All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Stone workers were in high risk of vibration exposure that might lead to health problem. Studies and previous research have shown that there are correlations between whole body vibration, hand/arm vibration and several musculoskeletal disorders, neurological diseases, and different cumulative trauma disorders such as hearing loss and carpel tunnel syndrome. In order to study the health effects among stone workers, there were seven stone companies selected from Taiwan and China participated in this study. Effects Of Joint Preparation Angle Of Single-Vee Butt Welds On The Tensile Strength Of Astm A36 Carbon Steel, Matthew Mcclure May 2011

Effects Of Joint Preparation Angle Of Single-Vee Butt Welds On The Tensile Strength Of Astm A36 Carbon Steel, Matthew Mcclure

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Welding is a multi-faceted procedure of manufacturing and can occur at any point during the creation of a product. Quality issues in welding can have disastrous, or even deadly, consequences. The issue of weld preparation angle is one of several different elements that have a direct correlation on the quality of a welded joint. The purpose of this research centers on resultant tensile strength of a single-vee butt joint in carbon steel with various preparation angles. Preparation angles were machined on twenty-six pieces of ASTM A36 carbon steel in 5° increments in order to produce thirteen samples with included preparation …

Darken The Beauty Spots, Jillian Ellis May 2011

Darken The Beauty Spots, Jillian Ellis

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Darken the Beauty Spots uses images gathered from sources such as Vogue, Good Housekeeping, and action movies to discuss whether images of truly empowered women exist in the media. The project examines six different and specific patterns of imagery found in the media that could potentially be seen as either empowering or repressive. Each pattern occupies its own 35” x 40” canvas that contains between four and eight found images taken out of their original contexts, cropped into fragments, and strategically placed on the canvas in order to create relationships between the images. The work is meant to remain …

What The Health Magazine Redesign, Sarah Glaser May 2011

What The Health Magazine Redesign, Sarah Glaser

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

I was art director for the Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 issues of What the Health magazine, a student-run publication on campus at Syracuse University. To put together the issues I oversaw an entire design department consisting of photographers and graphic artists. Photography assignments often came in late leaving little time for design work, and I did not feel satisfied with the ultimate layout design of the magazine. For my capstone project I took on the challenge creating a final book combining the strongest pieces from both original issues in a redesigned layout. I wanted to overcome the inconsistency that …

Fox Fire, Emily Watanabe May 2011

Fox Fire, Emily Watanabe

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

“Fox Fire” is an independent animated short. Its plot is centered on a young boy, a mysterious girl, and their adventures at a Japanese summer festival. The purpose of this project was to create a short and fun animation to stir the imagination of its viewers while incorporating elements of Japanese culture and experimenting with unique aesthetic choices.

During the initial brainstorming stages of this capstone, I decided that I wanted to somehow incorporate pieces of Japanese culture and mythology into the project. Not only is the folklore fascinating, I often enjoy expressing my Japanese heritage through artwork. The choice …

Exhibition of Recent Stone and Wood Sculptures by Elkana O. Ong'esa

The Fourth Dimension, a concept that I have been working on for many years with the objective of assisting people with visual disabilities to appreciate sculpture more. The use of stone, wood and metal allows me to create forms and surface finishes that address the issue of tactile vision or perception that I try to apply in achieving communication in the fourth dimension.

The Locational Determinants Of Internet Usage In Asia And Nepal, Smriti Chand

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the relationship between internet development and various socio-economic factors that are assumed to affect internet infrastructure development decision. The data collected for 35 Asian countries is secondary data collected from various sources. This study tests six hypotheses about the impact of various socio-economic factors and economic freedom indicators on Internet Penetration Rate (IPR) and Internet Service Providers (ISP). The findings show that the IPR can be statistically explained by one independent variable: GDP (Gross Domestic Product). The study models also include Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), literacy rate, fertility rate, the percentage of urban population, the country‟s status …

Physiological And Perceived Effects Of Head Cooling During Simulated Firefighting Activity, Amy L. Mckenzie May 2011

Physiological And Perceived Effects Of Head Cooling During Simulated Firefighting Activity, Amy L. Mckenzie

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Accessory cooling devices have been developed to protect firefighters (FF) from suffering an exertional heat illness by attenuating the rise in core body temperature. Head cooling (HC) via a cold gel pack placed inside the helmet is one cooling mechanism marketed to FF, but the research regarding its efficacy is limited. PURPOSE: To investigate the physiological and perceived effects of HC during simulated firefighting activity (FFA). METHODS: Participants (males; 40±8 y; 168±7 cm; 91.8±14.2 kg) were randomly assigned to either the HC group (n=9), who completed FFA while wearing a cold gel pack inside their helmet, or the control (CON) …

From Form To Form, Pia Bergholtz May 2011

From Form To Form, Pia Bergholtz

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

My MFA thesis project is an exploration of the evolving nature of patterns, and how set shapes and lines can take on new form through position, scale, repetition and color. I have designed four Scandinavian style patterns with imagery and colors drawn from my roots and childhood in Sweden. With the inspiration and direction of a variety of different cultural imagery and form, I then explored how to make new patterns from each of these, ending up with over 100 different patterns and variations from the original four. The exhibit represents the wide range of transformation that can be achieved, …
