Youth Development And Cycling Center: Transforming Space To Create Places For Growth, Exploration And Community., William Poole
Youth Development And Cycling Center: Transforming Space To Create Places For Growth, Exploration And Community., William Poole
Theses and Dissertations
Cycling is a sport of opposites. The mechanisms that comprise a bicycle are beautifully simple and work in perfect harmony to produce a graceful and efficient means of transportation. Additionally, cycling is a rigorous form of full-body exercise that has a relatively low-impact on the body’s bones and joints. Most importantly cycling tears down boundaries, it forces the rider to notice his surroundings and be aware of those around him. Cycling builds community and allows for interactions, both between riders and between rider and place. Juxtaposed against the simplicity and elegance of the bicycle, is the complexity and corruption of …
Piecing, Ginger Metzger
Piecing, Ginger Metzger
Theses and Dissertations
My thesis is part story telling, part exploration of research and part narrative of my experience in graduate school that culminated with my thesis work Piecing. My work explores how memory and history are connected to objects and the role they play in our ability to feel ‘at home’ at a moment when that is challenged in many ways. I extensively explore recent literature on the topic of nostalgia that is described as a reaction to the fragmentation and dislocation of our current moment, nostalgia as mal du siecle.
The White Album Restaurant, Kalee Hartman
The White Album Restaurant, Kalee Hartman
Theses and Dissertations
The White Album Restaurant occupies the old WRVA Radio Station in Church Hill. The building site provides exclusive views across downtown Richmond. The restaurant's interior design is a response to the obviously attractive exterior views of the site. Through the placement of paneled walls, views of the interior space are choreographed to create an engaging environment from any seat in the restaurant.
1700 Library: A Public Library In Scott's Addition, Anna Kreyling
1700 Library: A Public Library In Scott's Addition, Anna Kreyling
Theses and Dissertations
Thesis book documents process of creating design schematics for a proposed public library located in Scott's Addition at 1700 Summit Avenue. The final design uses a series of meandering ramps punctuated by bookshelf stacks in order to create a narrative experience. Specificity and simplicity were two main goals for the project.
Youth Hostel: Interior Porches Connecting A Home Away From Home And The City Outside, Li-Wen Lin
Youth Hostel: Interior Porches Connecting A Home Away From Home And The City Outside, Li-Wen Lin
Theses and Dissertations
In a centrally located area in the city of Richmond, the youth hostel that I propose provides young people and backpackers a suitable place to stay while enjoying their journey in the historical city of Richmond. The youth hostel offers inexpensive overnight lodging and other amenities they can use for themselves such as self-serve kitchens, laundtry rooms, etc. Something that is worth mentioning, the youth hostel's site is also close by the Richmond Visitor Center. It can offer travelers some travel information or souvenir venue. Furthermore, with the distinguished site, there is another characteristic. That is, the building was built …
Material Meaning, Anne Jordan
Material Meaning, Anne Jordan
Theses and Dissertations
The synthesis of old and new, analog and digital, and hand- and computer-based methods provides designers with an opportunity to work beyond the constraints of the computer and take advantage of the aesthetic effects that actual materials bring to visual communication. Designers who choose to actively participate in their process – bringing the aesthetic effects of working materially into the realm of the digital – will likely learn to reject an approach that relies too heavily on passive digital tools. Active participation in the design process can extend our creative vocabulary and humanize visual communication.
