I am interested in the dilemma thatK–12 art teachers often bring up when we talk about art and teaching; the struggle to maintain their artistic identity. School is seen as a sometimes rewarding but generally time-consuming detour from the art studio.They try to keep the artist alive by making art “on the side” or in the margins of their teaching responsibilities. At the edge of nothingness and invisibility is the materiality of collecting. These reminders of what cannot be seen include reliquaries containing the bones of saints, Buddhist shrines, and boxes designed to capture the fleeting experience of a day together. On a mountain in Nepal, I gathered green granite crystals, along with scraps of prayer flags, rusted pitons, and old coins. Later, these become a shrine to an ineffable experience of living in the clouds, which I named the Meditation Space. This thesis, Fragmented, outlines Rebel’s explorations with materials and techniques that led to the creation of his current work that was presented in his MFA Exhibition. Fragmented focuses on elements of abandoned and ignored structures found in both urban and rural communities. Rebel is interested in the visual characteristics directly related to manufactured landscapes that have been reshaped by neglect, specifically, surfaces that appear old and weathered. The assemblages he makes in reference to these deserted sites do not comment on specific architectural locations. Instead, they are meant to emphasize common traits found at multiple sites.
