Stakes At The Edge Of Participation: Where Words And Things Are The Entirely Serious Title Of A Problem, Li Jönsson, Tau Ulv Lensskjold
Stakes At The Edge Of Participation: Where Words And Things Are The Entirely Serious Title Of A Problem, Li Jönsson, Tau Ulv Lensskjold
Nordes Conference Series
This paper examines how the material performativity of experimental prototypes can provide us with new insights into what it means to “have a stake” when engaged in co-design. For participants like birds and frail elderly people, a participatory interest cannot necessarily be articulated through language and discourse. Drawing on examples from the recent research project Urban Animals and Us (UA&Us), we suggest that experimental prototypes hold the promise of material enactments of relations that enable a re-articulation of what it means to have a stake in a socio-material event. In the specific context of this project, a stake might be …
Designing For Sustainability: Fostering Reflection In The Design Process, Eva Durall, Heidi Uppa, Teemu Leinonen
Designing For Sustainability: Fostering Reflection In The Design Process, Eva Durall, Heidi Uppa, Teemu Leinonen
Nordes Conference Series
Reflection is needed to provide solutions for wicked problems and to encourage social sustainability. Although reflection has been recognized as key in deep understanding and decision-making, it is rarely included in design agendas. In this paper we describe how reflection can enrich the design process, as well as their final solutions. We present design games as a participatory method that supports reflection and we exemplify it through two design cases. In each case, we point out several reflection triggers used in design games and we analyse the level of reflection they provoke. We conclude that opportunities for joint reflection are …
Design-Politics Nexus: Material Articulations And Modes Of Acting, Mahmoud Keshavarz
Design-Politics Nexus: Material Articulations And Modes Of Acting, Mahmoud Keshavarz
Nordes Conference Series
This paper is a theoretical attempt to formulate an ontological understanding of design as a set of articulations and modes of acting that manipulate the materiality of the world in order to re-direct and re-orient the possible ways of inhabiting, accessing and shaping the world. Such an understanding puts forward a way of approaching the question of politics in, of and for design that design and politics should be understood as a twofold embedded in one environment. This then has consequences both for design and for politics. I argue that these consequences can be understood better through unfolding the political …
Towards A Post-Anthropocene Perspective On The Welfare City: Public Landscapes As Green Heritage, Ellen Braae, Signe Sophie Bøggild
Towards A Post-Anthropocene Perspective On The Welfare City: Public Landscapes As Green Heritage, Ellen Braae, Signe Sophie Bøggild
Nordes Conference Series
The welfare city with its humanistic, anthropocentric and progressive design ideals of the good life and egalitarianism usually signifies the post-war welfare state’s tabula rasa suburbs with evergreen public landscapes as common ground for public happiness. Inspired by the recent discourse of the anthropocene, we examine the welfare city’s materialisation in a wider perspective, as a relational assemblage of culturally significant landscapes, organised and administered by various institutions, legislations and vocabularies, to structure and stage a national vision of the good life. We coin this as ‘the green heritage’; an umbrella term bridging the gap between perspectives of the anthropocentric, …
Cognitive Redirective Mapping: Designing Futures That Challenge Anthropocentrism, Esbentristan Schultz, Bec Barnett
Cognitive Redirective Mapping: Designing Futures That Challenge Anthropocentrism, Esbentristan Schultz, Bec Barnett
Nordes Conference Series
Humanity is facing, at both global and local levels, unprecedented challenges as the future, a byproduct of modernity, hurtles towards us. These future challenges are complex and world changing and include, but are not limited to, climate change, population growth, increasing poverty, the continuation of colonialism, war and the effects of technology. As designers we need to make use of the power that design holds not just to recognise, consider and design for these futures that we are facing but equally, to design for the ontological redirection of destructive future scenarios. To address these destructive futures and harness the transformative …
