The 7 porcelain vessels on display were all created in the Visual Studies studio during the artist’s residence at Lingnan. Each vessel was made in porcelain, with underglaze cobalt brushwork and onglaze pigments and decals.

This catalog features work from a memorial exhibition of drawings and paintings by the late Kimmerly Kiser held at Robert and Elaine Stein Galleries. Kiser was a professor of painting and drawing at Wright State University from 1969 to 1995. He continued teaching as faculty emeritus until his passing in 2006. The exhibition ran from January 25 through February 6, 2009.

"The Tupi of sixteenth- and seventeenth century coastal Brazil were renowned as fiercely warlike and, more sensationally, as cannibals. They were also famed for their ritual featherwork capes made from scarlet ibis feathers, which were closely associated with both war and anthropophagic rituals (see figure). For the semi-nomadic Tupi, featherwork was highly valued, the capes being among the only things that they carefully preserved and carried with them as they moved from site to site."

Renaissance engravings are objects of exquisite beauty and incomparable intricacy that are composed entirely of lines. Artists began using this intaglio process in Europe as early as 1430. This captivating catalogue focuses on the height of the medium, from 1480 to 1650, when engravers made dramatic and rapid visual changes to engraving technique as they responded to the demands of reproducing artworks in other media. The Brilliant Line follows these visual transformations and offers new insight into the special inventiveness and technical virtuosity of Renaissance and Baroque (Early Modern) engravers.
