The issue of December 15, 1969 had a letter about saving Carr House, the student run coffee house. There also were Student Board notes, a recipe, and events for RISD students. A memo from John Lincoln, Dean of Students was also included concerning the Freshman Foundation department.

The research was an exploration into the broken color technique within the paintings of the Impressionists and Neo-Impressionists and the application of their techniques within the painting experiences of the adolescent student.

A Ritualized Approach To A Series Of Mixed Media Watercolor Paintings, Richard K. Miller

The thesis problem involved the development of a series of watercolor paintings within a ritualistic format; the standardization of approach resulted in the development of a personal iconography. This iconography was secondary to the total work however. The thesis involved the development of a series of paintings with identical preparations and preliminary developmental stages, all of which, at a certain point in development, became totally dependent regarding further work on an intuitive development and a reliance upon epiphanic insights for completion.

The purpose of this study was to make a series of jewelry, conceived as small sculpture, using the human figure in relation to environmental form. My research problem was to experiment with four high school art classes in drawing and painting the figure, to draw conclusions about how they relate to working with the figure, and to recommend methods that appeared to be most successful in broadening viewpoints, developing skills and increasing interest and involvement in art. This problem was selected because teenage students, in the vast majority of cases, have great difficulty in drawing or painting figures and, therefore, strenuously avoid it.

This thesis is composed of five oil paintings and four synthetic paintings. The works are arranged in a sequence beginning with distant over views of the city and progressing toward more immediate views. Techniques change also, from the suggestive impressionistic mode, a style I explored in my early years of art education, to a studied application of large, solid, simplified shapes of color. In my work, realism is sacrificed for a decorative arrangement of color patterns.

The issue of May 19-25, 1969 featured an article about the RISD Landscape Architecture department's study to save Block Island, RI. There also was an interview with John Torres about summer programs at RISD and at a school in Vermont, and an article about a RISD photo student who taught local pre-teens about photography. Also included was an article about the Rhode Island Art Festival and some RISD students who were volunteering their time to help.

The Designer was a student newspaper published in 1942. Three issues remain today. The first two issues are written by typewriter on loose sheaves of paper. The issue of May 12-18, 1969 included articles about Apparel Design's annual show Collection 1969, and an article about Man and his Technology, a seminar that was attended by 250 people. There was a brief article about racial troubles at Hope High School in Providence that was from a publication called EXTRA. Comics, ads, letters and art exhibits were also mentioned.