Object Theatre In Design Education, Jacob Buur, Preben Friis
Object Theatre In Design Education, Jacob Buur, Preben Friis
Nordes Conference Series
In a quest to improve our design teaching we experiment with the theatre genre of Object Theatre. We employ techniques from object theatre to challenge current thinking about product agency, movement and meaning, the spatial location, and the social settings of products. At the end of the project our graduate design students create a post-dramatic performance that engages an audience in experiencing and exploring the product concepts they create. Our experiences show that it helps us educate young designers in the abilities to take other perspectives than their own (in particular that of the ‘object’), and to ‘act before they …
Embracing Ambiguity In The Teaching Practices Of Peter Eisenman And Colin Rowe, Michael Jasper
Embracing Ambiguity In The Teaching Practices Of Peter Eisenman And Colin Rowe, Michael Jasper
Nordes Conference Series
A central mode of thinking for designers generally and architects in particular is that based on part to whole relationships, the idea that fractional relationships necessarily characterise coherent objects and building ensembles and in turn nature as the basis for beauty. The part-whole relationship can be taken as one index of an anthropocentric mode of thinking and practice. This paper investigates alternate modes of architectural thought which challenge the perceived limits of part-whole logics through select case studies from the work of architects Peter Eisenman (1932) and Colin Rowe (1920-1999). While there is evidence of this sensibility in their practice, …
The Paradox Of Design Methods: Towards Alternative Functions, Kathrina Dankl
The Paradox Of Design Methods: Towards Alternative Functions, Kathrina Dankl
Nordes Conference Series
During the last ten years design has been discussed as a driver for novelty and innovation. Design methods have been applied to challenges ranging from environmental pollution, food to health care and have been used in other disciplines and by people with non-design backgrounds alike. Social Innovation, Design Thinking and Co-Creation are three approaches that are strongly associated with this development. While their borders blur, their toolboxes – the methods they apply - are similar. Sustainability usually requires design methods that enable a participation in the design process of all interested parties. But while typical methods claim to favour multi-disciplinarily, …
Beyond Visualization: Exploring New Thinking In Production Team Dynamics For News Websites, Yiyun Zha
Beyond Visualization: Exploring New Thinking In Production Team Dynamics For News Websites, Yiyun Zha
Nordes Conference Series
As part of a larger study aiming at understanding and improving interactive reader experiences through a study of news production team dynamics, as a complex, multi-faceted endeavour, this paper looks at the key factors affecting in-house visual journalists’ view of news production and their ability to think aesthetically. A number of impacts influenced by new technologies will be explored, followed by discussion on the rationale and development of news production processes that proposes a range of challenges for creative workers. I intend to show how these movements call for a radical reconsideration of new thinking about news web site visualization.
The Meaning Of Biotic Artifacts: Studies On Fruit And Vegetables, Johanna Kleinert
The Meaning Of Biotic Artifacts: Studies On Fruit And Vegetables, Johanna Kleinert
Nordes Conference Series
This paper presents the plan of a research project that started in April 2015. The topic of this study are agricultural crops and their property of being both natural and artificial at the same time. To describe such living organisms at the intersection between the natural and the artificial world, one can use the terms “biotic artifacts” or “Biofakte” in German (Karafyllis 2003). This paper defines the state of research that is the basis for my work. Additionally, I explain the research design, the questions, methods and goals of this study. In the end, I give an insight into the …
Disctinct Approaches To Design Education: Preparing Future Designers For An Amplified Practice Of Design, Mafalda Moreira
Disctinct Approaches To Design Education: Preparing Future Designers For An Amplified Practice Of Design, Mafalda Moreira
Nordes Conference Series
