Metamorphoses Digital Photography In The Electronic Age And Perfectm Digital Photography In The Bay Area, Jan Ekenberg

SWITCH

Two exhibitions at the San Jose Museum of Modern Art, “Metamorphoses: Digital Photography in the Electronic Age” and “Pixel Perfect: Digital Photography in the Bay Area,” both debate whether digital photography is a kind of art based on how people interpret photography. With the advent of powerful computer software such as Adobe’s Photoshop, artists can easily manage their work regardless of whether they want to create collages, adjust the color, add additional layers of images or text, experiment with scale, or transform dreamlike ideas into surreal artworks for public display. The two shows challenge the principles of photography - to …

Editor's Notes: Sound, Loretta L. Lange Jan 1998

Editor's Notes: Sound, Loretta L. Lange

SWITCH

This switch article goes over the use of sound and how some people consider it to be a language, an art, or a form of technology. Lange refers to Agostino Di Scipio’s arguments on how technology was created by humans and therefore should be an art. More specifically, how sound can be an electronic art, especially since it can change or be manipulated just as musical artists create music. Next, she refers to Larry Wendt’s article and how sound composition or poetry is structured. He goes on to explain that sound-text doesn’t have a solid order and is flexible enough …

The New Plastic In Sculpture, Timothy M. Gallant Jan 1998

The New Plastic In Sculpture, Timothy M. Gallant

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

In his "new plastic" paintings, Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) created an aesthetic of universal dimensions through the unification of simplified visual elements. Through an intuitive process of trial and error, Mondrian achieved the unity required for his universal aesthetic by creating a delicate tension between simplified elements in simulated three dimensional space. Mondrian's "new plastic" (neoplastic) aesthetic in painting, however, is physically bound to the two dimensional surface of his canvas and allowed only the appearance of three dimensions. In my thesis, I outline the translation of Mondrian's aesthetic into a physically three dimensional context, creating a universal aesthetic in sculpture …

The Utopian Mayeux: Henri De Saint-Simon Meets The Bossu A La Mode, Elizabeth Mix Jan 1998

The Utopian Mayeux: Henri De Saint-Simon Meets The Bossu A La Mode, Elizabeth Mix

Scholarship and Professional Work – Arts

MonsieurMayeux was a fictional hunchback dwarf found in visual and literary media during and after the period of the July Monarchy (1830-1848) in France. Many artists, among them Honoré Daumier, and writers, including Victor Hugo and Alfred de Musset, popularized the hunchback. Mayeux was a unique "type " capable ofaddressing a diverse public on several simultaneous levels. The ambiguities inherent in his physical and psychological characteristics aided individuals who "used" him to sell a product or advocate a political position. With Saint-Simonism we can witness Mayeux being used to address both sides of the same argument. Although he was an …
