In 2020 flamboyant fashion is associated with queer performativity. Psychologist Alan Downs and queer theorist madison moore understand this to be a response to a culture that is hostile to sexual behaviour and gender expression that falls outside a rigid binary. I study the history of flamboyant aesthetics and camp sensibilities from an intersectional perspective, and locate designers and artists who have produced clothes in ways that materialize the political implications of fashion. As a studio-based artist, I employ traditional sewing techniques, digital technologies, and performance to create clothes and new media works that demonstrate a circular understanding of time, …
Moving Parts, Andrew Lowrie
Moving Parts, Andrew Lowrie
Theses and Dissertations
Material bodies, human and non-human, exist in a constant state of doing and undoing. As bodies change over time, so too do the objects they wear. In this way, a jewelry object is never finished and is constantly being made. In contemporary art practice, this is described as relational ontology by Amelia Jones, who reaches this terminology through the eco-political writings of Jane Bennett and Karen Barad. Through this framework we are able to understand the way artists like Gabriel Orozco and Helen Carnac resist the notion of a finished object or artwork. By engaging with the ways that process …
...And Yet The Devil Exists, John Hee Taek Chae
...And Yet The Devil Exists, John Hee Taek Chae
Theses and Dissertations
...And Yet the Devil Exists is a project that explores the ways in which ideology determines reality. It is an installation that plots and connects the historical and personal narratives that have defined my sense of identity–narratives in which perceptions of reality shatter, mutate, or hybridize when confronted with power, opportunity, or coercion. The installation component of the project consists of three parts. The first is an infrastructure made of wooden beams upon which paintings and images are installed; I call this the lantern. In the center of this is a round table on top of which is a nonsensical …
See As One, Min Haeng Kang
See As One, Min Haeng Kang
Theses and Dissertations
Everything that exists in the world is made from “nature.” Humans who initially coexisted with nature began to distinguish themselves from what is human and what is not. Unlike past systems that used to reuse all materials, Society so far has focused on maximizing economic profits along with advancing technology. As a result, the nature of the earth is being irrevocably destroyed, and I think the basis for this lies in the distinctions made between the human and the non-human.
I am always seeking to be in a state where I do not have an atman, like the Buddhist concept …

Hidden Gem: Realizing The Value Of Community In Healthcare Environments, Nicole Lee
Hidden Gem: Realizing The Value Of Community In Healthcare Environments, Nicole Lee
Theses and Dissertations
Holistic approaches in healthcare address a problem from its root causes. The American healthcare model – both its treatment and distribution methods – is among the many issues that divides the nation. We have found ourselves with millions of uninsured people among a growing population where chronic illness is on the rise among adults and children, especially within low-income demographics (Goodman & Conway, 2016). Though this is a widespread epidemic, only recently has there been any effort to question and reform traditional healthcare.
The way that wellness is assessed in America has been detrimental to patient outcomes …
Carousel: Performance And Ritual Of A Child's Play, Erik Maniscalco
Carousel: Performance And Ritual Of A Child's Play, Erik Maniscalco
Theses and Dissertations
Carousel is a series of oil paintings inspired by my seven year old
daughter, as well as my work towards becoming a childhood educator. My
aim with this project is to explore the performative and ritualistic nature of
children’s play: focusing on the creative ways children stretch and reshape
their reality through imagined play narratives. Upon the carousel’s stage,
children select a character and take part in a performed ritual. I’ve long felt
connected to the visual vocabulary found within baroque and renaissance
styles, and I am fascinated by the mixture of amusement, tradition,
religion, and distortion imbued within the …

