Casual Elegance: The Everyday Manipulation Of Design Elements For Physical, Social, And Spiritual Benefits, Carlos Eldevis Solano Guzman Jan 2008

Casual Elegance: The Everyday Manipulation Of Design Elements For Physical, Social, And Spiritual Benefits, Carlos Eldevis Solano Guzman

Capstone Research Projects

Designer Statement: Casual Elegance

As a Southern Scholar, my Senior Project deals with a subject that is not widely talked about: the elegance of everyday. I believe that there are some design elements which can be manipulated on a daily basis to achieve Casual Elegance, and thus gain physical, social, and spiritual benefits. As a designer graduating with a B.A. in Art, I want to point out specific designs that could be used to achieve the level of elegance and sophistication to which I am referring.

As an art major I had a show at the School of Visual Art …

The True Colors Of Trademark Law: Green-Lighting A Red Tide Of Anti Competition Blues, Ann Bartow Jan 2008

The True Colors Of Trademark Law: Green-Lighting A Red Tide Of Anti Competition Blues, Ann Bartow

Law Faculty Scholarship

The elevation of color to stand-alone trademark status illustrates the unbounded nature of trademarks within the judicial consciousness. The availability of color-alone marks also facilitates the commoditization of color in ways that complicate the development and distribution of products and services that use color for multiple purposes conterminously. The economic case for color-alone trademarks is severely undermined by careful observation of the ways that colors are actually deployed in commerce, which makes it clear that the trademarks of multiple goods and services can utilize the same color to telegraph the same message without confusing anyone or diluting the commercial power …

Perceptions Of Reality, Matthew Dombrowski Jan 2008

Perceptions Of Reality, Matthew Dombrowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My thesis explores the relationship between the human psyche and the perception of reality through the use of computer generated media. In a society in which we are bombarded with multimedia technology, we must look inside our selves for a true understanding of our past and memories. Rather than it acting as an escape from reality, my art becomes an opening for truth in reality.

Pitiful Creatures, Shaun Wightman Jan 2008

Pitiful Creatures, Shaun Wightman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

By focusing on character, humor, and loose narrative, I create a world full of quirky, pitiful creatures that blur the lines between illustration and "Fine Art". Inspired by golden age cartoons, Pop-Surrealism, and late 50's commercial art, I make work that speaks of the awkwardness of human emotion while keeping a "tongue in cheek" attitude about everyday life. This work is expressed through illustration, animation, sculpture, and a lot of sarcasm.

Journey, Suzann Martinsen Jan 2008

Journey, Suzann Martinsen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In my drawings and animation, I create a representation of a culture that is instilled in me, yet foreign. The work is inspired from a childlike perspective to depict a personal primitive experience with the Korean culture. The subtleties of the animations are meant to reflect the quiet nature of Asian paintings and to allow the viewer to experience and interpret it as they choose. I want others to see without hearing words in an already noisy world.

Warps & Wefts 2009, Carol Bier Jan 2008

Warps & Wefts 2009, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

The interlacing of warp and weft defines a woven fabric. The weaver strings warp yarns onto a loom, a frame designed to hold the warps parallel and taut, and then introduces the wefts sequentially. The process is weaving; the result is a textile.

When we think of textiles, we most often think of garments to clothe our bodies and furnishings to supply our domestic needs. But throughout history, textiles have also played a primary role in fashion, drawing on not only color and pattern but also draping qualities and the effects of tailoring to cover (or show off) the body. …

Anatomy Of An Arabetic Type Design, Saad D. Abulhab Jan 2008

Anatomy Of An Arabetic Type Design, Saad D. Abulhab

Publications and Research

Arabetic type design, like type design in general, should not be limited by rigid rules, other than those advocating open choice and user options. But as with all design fields, highlighting certain principles and guidelines is crucial to realizing a successful project. In an Arabetic font design environment, such guidelines and principles should reveal deeper understanding of various scripts visual and behavioral defining characteristics rather than mere traditional calligraphic and handwriting norms. A main goal of this study is to emphasize that designing Arabetic fonts is much easier than it is portrayed, and designers of all backgrounds should be more …

The Hybrid Sources Of Frida Kahlo, John Zarobell Jan 2008

The Hybrid Sources Of Frida Kahlo, John Zarobell

Global Studies Faculty Publications

Frida Kahlo was an exceptionally original artist whose paintings sometimes seem to emerge from her consciousness and experience without prior mediation. While Kahlo was an innovative artist who possessed a highly particular vision, it is not true that her art is without sources. The problem is that few art historians outside Mexico are familiar with the pictorial source material from which she drew her inspiration. Many scholars have documented the interest of Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera in Pre-Columbian sculpture and Mexican folk art, but her other influences are less well-known. This article will look at Kahlo’s art in …

The Politics Of Persuasion Versus The Construction Of Alternative Communities: Zines In The Writing Classroom, Aneil Rallin, Ian Barnard Jan 2008

The Politics Of Persuasion Versus The Construction Of Alternative Communities: Zines In The Writing Classroom, Aneil Rallin, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Articles and Research

We discuss how studying and creating zines in our composition classes allows our students to negotiate and explore the complexities of writing without the compulsions of many of the politically problematic commonplaces of composition pedagogy. We use zines to examine the unique ways in which their rhetorical devices address conflicts around questions of audience and diversity, as well as the particular questions that the zines raise about the politics of persuasion, our own writing practices, writing strategies that the zines suggest to us, and the construction of alternative communities.