As a century of ‘Fluid Landscapes’ in Alain Touraine’s words, our time shows a scenario of growing complexity, rapid climate changes, wars, global financial crisis, and disruptive demographic changes. It could be said that society responds to this scenario by developing a growing social responsibility, environmental awareness and empathy, thus impacting design practices and education. Literature shows signs of an amplified design practice that demands to be evidenced. Responding to emergent practices, a distinct approach to postgraduate design education intends to help prepare the future workforce to embrace ambiguity in processes, and welcome complex and paradoxical realities in order to …

That’S The Smell Of Peacetime: Designing For Electricity Load Balancing, Stina Wessman, Rebekah Olsen, Cecilia Katzeff
That’S The Smell Of Peacetime: Designing For Electricity Load Balancing, Stina Wessman, Rebekah Olsen, Cecilia Katzeff
Nordes Conference Series
In this exploratory paper we review, reflect, and react upon recent research that heavily critiques common design approaches towards electricity load balancing. Through this review we identify overlooked opportunity spaces for design in which we situate a prototype called Peacetime as an alternative approach to load balancing on the electrical grid. In sharp contrast to home energy management systems (HEMS) and in-home displays (IHD’s) which provide detailed energy data, Peacetime employs frameworks from slow time and emotional design, and from ambient multimodal interfaces to create a stronger and different experience in relation to load balancing. We present the Peacetime concept …
Designing Curriculum Interventions For Teaching Sustainable Design In Thailand, Treechada Chotiratanapinun
Designing Curriculum Interventions For Teaching Sustainable Design In Thailand, Treechada Chotiratanapinun
Nordes Conference Series
As part of a larger study aiming at building a pedagogical model for teaching sustainability to Thai undergraduate design students, this paper looks at key factors affecting the learners’ view of sustainability and their ability to think critically. A number of unique cultural issues will be explored, followed by discussion on the rationale and development of the curriculum interventions in a participatory action research plan that seeks to unfold if transformative learning is necessary for facilitating a paradigm shift towards sustainability in Thailand’s design education.
A Car-Free Year: Providing Vehicles For Change, Mia Hesselgren, Hanna Hasselqvist, Elina Eriksson
A Car-Free Year: Providing Vehicles For Change, Mia Hesselgren, Hanna Hasselqvist, Elina Eriksson
Nordes Conference Series
This paper describes an interventionist design research project called a Car-free Year, where three families substitute their cars for a fleet of light electric vehicles during one year. The aim is to study how this intervention changes the families’ everyday practices, as well as suggest how design can support and sustain such a change on a larger scale. If radically new paradigms are to be shaped, changes are needed both in what is considered normalities and in people’s everyday practices. We argue that design can play an important role in the transition towards more sustainable futures and new normalities.
The Performance Of Nonhuman Behaviour, Claudia Dutson, Delfina Fantinivan Ditmar, Dan Lockton
The Performance Of Nonhuman Behaviour, Claudia Dutson, Delfina Fantinivan Ditmar, Dan Lockton
Nordes Conference Series
This workshop is situated at the convergence of technology, behaviour and people’s understanding of the nonhuman entities with which they interact, questioning the ideas of ‘intelligence’ and ‘smartness’. As the Internet of Things, ‘smart cities’, Quantified Self, and similar concepts intersect with design for behaviour change and sustainable behaviour, becoming pressing research themes across product, service, interaction and architectural design, we ask how the relationships between humans and nonhumans are characterised and articulated.

Object Theatre In Design, Preben Friis, Merja Ryöppy, Jacob Buur
Nordes Conference Series
In this workshop we will demonstrate a set of techniques from the post-dramatic genre of Object Theatre and discuss how they can enrich design practice and design research. The work brings together a design tradition of engaging objects in co-design and a theatre competence of improvising action with objects. With the participants we will inquire into: Object puppetry (exploring objects from ‘within’), Improvising movements (action before thought), Staging objects (context dependence), and Multi-stakeholder drama (object perspectives).
