away. Sometimes I feel akin to one identity, and at other times, another. None of them feels completely accurate. In these moments of uncertainty, I remind myself that possessing multiple selves is acceptable and that in the spaces between them resides the power and possibility for eventually finding and defining my true self. My parents gave me four different names at different times due to our religion, Buddhism. At present, my name is Esme here in the United States, while in …

Mealspace : Beyond The Table, Lauren Tedeschi May 2015

Mealspace : Beyond The Table, Lauren Tedeschi

Masters Theses

This is a chronicle of a tableware enthusiast who set out to share her ideas by designing for the everyday eater. The quest began with questioning what an ideal meal experience is and why it revolves around a static, flat table. What are the aspects of present-day eating scenarios that could be improved upon? I considered the conventions of dining, studying traditional forms, materials and spaces related to this practice, and proposed new ways of eating. I designed props for establishing a new kind of mealspace, the objects and events paired together as performances. Each project or act is documented …

Handle, Wei Lah Poh May 2015

Handle, Wei Lah Poh

Masters Theses

Handle pays homage to the everyday object. Since Duchamp’s appropriation of the porcelain urinal with his work The Fountain (1917), we have been conceptually challenged to prod the notion of what art can be. While Duchamp denied utility, my process shifts and redefines originally intended utility in the context of enamelware. Through my work, I re-situate these everyday objects made from enameled metal, onto the body as jewelry.

Historically, the objects that comprise enameled domestic kitchenware objects—from pots and pans to spoons and forks to bowls and plates—were common objects, and were handled and utilized everyday. Once massproduced and ubiquitous …

Make Every Day Count: Longing, Vision, & Painting, Sarah R. Pater May 2015

Make Every Day Count: Longing, Vision, & Painting, Sarah R. Pater

Masters Theses

Images are non-verbal holders of narrative and meaning in Western culture. Historically, painting served this function—a job that we now generally give to digital photography and cinema. One task for contemporary painting, then, might simply be as a self-reflective metaphor for the experience of vision that is mostly lost in photographic technologies: seeing as looking plus touching. Paintings are simultaneously objects and images—corporeal material constructions and visceral illusionary fields. Given the current state of rapid image production, consumption, and instrumentalization, painting’s insistence on singularity and a more ‘composed gaze’—one that asks the viewer to re-read—stands out as significant and potentially …

A Slight Hysterical Tendency, Allison Baker May 2015

A Slight Hysterical Tendency, Allison Baker

Masters Theses

Sexuality, sculpture, and sadness as sites of female subversion.

A woman's internalized suffering and sadness is deployed as an act of resistance. Women have a long lineage of historically tragic female figures, particularly authors and artists that disrupt the status quo by relishing and thriving and they wallow in their sorrow. Women's collective and overwhelming sadness is both a singular and unified protest against cultural and social systems of oppression. Sad girls are bad girls.
