Real Life, Invented Selves: An Analysis Of Online Self-Portraiture, Nicole E. Greene

Scripps Senior Theses

The Internet has been a mystifying and nebulous concept since its birth in the early 90s (Kelly). Just two years ago in an infamous public address, former Senator Ted Stevens attempted to explain the internet to the masses, calling it a series of tubes (Doctorow). This statement was followed by a flurry of blog postings, YouTube videos and general mockery from the computer savvy communities, thus confirming the fact that most people, besides the geeks, still don't fully comprehend what the Internet is. At its inception, PHDs, scientists and professors of anthropology alike hailed the Internet as a potential "gaia …

The Role Of The Viewer In The Gallery Space, Meghan Berliner Apr 2009

The Role Of The Viewer In The Gallery Space, Meghan Berliner

Scripps Senior Theses

My installation, "The Viewers", consists of three life-sized figures and a projected video feed. The figures are placed in and around the gallery space, and the video originates from a hidden camera installed in one of the figures eyes. The first figure that the viewer encounters upon entering the gallery space is hyper-realistic security guard. His position behind the gallery circulation desk, a space which is traditionally assumed not to be an 'art space' allows him to view those entering the gallery while remaining relatively unnoticed. A camera that is installed in his one of his eye sockets and hidden …

Giard Fellowship Evokes Enthusiastic Response, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz Apr 2009

Giard Fellowship Evokes Enthusiastic Response, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

In his 1997 book, Particular Voices: Portraits of Gay and Lesbian Writers, Robert Giard captures nearly 200 photographs of his contemporaries. Giard's compilation of these portraits of lesbian and gay writers, carefully accompanied with textual excerpts, led this coffee-table monograph to stand as a supreme example of what Giard himself describes as "the autobiography of one gay reader."

Case Study: Student Art As Construction Beautification, Barbara Merolli

Staff publications

The article presents a case study of using student art as decoration at the College of the Holy Cross. The College's library was undergoing some construction and as a result the Atrium, one of the most aesthetically pleasing features of the library, was boarded up. Cristi Rinklin, a visual arts assistant professor, coordinated a final project for her students of a course on the principles of color theory to create artwork through scientific inspiration which was then turned to wallpaper.

Understanding Arts-Based Methods In Managerial Development, Steven S. Taylor, Donna Ladkin Mar 2009

Understanding Arts-Based Methods In Managerial Development, Steven S. Taylor, Donna Ladkin

Faculty Articles

With the rising use of arts-based methods in organizational development and change, scholars have started to inquire into how and why these methods work. We identify four processes that are particular to the way in which arts-based methods contribute to the development of individual organization managers and leaders: through the transference of artistic skills, through projective techniques, through the evocation of "essence," and through creating artifacts such as masks, collages, or sculpture, a process we call "making." We illustrate these processes in detail with two case examples and then discuss the implications for designing the use of arts-based methods for …

The Constellations Of Palomar, Shane Haley Mar 2009

The Constellations Of Palomar, Shane Haley

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Palomar is one of the oldest observatories in the United States with one of the largest telescopes built; Thousands visit Mount Palomar each year to stare through a lens and get a glimpse of distant constellations and to view what is beyond unaided vision. For me, this physical observatory is a perfect metaphor for the intemal Palomar I have created. Palomar is not just a location on a map or a building on a mountaintop. Palomar is a place of quiet contemplation where I go to connect with all that is good in life. It is where the tangible meets …

Decisive Moments In Fiction, Janae Corrado Jan 2009

Decisive Moments In Fiction, Janae Corrado

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I approach artmaking with a sense of intrigue, portraying the human condition as seen through my own eyes. The results that surface are female forms combined with subliminal subjective symbolism--a fusion of my personal experiences and influences created through a partially subconscious process. I use this artistic process to help me understand myself and I dare my viewers to seek their own answers within the implied narratives I choose to paint.