Conducting Design Research In Pakistan’S Craft Sector: Opportunities And Limitations, Gwendolyn Kulick
Conducting Design Research In Pakistan’S Craft Sector: Opportunities And Limitations, Gwendolyn Kulick

Craft production in Pakistan has many facets, from cheap exploitative mass production to exquisite product lines, highlighting the beauty of the handmade. For my current PhD research, a specific field of practice has been identified: craft projects aiming to develop income generation opportunities for poor craft producers. The development of successful strategies towards including them into craft business value chains long term is the aim of the research, presented in this paper. Aspects of the complex relationship between craft tradition, craft production, poverty alleviation and empowerment inform my topic. Research methods like a case study investigation are described. My simultaneous …

Exploring Context And Building Empathy With The Youth In Southern Africa, Vikki Du Preez, Ryna Cilliers, Priscilla Chueng-Nainby, Satu Miettinen
Nordes Conference Series
This paper explores the use of a collective imagery framework, as part of a participatory design workshop, facilitated by the My Dream World project in Namibia. The workshop focused on issues relating to youth unemployment in Southern Africa. The collective imagery framework, discussed in this paper, was the first phase of the participatory workshop. The framework aimed to externalise individual creative imagery, in order to create a safe, creative space for participants to explore their own perceptions regarding youth context and unemployment, as well as those of others. This paper documents the context, process, and participant experience, and aims to …
Design And Social Innovation For The Development Of Human Smart Cities, Francesca Rizzo, Alessandro Deserti, Onur Cobanli
Design And Social Innovation For The Development Of Human Smart Cities, Francesca Rizzo, Alessandro Deserti, Onur Cobanli
Nordes Conference Series
Urban transformation is widely recognized as a complex phenomenon, rich in uncertainty. It is the unpredictable consequence of complex interplay between urban forces (both top-down or bottom-up), urban resources (spatial, social, economic and infrastructural as well as political or cognitive) and transformation opportunities (endogenous or exogenous). The recent attention to Urban Living Lab and Human Smart City initiatives is disclosing a promising bridge between the micro-scale environments and dynamics of such forces and resources and the urban governance mechanisms. This bridge is represented by those urban collaborative ecosystems, where processes of smart service co-design take place through dialogic interaction with …

Changing a company’s role and position in its context towards a more ambitious profile centred on waste minimisation can be challenging due to external factors such as regulations and economic logics, but also internal challenges of transforming visions into supporting activities can hinder the role change. This paper focuses on the waste minimisation project Nulskrald (Zerowaste) initiated by AVV. The project has undergone two phases without fulfilling its vision. A designerly approach was applied in a strategic workshop as the company faced the launch of the third phase. Here the Actantial model and the Strategic Pyramid were applied and conjoined …
Press Play: Acts Of Defining (In) Fluid Assemblages, Johan Redström, Heather Wiltse
Press Play: Acts Of Defining (In) Fluid Assemblages, Johan Redström, Heather Wiltse
Nordes Conference Series
Although design continuously has been expanding its scope of concern and intervention from products to processes, experience, and entire product and service ecologies, ‘things’ remain central to how we think about design and use. But ‘things’ have changed. Contemporary materials, technologies and contexts of design and use, we argue, now result in ‘things’ that need to be understood as fluid assemblages rather than traditional objects. These often combine a surface-level simplicity of use with dynamic, sophisticated, and hidden backend complexity. In order to investigate these issues we consider a simple design case and how it has evolved over time and …
Precious Materials Of Interaction: Exploring Interactive Accessories As Jewellery Items, Vasiliki Tsaknaki, Ylva Fernaeus, Martin Jonsson
Precious Materials Of Interaction: Exploring Interactive Accessories As Jewellery Items, Vasiliki Tsaknaki, Ylva Fernaeus, Martin Jonsson
Nordes Conference Series
In this paper we present a series of design explorations on the theme of wearable and mobile technology through the lens of jewellery design. This is done by looking at properties of traditional fine jewellery in terms of material considerations and crafting processes, as well as considerations related to patterns of wear and interaction. By using jewellery as a point of departure, both theoretically and practically, we discuss four topics: a) the gestalt of electronic artefacts versus jewellery design, b) material preciousness, c) interactive properties of physical materials, and d) jewellery usage as an inspiration for new interactive designs.

