Jeff Koons: In His Space, Erica Frank Jan 2009

Jeff Koons: In His Space, Erica Frank

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

Space, a major visual element, can be examined in depth in Jeff Koons’s artwork. Koons produces art in different series and each series contains numerous pieces. The appendages of the mechanical devices, a major element of space in the early series, accentuate the sexuality present in Koons’s art, as well as the surface quality and materials used in all the series. Koons’s obsession with perfection is what generates the flawless exteriors making the surface material void of human touch and elevating the sometimes kitsch subjects of the pieces. Koons uses stainless steel, a relatively inexpensive material associated with manufactured goods …

That Moment Now = 此時.那刻, Tin Yan, Celia Ko

Artists-in-Residence Programme : Exhibition Catalogues

Art Exhibition by Celia Ko

In a new exhibition ‘Th at Moment Now’ on show at Lingnan University, Hong Kong artist Celia Ko presents three bodies of work that take as their subject the artist’s relationship to her maternal Chinese ancestry. In pursuing her subject Ko has created a trilogy of images through which the interior life of her family is approached from diff erent vantage points. Using large-scale images and hand made garments and jewellery Ko explores the pervasive power of familial myths and narratives.

The first part of the exhibition are large-scale portraits of her mother’s parents: grandfather …

Saturated Memory, Jewel Noll Jan 2009

Saturated Memory, Jewel Noll

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

We face experiences in life that we cannot ignore; we approach them with uncertainty and understand them with what rational thought that we have to offer. But what about the elements of an event that we never fully understand, yet carry with us to pick apart and revisit time and time again? It is the tastes that linger in our mouths, thread through our thoughts and formulate our personalities. These are the memories that evolve us into the future and keep us searching for answers. We saturate ourselves with these uncertainties, waiting for a bit of light, a chance to …

Der Gebrochene Rücken: A Variation Of The German Case Binding, Peter D. Verheyen Jan 2009

Der Gebrochene Rücken: A Variation Of The German Case Binding, Peter D. Verheyen

Librarian Publications

The “gebrochene rücken” is variant of the German case “Bradel” binding, something often described as the quintessential German binding structure. It is precise and adaptive to a variety of needs and aesthetic considerations can be worked “in boards” or as a case. Its closest modern relative is the simplified binding (reliure simplifée) as demonstrated by Sün Evrard and Laura Wait. While there are structural differences (that are not as great as one would think given that one is German and the other French), what both these bindings have in common is that they allow for the use of different covering …

Mark Greenwold’S Excited Self, Shannon Egan Jan 2009

Mark Greenwold’S Excited Self, Shannon Egan

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

In a recent exhibition catalog of painter Mark Greenwold at New York’s DC Moore Gallery, the artist, in lieu of a conventional statement about his work, conducted a self-interview. To his question, ‘‘Why?’’ Greenwold responded:

"I thought that I could possibly get at things that another person might find too daunting or too polite to ask—very obvious questions by the way, that I’d probably be too thin-skinned or reactive to give an honest response to if another person asked the question." [excerpt]

Citric Acid Cross-Linking Of Starch Films, Narendra Reddy, Yiqi Yang Jan 2009

Citric Acid Cross-Linking Of Starch Films, Narendra Reddy, Yiqi Yang

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

This paper shows that citric acid can cross-link starch and improve the tensile strength, thermal stability and decrease the dissolution of starch films in water and formic acid. The poor mechanical properties and water stability of starch have restricted its industrial applications. Although cross-linking is a common approach to improve the properties of starch products, current starch cross-linking methods are either expensive, toxic or do not impart the desired properties to the cross-linked materials. In this research, the possibility of cross-linking starch films using citric acid to improve their strength and stability was examined. Citric acid cross-linked starch films show …

Russian Icons And American Money, 1928-1938, Wendy Salmond Jan 2009

Russian Icons And American Money, 1928-1938, Wendy Salmond

Art Faculty Articles and Research

The article explores the marketing tactics and consumer expectations with regards to icons released in the street markets and provincial cities of Soviet Russia and acquired by American collectors from 1928-1938. These icons, including those from Byzantium in the tenth century, were seen as cultural commodities during the Russian revolution and the subsequent socialist construction. The Soviet apparatus Antikvariat was tasked with appraising the icon collections held by the Gosmuzeifond or the State Museum Reserve for exports.

Game Assessment For Miltary Application, Patricia Mcneese Jan 2009

Game Assessment For Miltary Application, Patricia Mcneese

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of conducting this research was to establish game assessment guidelines and characteristics for integrating elected characteristics of games into ongoing instructional approaches. The cost of repurposing commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) games could offer a considerably lower cost alternative than the cost of creating a new instructional game developed for a specific instructional goal. The McNeese Game Assessment Tool (MGAT), created for the assessment of games in this usability study, is currently in a beta stage and was found to have potential for future game assessment. The overall assessment indicated that the tool was effective in analyzing game products for …

Ambigrams: The Art And The Math, Callie Kronlage Jan 2009

Ambigrams: The Art And The Math, Callie Kronlage

Honors Program Theses

Because ambigrams are a relatively new concept, I found little mathematical research on them. Throughout this paper, I will address the role of ambigrams as a mathematical entity, an artistic outlet, and even an educational tool. Along with ways to use ambigrams, there are also descriptions of the nine different types of ambigrams, and a chart that can be used to create two of the most common types of ambigrams. Mathematically, ambigrams contain many symmetrical aspects, which are important to the study of Geometry. Within this, I have researched mathematical aspects of three of the ambigram types and found some …

An Adaptive Reuse Design For Faculty Living., Valentina Moore Jan 2009

An Adaptive Reuse Design For Faculty Living., Valentina Moore

Theses and Dissertations

Adaptive reuse of historic buildings is often a good way to make use of empty unutilized spaces that are architecturally valuable to function as desirable and pleasing environments. The inherited architectural features, large amounts of craftsmanship in the details that usually accompany these older spaces are the appealing traits, which make them exclusive. The design idea of faculty housing in an early twenty’s century Baptist church currently used as the Virginia Commonwealth University Music Center represent an alternative option to it’s existing use. The faculty housing idea in this thesis, as a second adaptive reuse option does not try to …

Like Alike, Jill Zevenbergen Jan 2009

Like Alike, Jill Zevenbergen

Theses and Dissertations

Like Alike explores notions of pleasure and beauty through an examination of mundane activity. Pleasure is simple, uncomplicated niceness. Pleasure is forgettable and related to the norm. Beauty is complicated and hardly predicted. Finding beauty in the banal provides an escape from mundane life. The banal, then becomes unforgettable. The nondescript, everyday experience becomes important and gains meaning. Like Alike's electronic format is adapted from the original format of an artist book.

Kingdom Compossible, Ryan Lauterio

Theses and Dissertations

Does God exist? Can we know for sure? What might it mean to know this? Furthermore what might it look like to make works of art while also seeking to find answers to these questions? This thesis details my personal experiences growing up in a world steeped in postmodernism and my move to answer such questions while looking to develop a meaningful, clear worldview and body of work. I have turned my focus on specific episodes in my life, which significantly illuminate a progression of thinking and experience. Together these thoughts and experiences have become the impetus for both questions …

Online Metacognitive Tool Development: Final Development, Joseph Luca, Mark Mcmahon

Research outputs pre 2011

The authors of this paper have been developing an online metacognitive tool over the past four years through a process of iterative design and development stages using Design-Based research. Based on feedback from students, tutors and peers, the application has now been finally developed and is available for public download. The application helps students working in teams reflect on their learning strategies through a process of planning, monitoring and evaluation, and allows students to reflect on their performance.