The Sainte-Chapelle Ivory Virgin & Child: Rayonnant Style And Private Devotion, Caroline Harrington Jan 2008

The Sainte-Chapelle Ivory Virgin & Child: Rayonnant Style And Private Devotion, Caroline Harrington

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper examines a major shift in French Gothic sculpture of the second half of the thirteenth century, as exemplified by the Sainte-Chapelle Virgin and Child. During this period there was a new emphasis on elegance in art works, giving rise to a new style called Rayonnant, a style paralleled by a new emphasis on the humanity of Christ and the Virgin Mary. The scale and patronage of the Sainte-Chapelle Virgin and Child demonstrate the changing purpose of sculpture from a ceremonial role in church life to a private devotional object for the French elite, in particular king of France …

Constructing Entropy, Xanthe Isbister Jan 2008

Constructing Entropy, Xanthe Isbister

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Significant portions of my life have been spent in the wilderness of Nothern Canada. These experiences such as hiking, exploring, and prospecting, that began in early childhood created in me a profound respect and concern for the wilderness environment. I scek to capture and express this "sense of place" in my work. In the last th ree years visits to this region of Canada, or to any wilderness area, for that matter, have been minimal. This absence has created a drive within mc to employ memory, perhaps idealized, as source material in this ceramic sculpture. A demanding and labor -intensive …

Decay Of The Domestic, Kimberly J. Thomas Jan 2008

Decay Of The Domestic, Kimberly J. Thomas

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Because I was an adult when my parents divorced, I was aware of how the tumultuous situation and new knowledge were working to change my childhood memories. Past events became tainted, clarified, or muddled. Different from my memories was the idea of history, specifically a family's history. My inner narrative changed and to this day differs from my parents' narratives. This was a shocking realization of the subjective nature of history. Ultimately, the events of the divorce made me unsure of things of which I had been certain. Through these photographs I am questioning my ideas about family, memory, history, …

What Is In Front Of You?, Susan A. Dewsnap Jan 2008

What Is In Front Of You?, Susan A. Dewsnap

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Pots are familiar forms, approachable and understood. They are opened, looked into, lifted and held and this is when their hidden virtues of suggestively vast interior, weight and gravity are revealed. I continue to be intrigued by the questions that pots provoke: those of making, possibilities of use and by the endless manifest forms in which they appear throughout various cultures of the world. My recent work has been an investigation into the dynamics of how the drawing on the surface and the shape of a piece can be intimately connected, that one cannot exist without the other. I aspire …

Recollection, Eriko Fujita

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

World events, political satire and social commentary are expressed in my artwork. believe that under the current political circumstances, history is often ignored, forgotten or miscommunicated. My work is a response to the misinterpretation and continuous change in the world around us. I am interested in looking into the relationship between three countries, Japan, the U.S. and China. I grew up in Hiroshima, Japan until I was sixteen years old. Every summer, schools in Hiroshima have an intense educational program that teaches students about "peace" and how it is important for people to know that there is no such thing …

A Marketplace In Miniature: Norwich Pattern Books As Cultural Agency, Victoria Mitchell Jan 2008

A Marketplace In Miniature: Norwich Pattern Books As Cultural Agency, Victoria Mitchell

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

An eighteenth-century book of woven samples can be considered as a seminal link between the production of raw materials in one cultural context and clothing or furnishing in another. In bringing images of such samples from Norwich to Hawaii for a twenty-first century conference on Textiles as Cultural Expressions I am also conscious of mapping an openended dialogue which engages the historical and the contemporary. This perspective is recognized by anthropologist Arjun Appadurai when he says that ‘from a methodological point of view it is the things-in-motion that illuminate their human and social context.

Thus, although consideration of books and …

The Serpentine Essence Of A Chancay Gauze Headdress, Jessica Gerschultz Jan 2008

The Serpentine Essence Of A Chancay Gauze Headdress, Jessica Gerschultz

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

A small but fascinating Chancay gauze fragment in the collection of the Michael C. Carlos Museum stands out as an exemplary object that embodies the symbolic associations and aesthetic principles of the Peruvian coastline during the Late Intermediate Period (Fig. 1). Its weave structure, production process, iconography, and polychromy unite in reinforcing the protective and regenerative purposes of the original headdress. Consisting of variably spun threads knotted together, its unique discontinuous warp relates to its function in funerary and ceremonial contexts. Significantly, its weaver pushed beyond technical limitations to bring together the laborious techniques of gauze weaving and discontinuous warping …