Different Data Detroit (+ Stockholm), Patricio Davila, Daniel Mccafferty, Rachele Riley, Joshua Singer
Different Data Detroit (+ Stockholm), Patricio Davila, Daniel Mccafferty, Rachele Riley, Joshua Singer
Nordes Conference Series
Different Data is a collaborative critical design research project by which we collect, manipulate, and display data in location-specific, and theme- driven scenarios. As research through-design and practice-based research, we investigates place and explore methods for generating and collecting data, developing an experimental approach to visualizing connections and meaning. We map hidden, overlooked and silent aspects of the urban cultural ecology. We collect narratives of cities using standard datasets transforming it to ‘different data’—that which is affective, emotional, and subjective; marginal and little-valued; esoteric and ephemeral; idiosyncratic and absurd; questionable and inappropriate. Work is executed publicly into a seamful artifact …
The City At Play / Co-Designing Games As Eco-Political Agency, Mette Agger Eriksen, Maria Hellström Reimer
The City At Play / Co-Designing Games As Eco-Political Agency, Mette Agger Eriksen, Maria Hellström Reimer
Nordes Conference Series
“The City At Play” displays parts of how co-design researchers in collaboration with civil servants practically have engaged in exploring urban ecologies by challenging current collaborative municipal mapping and transition processes through game development. The exhibit is a narrative installation of tangible traces from the participatory prototyping sessions and “animating” interventions into municipal planning contexts - in this case climate transition in the Öresund region. It is argued that a game inspired co-designing mind-set – rather than a problem-solving approach – presents ways to explore and critically reflect upon dynamic urban complexities as eco-political contexts of competition and collaboration across …
Designerly Influence On Politics And The Press: Changing A Deadlocked Relationship, Sune Gudiksen
Designerly Influence On Politics And The Press: Changing A Deadlocked Relationship, Sune Gudiksen
Nordes Conference Series
In recent years, political communication and political television debates have become farcical because of the professionalization of political communication. This has resulted in a deadlock between politicians, journalists and citizens, who appear to have fundamentally different goals. Consequently, television debates have become predictable, less focused on political argument, and far removed from their consequences in the daily lives of citizens. Drawing on empirical data from a workshop attended by a diverse set of stakeholders - journalists, producers, politicians, and media students - this paper presents the initial findings on how co-design and design games can take part directly in the …

This exploratory paper provides an account on the big Polish cities that have recently undertaken major problems of so called revitalization. According to New Urbanism ideas, these projects should involve participation of inhabitants and address needs of different actors which dwell in the cities. We introduce two cases of Warsaw and Poznań where the concept of participation becomes misunderstood and the cities’ authorities’ attitude towards urban green removes it – literally and metaphorically – from the soil and makes it a city property easy to move and remove. These cases show how the cities’ policy towards urban greenery focuses different …

Sharing Eco-Soap Knowledge: Joosoap Studio, Ying-Ju Lin, Andrea Botero
Nordes Conference Series
In this paper we document some of the experiences gained while designing and prototyping JooSoap Studio. JooSoap Studio aims to make it easy for people to gather and make eco-soap products together, anywhere in the world. The Studio is part of a larger project that aims to spread sustainable knowledge around making ecological cleaning soap (eco-soap) from recycled used (kitchen) cooking oil pioneered by activist communities in Japan and Taiwan. JooSoap Studio experiments with tools, practices and infrastructures that will help spreading this knowledge to more communities, through local engagement, aiming at sustainability and replicability of the information.
Ways Of Seeing Service: Surrogates For A Design Material, Johan Blomkvist
Ways Of Seeing Service: Surrogates For A Design Material, Johan Blomkvist
Nordes Conference Series
One ongoing debate in service design concerns what can and/or should be designed when working with services. I argue that, as service design grows both academically and in practice, the material of service design is collectively created by individual contributions to service development and design research. This paper looks at such contributions by examining representations, or surrogates, that designers make and use to visualise and prototype services. These representations inform us about what is considered part of service as a design material, including service concepts, processes and systems.