Visual Exploration Of Cultural Intersections, Sarah Weber
Visual Exploration Of Cultural Intersections, Sarah Weber
Theses and Dissertations
Personal exposure to, and in-depth investigations of cultural artifacts can be used to inform visual explorations that represent the universal experience of existing in a world where cultural boundaries are blurred and constantly evolving. Cross-cultural understanding and visual language are expanded throughout the research and making processes, resulting in work that has increased resonance with diverse audiences. Artifacts are not only expressions of a specific group of people, but also reflections of societal influences on one’s thinking, creating, and experiencing the world. In an increasingly global society, there is more interaction between cultures, resulting in a greater exchange of beliefs …
Through Process, Mitchell Goldstein
Through Process, Mitchell Goldstein
Theses and Dissertations
At the core of any designer’s activity is the process they engage with to create design. Process is not only a way to get from an idea to a completed work, it is also what determines our attitude towards design. This is the place where both the design and the designer are created. The gray area between nothing and something is where we go to discover design, and in turn to discover who we are and what matters to us. In this thesis I am investigating the nebulous place between ideas and things, thoughts and artifacts, and being just a …
Elevating The Everyday: Designed Objects As Companions, Cassie Hester
Elevating The Everyday: Designed Objects As Companions, Cassie Hester
Theses and Dissertations
From fleeting interactions to long affairs, our relationships with things are diverse and complex. Like people, designed objects and environments are close companions in our lives. The way we understand and engage with artifacts is parallel to the way we interpret and interact with each other. A constant source of comfort and delight, frustration and anxiety, their personalities inform our everyday dialogues and experiences. Designed artifacts assume engaging and pleasurable personalities when they transcend materials, challenge perceptions, and garner active, reflective interactions. Through the investigation of familiar materials such as concrete, crayons, paper, sequins, and thread in unfamiliar formats and …
Bethlehem Lutheran Church: Can A Building Teach?, Tyler Bland
Bethlehem Lutheran Church: Can A Building Teach?, Tyler Bland
Theses and Dissertations
The public school system in America has slowly phased music education out of most students curriculum. Cutting these programs help schools manage their fiscal budget and also keep students in the classroom longer in hopes that the extra time will produce better test scores. In recent years studies have shown that cutting music programs might not be in the best interest of students, or schools working for better test scores. One such study published in Social Science Quarterly, suggests that “students who participate in music are positively associated with academic achievement, especially during the high school years.” If this study …
A Framework For Digital Emotions, Meghan Rosatelli
A Framework For Digital Emotions, Meghan Rosatelli
Theses and Dissertations
As new media become more ubiquitous, our emotional experiences in digital space are increasing exponentially as well. While there is much talk of “affective” computing and “affective” new media art, a disconnect exists between networked emotions and the popular media that they inhabit. This research presents a theoretical framework for assessing “digital emotions”—a term that describes the feedback process between digital technologies and the body with respect to short, networked inscriptions of emotion and the (re)experience of those inscriptions within the body and through digital space. Digital emotions display five basic characteristics that can be applied to a variety of …
Place Removed: A Study Of Authenticity In Remote Locations, Emily Shea Beck
Place Removed: A Study Of Authenticity In Remote Locations, Emily Shea Beck
Theses and Dissertations
Richmond, Virginia has, through recent design proposals and projects, sought reconciliation with the countries in West Africa that were once the source for slave trade in which the city was such an active participant. These admirable works address the nations’ shared history, perhaps at the expense of understanding modern cultures. This thesis seeks to create this understanding through the development of an educational facility that would interact with Richmond’s current landscape. In pursuit of respectful relationship, I address the ways in which design can authentically teach about place. The study begins with the creation of a personal understanding of site …

This mixed-use space was designed to celebrate Richmond, Virginia’s arts and design communities. By creating a contemporary Richmond experience in a historic trolley shed, it is a space to create, relax, and inspire. This dynamic platform will showcase Richmond’s talented new creatives, from painters and sculptors to fashion designers and graphic artists. A central retail space featuring the wares of local designers is adjoined by an exclusive art gallery with exhibitions and live performances that change on a regular basis. The space also includes a sit-down restaurant and a smaller, more casual café, where patrons can dine with friends or …
Richmond River Center: Condensing A Line To A Point, Connecting A Narrative To A Moment, Angela Roy
Richmond River Center: Condensing A Line To A Point, Connecting A Narrative To A Moment, Angela Roy
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the integration of the built environment into an existing extrinsic experience. It considers how a place can become incorporated into a series of experiences in nature, while still maintaining it’s integrity as a singular space. It questions how the lines between nature and interior can be blurred, and how responses to essential existing conditions can provide a coalesced experience.