Monumentalizing Rituals Of The Palestinian Diaspora, Reema Abu Hassan
Monumentalizing Rituals Of The Palestinian Diaspora, Reema Abu Hassan
Theses and Dissertations
Displaced Palestinians have historically sought to preserve their Palestinian memories and identities in order to remain connected to their lost homeland. Despite the importance of memory for them, and their history of suffering and exile, there have not been any significant monuments designed to preserve their collective memory.
This thesis considers the adaptation of a traditional monument by redesigning it to the specificity of the Palestinian diaspora. In doing so it proposes the monumentalizing of four Palestinian rituals to add significance, meaning and permanence to them. The four rituals are making maamoul, applying orange and mashmoom perfume oil to …
Cultural Production In Qatar: Design, Dialog And The New Authentic, Asma Derouiche
Cultural Production In Qatar: Design, Dialog And The New Authentic, Asma Derouiche
Theses and Dissertations
Qatar, as a rapidly modernizing Arab country with a highly heterogeneous emergent community, is working to achieve a balance between accelerated development and cultural identity. Qatar’s cross-cultural environment and diverse attributes offer unprecedented opportunity to produce forward-looking, “100% Qatari Products,” that express a New Authentic.
This thesis explores social dynamics governing cultural production in Qatar, and it challenges unproductive manifestations of social hierarchy—particularly related to norms surrounding the default working relationship between designers and artisans. The research highlights and celebrates the inherent diversity of the Qatari artifact, creating a platform and methods wherein designers and artisans collaborate equally and meaningfully. …
Sensory Substitution, Key To Inclusive Learning, Fathima Z. Zahir
Sensory Substitution, Key To Inclusive Learning, Fathima Z. Zahir
Theses and Dissertations
Visually impaired students, in primary education, encounter unique challenges while learning creative skills, exploring artistic expression and developing problem-solving skills, because so much instructional content is delivered visually. Sensory substitution—an approach that replaces visual information with feedback from other intact senses like touch, sound, taste or smell—provides an opportunity to address those challenges.
Through the use of sensory substitution, this thesis proposes concrete ways to capitalize on the enhanced abilities of visually impaired primary school students. The research outcome of this thesis is a system of templates that puts these enhanced abilities to work for visually impaired students, to support …
Spit In My Mouth: Queer Intimacies, Material Intra-Actions, And Sensuous Becoming, Gm Keaton
Spit In My Mouth: Queer Intimacies, Material Intra-Actions, And Sensuous Becoming, Gm Keaton
Theses and Dissertations
This document describes my multidisciplinary art practice as it intersects with New Materialism, Queer and Affect theory, Ecology, and my embodied and experiential knowledge as a queer subject. The writing is divided into two categories. One is more theoretical, thinking through these different discourses. The other realizes them through relationships and intra-actions between my material kin and me. With these two modes of writing,I propose that embodied and felt knowing is as valid and illuminating as more traditional forms of knowledge. These sections are interdependent and resist linear logic, offering relational meanings to each reader as they find their way …
A Girl Is A Girl Is A Girl, Paige Lizbeth Morris
A Girl Is A Girl Is A Girl, Paige Lizbeth Morris
Theses and Dissertations
It is well known that Western society uses men’s visual pleasure as a means to determine womxn’s value; her success is dependent on her compliance with culturally determined beauty standards. This process turns womxn into commodities and reinforces notions of gender complementarity, perpetuating a lifetime of servitude to patriarchal ideologies. It reminds the non-male that she is incomplete, insufficient, insignificant, and so easily dismissable. It forces her to be dependent, to shut up, to sit down, and to enjoy it.
In an effort to reject these presumed histories and narrow connotations of womxn, I have analyzed my gender performance in …
Prey Begins With Play, Seren C. Moran
Prey Begins With Play, Seren C. Moran
Theses and Dissertations
My work examines the lasting psychological and emotional torment of trauma focusing on sexual violence against women. My thesis consists of five short animated films recounting non-fiction experiences of sexual assault. To contextualize my work within cultural and historical representations of sexual violence, this text reflects my research on the mishandling of rape in Western art history as well as contemporary politics and cinema. In both my work and research, I address the complicated, and often contradictory, internal reality of experiencing and remembering trauma and how this relates to artistic strategies such as collage and maximalism. My personal struggles recovering …
Arabic Beyond Arabic, Abir Zakzok
Arabic Beyond Arabic, Abir Zakzok
Theses and Dissertations
Arabic is the best and the most complicated language of all time!” Even though this statement seems like an exaggeration, it is what I grew up hearing; from my Arab parents as a child, my Arab teachers as a student, and my Arab customers as a salesperson. The Arabic language has a significant role in Arabs’ identity, yet most Arabs only scratch the surface and do not fully grasp the embedded meaning of the language. I have long been fascinated by the relationship between language and community as well as how it translates to design - specifically, the relationship between …
Failing In My Own Class, Bryan Castro
Failing In My Own Class, Bryan Castro
Theses and Dissertations
This research statement summarizes how my artwork has shifted from my performance-lecture Say It After Me to the painting-installation Becoming Dysfluent. To understand that shift in my practice, an account of my performance-lecture Say It After Me is explained in order to understand how it’s similar and different to Joseph Beuys’s performances with blackboards. Next, the relationship between the American educational system and my identity is explained in order to understand how my experiences as an instructor in higher education informed the creation of my performance persona Professor Castro. After discussing my identity as a Puerto Rican-American, my decision …

