This is War! The Pain, Power, and Paradox of Images

October 5 to April 4, 2008

Joel and Lila Harnett Museum of Art and Print Study Center

Introduction

If "war is the father of all things," as the Greek philosopher Heraclitus lamented many centuries ago, then perhaps art is the mother. War continues to be a perennial subject in all of the arts, often symbolizing mortality and struggle and illustrating the triumphs and degradation of humanity. Our exhibition comes at a time when many museums are presenting war imagery in their galleries, from historical explorations to contemporary artists contending with …

Design With Benefits : Combining Healthcare Step Programs And Design Tools To Make A Difference In Community Health, Emily E. Frye Jan 2008

Design With Benefits : Combining Healthcare Step Programs And Design Tools To Make A Difference In Community Health, Emily E. Frye

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

I am aware that there is increasing emphasis being placed on designers pro actively designing services as opposed to simply creating artifacts. Looking past “selling” and moving toward enabling solutions that are for the greater good, this paper makes use of ethnographic contexts of communities involved to guide design. My thesis project designs a service plan and a program with artifacts. It is aimed at helping rural West Virginia Clinics intervene with unhealthy patients to help them prepare for a pro-active lifestyle. This program, named BeneFIT, was designed with user-centered methods and incorporates the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) developed by James …

Painting The Sublime Landscape And Learning To See Nature Along The Way, Deborah Browne Jan 2008

Painting The Sublime Landscape And Learning To See Nature Along The Way, Deborah Browne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My thesis is one artist's response to the question of the relevance of landscape painting today, focusing on the communication of the idea of environmental stewardship. The process of studying nature and transferring that vision to canvas promotes greater understanding of the beauty and complexity of elements that comprise ecosystems. The artist possesses a creative impulse finding satisfaction in making artwork that expresses a love of nature as part of a larger worldview. If done well, the persuasive power of such art may be enormous. Comprised of oil paintings and written work, this thesis establishes a way of approaching both …

Aph(L)Orisms (Maximus In Minimis), Florentin Smarandache Jan 2008

Aph(L)Orisms (Maximus In Minimis), Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This collection of “aphlorisms” resulted from a search in my old manuscripts. At that time I was preoccupied everyday with noting down in my little notebook various interesting-to-me expressions that I heard or that came to my mind. Etymologically, aphorism + floral = aph(L)orism, which is a short reflection written on a floral design, or a short poetry accompanied by an artistic background. They are colorful contemplations. Maximus in minimis (Lat.) means very much in very little [max in min], or condensed thought, or ideating essence. They are actually maxims, adages, sayings mostly in one line (uni-stich) with a title, …

Purpose Machines, Douglas Edric Stanley Jan 2008

Purpose Machines, Douglas Edric Stanley

SWITCH

This article explores how machines can be designed to have purpose - not just to follow instructions, but to react, adapt, and change based on their environment. The author compares early ideas from cybernetics and computer science with modern technologies, showing how machines today can be flexible, creative, and open-ended. He also questions the idea that artists can “re-purpose” machines, since machines are already made to be re-used.

Oil & Water, Miranda Allbritten Jan 2008

Oil & Water, Miranda Allbritten

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

I am interested in subtleties and the understated, the trace of impact and the slight of presence. As the ability to accurately recall past experiences lessens with time, we are left with an outline, a shadow, a hint of sensation that may have, at once, been thorough and exhaustive. How experience is lost and then reinvented, how subtle but specific changes in tone, expression and movement linger and reinvent themselves in memory, are motivating elements in my work. The paradox between an encounter and the recollection or reinvention of that encounter is at the core of my investigation, both in …

Paintings, Michael Burton Jan 2008

Paintings, Michael Burton

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

In my current work I explore process and my fascination vvith human flesh by using the physical nature of paint as an equivalency for images and surfaces. I am fascinated vvith how nesh can have different quaitities. It can be brittle, rough, or smooth, it can form calluses and it can change color. Paint has these same quaUties. When I see peeling skin on my body, it reminds me of peeling paint and I find it hard to resist touching either surface . Ideas for images are generated by examining my nesh for cuts, wrinkles or boney protrusions or by …

In An Expression Of The Inexpressible: Even This Title Is Stolen, But I Chose It, Carmen Alis Mcleod

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides a tour through an imaginary building that contains the work I have completed in the last two years at Virginia Commonwealth University. The body of the text provides a discussion of specific paintings as well as more general themes related to painting and art. The discussion includes thoughts on futility, desire, schism, the leap, collage, photography, materiality, painting, image, and landscape. The second part of the text is an abstract statement about the paintings included in the thesis show, Splinter Paintings.