Can Interior Design Erase Architecture? The Integration Of A Pet Care Facility Into The Fan, Erin Brunner
Can Interior Design Erase Architecture? The Integration Of A Pet Care Facility Into The Fan, Erin Brunner
Theses and Dissertations
Many urban pet care and boarding facilities tend to rest on the outskirts of the community, in quasi-industrial and commercial areas. Far from the homes of the people who would use their services, the locations of these facilities are inconvenient for most. Students and the employed have trouble making time in their hectic schedules to give their pets the attention and activity they need to be healthy, and often, pets are left alone, sedentary, for a substantial portion of the day. But what if there was a pet care facility that was within walking distance from home that could provide …
Boutique Hotel: Telling A Story Of Place Through Design, Lauren Miller
Boutique Hotel: Telling A Story Of Place Through Design, Lauren Miller
Theses and Dissertations
One of the most exciting aspects of traveling is the ability to, for a short time, experience what life is like in a different part of the world. Whether traveling fifty miles away from home or to another continent, cultures, landscapes, and the many nuances of day-to-day life change. The beauty of travel comes from curiosity, exploration, and discovery. It’s that moment when your heart skips a beat and your mind fills with pure delight because you’ve just discovered something new about the world that you never knew before. Another part of the traveling experience is having a place to …
Epicuria: The Dichotomy Of Richmond's Urban And Suburban Landscape In A Market Environment, Kate Canale
Epicuria: The Dichotomy Of Richmond's Urban And Suburban Landscape In A Market Environment, Kate Canale
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the dichotomy of Richmond’s suburban and urban environments within a market environment. In our quest to make our lives more convenient, we have moved outside of cities, increased commutes and cut ourselves off from one another. Ultimately we have lowered our standards of quality in food, products and services by allowing big retailers and chain restaurants to determine a new standard of living. The goal of this works is to create a food hall and market environment that will act as a catalyst to improve the quality of life of Richmonders as well as to draw residents …
Connecting One And Many - Reinventing The Procession Of The Cinema Experience, Kelly H. Sekely
Connecting One And Many - Reinventing The Procession Of The Cinema Experience, Kelly H. Sekely
Theses and Dissertations
In the past, going to the movies was an event. The grand lit marquee made a statement, ushering you inside. The elaborately decorated lobby transported you to a place in your dreams where riches and opulence abound. The curtained screen marked the start of a true storied spectacle as you sat close to your friends and neighbors dressed in their Sunday best. There was no denying that the cinema was the place to see, be seen and to socialize. In contrast, today’s movie-going can be classified as more of a singular experience. You wait in long, solemn cattle lines to …
Parasitic Interiors, Michael Kanasink
Parasitic Interiors, Michael Kanasink
Theses and Dissertations
This project is an experiment in the adaptive reuse of an Art Deco style manufacturing facility in Richmond, VA. The building has fallen into disrepair and has been inhabited by two different owners over the years, but the structure remains very much as it did when it was erected in 1946. I will propose adapting to the defunct space, a forward thinking school based on hands-on, creative learning. This school will challenge accepted pedagogies and serve as an exapmple of future learning. I have always looked as adaptive reuse interior design as a parasitic form of designing. The new program …
Spatial Parameters In Therapeutic Spaces: Design Of A Residential Treatment Facility For Eating Disorder Patients, Sarah Beth Basinger
Spatial Parameters In Therapeutic Spaces: Design Of A Residential Treatment Facility For Eating Disorder Patients, Sarah Beth Basinger
Theses and Dissertations
Can the built environment positively influence the treatment of an eating disorder? Does the built environment play a role in the quality of care, the rehabilitation process and the lasting affects of treatment in eating disorders and if so, what role does it play? What are the important parameters to consider in designing such a space? Currently there are few facilities designed specifically for the treatment of this disorder. Of those facilities, there is a lack of research regarding the effects of the built environment. Therefore, the process of answering these questions must begin by assessing parameters in architectural precedents …
Visible Trace A Series Of Selected Projects Reflecting My Graduate School Experience, My Interest In Mark Making, Typographic Collage, And Serendipity., Meaghan Dee

Aural Landscapes, Brandi Price
Aural Landscapes, Brandi Price
Theses and Dissertations
Music and design draw upon innate parallels concerned with the creation and existence of space. By acknowledging the roles of both the visual and the aural in my design process as input and output, I attempt to achieve a deeper understanding of my intuition as a visual communicator. I believe that the visual and aural are linked—existing harmoniously together. The collected works present ever-evolving ideas on visualizing the experience of sound.