Fool's Rest, Aidan Quinlan
Fool's Rest, Aidan Quinlan
Theses and Dissertations
The text calls itself a guide, but it is no guide. From the genre of guide, it borrows the outlines and silhouettes and lines between things and spaces and ideas. It lingers on the shadows of its subject(s); it is attentive to the periphery of its world; but it cannot take you there. There is no there. It lacks the authority of the guide; it lacks the lucidity, the efficiency, the false totality of the guide; it lacks the confidence.
The guide embodies its own anxieties. This makes sense, as its reason to exist was born on the one-way highway …
Reclaiming Beercraft- A Sensory Experience, Zishan Zeng
Reclaiming Beercraft- A Sensory Experience, Zishan Zeng
Theses and Dissertations
The senses are mainly a source of arousal, enjoyment and pain and are of vital importance for the human body. They are also important because sensory perception is typical of many cultural artifacts and is given unique intensities and extensions, shapes and meanings through them (Heywood, 2017). As Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa stated, “architecture is the art of reconciliation between ourselves and the world, and this mediation takes place through the senses” (Pallasmaa, 2012). To make architecture truly meaningful, it should be able to awaken all the senses.
The way we feel, smell, and even taste is hard to capture. …

Design Hub: Activating Community By Design, Ed Williams
Design Hub: Activating Community By Design, Ed Williams
Theses and Dissertations
MOTIVATION
At the turn of the century, Robert Putnam (2000, 27) wrote “...a powerful tide bore Americans into ever deeper engagement in the life of their communities, but a few decades ago that tide reversed and we were overtaken by a treacherous rip current.” Putnam is describing a loss of “social capital” throughout American society. Research suggests that many of our contemporary issues are the result of a decline in “social capital,” or “community.”
This pervasive lack of community is thought to be detrimental to “educational performance, safe neighborhoods, equitable tax collection, democratic responsiveness, everyday honesty, and even our health …

Oblivion, Angela V. Scardigno
Oblivion, Angela V. Scardigno
Theses and Dissertations
I believe I am drawn to work with wood because of genetic reasons. My grandfather was a carpenter. I remember him as a hardworking and busy man. As something inseparable and equally inspiring, I remember his studio which was a small house that was full of creativity and great memories. My grandparents’ house is one of my first memories where I learned to create art and collage. I have started to notice, as I get older, that I am constantly trying to bring back an atmosphere that resembles that warm and safe place of childhood. I have also noticed that …

Non-Space: The Perception Of Reality, Carlos Limas
Theses and Dissertations
This is a formal study of real-world images that try to convey a clear approach to the way we look and relate to unexpected places that at first glance don’t exist in a metaphorical way or just don’t strike us as interesting or attractive. There’s no particular story to tell only the need to expose a different kind of beauty through my own personal subjective view and sensitivity expanding the criteria of my own esthetic values and context of a captured image in a particular scenario.
The perception of Non-Space relates directly to a well establish photography technique called Deadpan, …

Shattering Taciturnity: The Use Of Visual Arts As A Method Of Communication And Expression, Jesmil M. Maldonado Rodriguez
Theses and Dissertations
Silence an action that conceals a person’s memories, thoughts, emotions, fears, and insecurities, making them crave a method of expression. In this case, the Visuals Arts serves as an approach to investigate, create, understand, accept, and confront the darkness within the artist's psychological and emotional state. Inspiration taken from vibrant colors and insects found within Puerto Rico's natural sources, how these interact, relate, and consume the human within. By creating a series of artworks, the artist starts to comprehend how silence has taken over her life. Taciturnity has become the flame that ignited the artistic flow that leads to the …
So . . . We're Going For A Walk: A Placed-Based Outdoor Art Experiential Learning Experience, Priscilla Anne Stewart
So . . . We're Going For A Walk: A Placed-Based Outdoor Art Experiential Learning Experience, Priscilla Anne Stewart
Theses and Dissertations
Schools in the United States often emphasize making children competitive in a global economy while neglecting the importance of developing citizens who are ecologically responsible. Problems of climate change, loss of biodiversity, mass extinctions and degradation of the natural environment, are often ignored. Some researchers have suggested that children lack unstructured play time in nature, have an increased amount of screen time, lack mindfulness, and are insulated from the natural world. Many children rarely have significant experience with nature's wildness. It is common for people to experience a sense of placelessness in the hyper-mobility of present times where "globalizing" agendas …
Multiple Bodies As One, Valerie Skakun
Multiple Bodies As One, Valerie Skakun
Theses and Dissertations
Influenced by traumatic bodily injuries, physical therapy, muscle growth, breathing patterns, mental health, ways of supporting a disabled body, navigating the health care system, and exhaustion, the work described in this paper is a double meaning of the word "organ" and investigates the body as machine. The vital parts of a pump organ, the bellows and pipes, are extracted and re-configured into structures built for the performer's entire body to physically engage with in order to produce wind-driven sounds. Two of the sound sculptures require that two performers engage in play together, allowing them to audibly communicate through moving their …