Navigating The Space Of My Body, Ferwa Ibrahim
Navigating The Space Of My Body, Ferwa Ibrahim
Theses and Dissertations
This paper explores my process of orienting myself within spaces and inhabiting them. It focuses on how I use my own body as an instrument for developing a relationship between the two. A ritual is a social conditioning of the body and Authentic Movement is discovering body’s own route. This paper reviews my process of situating myself within a space by using both of them as the language of my body. It also discusses the development of some of my recent work through understanding the language of my own body.
Space: A Discovery Of Visual Language, Kelley White
Space: A Discovery Of Visual Language, Kelley White
Theses and Dissertations
Space is a visual communicator. The act of perceiving space is a neurological soiree that projects and negotiates meaning in our constructed world. The poetry that we observe within space is tied directly to our emotions and to previous experience. Within ourselves, we each have particular feelings, unconscious or not, relating to height, length, and depth, as well as light and shadow. For example, a long, narrow hallway may elicit anxiety, while an open, sunlit nave in a cathedral may bring about feelings of serenity and joy. Our observations and interactions within the perceptual confines of space reveal clues to …
Renditions, Nathan Halverson
Renditions, Nathan Halverson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis includes ideas and explorations behind my MFA thesis work and the work that that preceded it in late 2010 and early 2011. In it, I use a creative text by Gertrude Stein, in which she reveals ways that writing reveals and creates language and culture, to illustrate similar ideas regarding field recording and appropriation in my art practice. I use this thesis writing to investigate practices and relationships between media and how these practices can encourage an active, participatory, listening and looking. It also contains discussion of the use of popular music in torture, which inspired Rendition(s), and …

The Design Integration Of An Animal Shelter Into Martin Luther King Middle School, Anna Givens
The Design Integration Of An Animal Shelter Into Martin Luther King Middle School, Anna Givens
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the design integration of an animal shelter into an existing school in an at-risk neighborhood. The connection between at-risk students and homeless animals is valuable to the design. A large central courtyard located within Martin Luther King Middle School serves as a connection between both students and animals. Because the animal shelter is located in a central location within the school, students and animals have a greater ability to form a connection necessary for the program to work. This thesis is about the interaction between both animals and students through the process of design.
Children's Art Museum, Shalen Bradford
Children's Art Museum, Shalen Bradford
Theses and Dissertations
This Thesis explores the question; Is a children’s museum a playground or a museum? Through research and visits to children’s museums I feel that many are playgrounds. They are also visually stimulating to children, but not to the guardians who bring them there. In most cases the exhibits are permanent and there is little change to the atmosphere of the space on a regular basis. An old warehouse located on North Boulevard was chosen to house this project idea of a children’s art museum. The scenario is that The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Children’s Museum of Richmond …
Graphic Design As Projection, Bret Hansen
Graphic Design As Projection, Bret Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
I imagined a world where designing is projecting and where the entire design field is called projection. My research into what it means to be a projector culminates in a participatory creative project that embodies concepts of projection taken from a range of disparate subjects.
Understanding Design, Joshua Reese
Understanding Design, Joshua Reese
Theses and Dissertations
Somewhere along the way, I found that graphic design in professional practice was becoming synonymous with form and style, and losing its connection with concept and audience. I’m trying to find a way back.
